About La Bodega - Leawood
"Tapas" - In the beginning. Tapas is a daily event in the life of the Spanish culture. Mainly a Northern Spain, Basque regional tradition, it has grown to signify a way of eating and socializing. It is said that tapas originated centuries ago. In Spanish, the word tapa or the verb tapar means "to cover." Tapas represents the Spanish custom of placing a piece of bread over the glass of wine. It is a custom that dates back past the 1500's. Traditionally, the exact food served is less important than the social occasion. Tapas is a way of life. It signifies leisure, camaraderie and good humor. In Spain, Tapas are almost always accompanied by wine. They are not so much about talking as they are about eating and drinking. The wine is the medium that holds the conversation with friends and the food together. You make time to enjoy the moment in an unhurried way. The threefold purpose of snacking on tapas is to dull any hunger pangs that have built up since the previous intake of comestibles.

La Bodega - Leawood Ratings and Reviews
We went for Restaurant Week and everything was good, but would have been happier ordering off the regular menu. FYI - paella takes awhile to cook so it was delivered well after my husband had finished his 3 tapas. They brought his tapas out immediately and wish they would have timed it closer to my paella. He got 3 chicken skewers, 6 shrimp, and a BUNCH of olives - probably better for a larger group. With salad, entree and dessert, more food than we needed, so next time we will just get tapas and maybe a dessert. Their sangria is best in town!
My husband and I were first-time patrons of La Bodega. I have driven by a million times, but wanted to partake for restaurant week for something different. We were so impressed! Super fun menu, excellent service, and delish sangria! The food was top notch and we had a fun time picking out tapas to try. Four thumbs up from us and highly recommended!!
We shared a dish of seafood paella, which was delicious . There was ample squid, shrimp, and mussels. Also, had the chorizo and bean soup which was good. The waiter was friendly and attentive; and, the restaurant manager came by our table to check on our satisfaction.
The food was fantastic. Our server Brian was not able to keep up with the service level I would have expected to receive. My water was empty on multiple occasions. We sat at our table with empty plates as we waited for additional tapas dishes. Or server told us they came out fast so to order when we saw fit, this was not a good recommendation. I ordered another drink from someone who delivered my food. My waiter had no idea I was waiting on my $14 drink so it was never brought until I asked for it. As you guessed it was watered down.
The business needs to increase the level of service to meet expectations.
Went out with family for my birthday dinner. Not impressed. My mother's wine not as ordered, sent it back. My husband's bacon wrapped dates were burnt, can't believe they even served them, they were replaced with apologies from the manager, not our server. Paella was dry, shrimp chewy. We ordered dessert and received new spoons that we're Dirty!!!! Asked for replacements, all without ever receiving an apology from our server, unbelievable in my opinion. The 3 dessert tarts filling was grainy & runny. Flan & Salmon entree we're the only positives for the whole meal. Won't be returning.
Ok-came here for an event. Their first ever “Cuban night.”It was supposed to be a 4 course tasting menu. It.was.horrendous.
Reservation was at 7:30, got there at 7:05 to have a drink or 2 before dinner. Took us 20 min to finally flag down a bartender-even though there were 3 of them.
We didn’t get sat until 8:10-40 min AFTER our reservation. Was told bread would be brought over and dinner would start shortly. It took 22 min for bread to be delivered-and the first course wasnt brought out for another 15 min after that. So dinner didn’t start until about 9 pm...90 min after our reservation. I didn’t want to walk out because they had my credit card info already and I was afraid I would be charged.
I was told there were “free” rum tastings, only to walk over and be told they cost $10+ a pour.
The salad was drenched in dressing. The crab soup was the best part of the meal. The next 2 courses were BLAND and served COLD. The 3 appetiser plate, cold. The head on shrimp was decent, the “Russian caviar sauce” tasted like sour cream, plantain and beef was good-again cold-would’ve been better warm, and the chicken wing was different and tangy. The next course had 2 pork dishes and some fried chicken. The chicken breading was soggy and flavourless. And again everything was cold. The sides were black beans and rice, brought out a good 10 min before everything else. So again-cold cold cold and zero flavour, beans were unseasoned and the rice had maybe a liiiittle cilantro. The guava flan was delicious. That and the soup were the best part. We walked out of there almost at 10:30....no dinner should take 3 hours. Also-the sangria at the bar cost $3.50, at the table it was $7...even though it was the same drink. And no, it wasn’t happy hour. So disappointed with the service and quality of food for $35/plate. My date and I spent almost $150 after food and drinks and it was terrible.the wait was absolutely crazy and I regret not walking out for now much we spent
I very much enjoy both locations of La Bodega but they definitely were not prepared for the crowd they had on Sunday night for their Cuban night event. My party was not seated until 40+ minutes later than my reservation and, though the place was emptying by then, the first course took a while in coming. Luckily we were not in a hurry and we’ve had good experiences before so I wasn’t too upset. However, perhaps better planning of reservation capacity during these special events is needed since obviously tables won’t turn as quickly when patrons are enjoying the good food, music and energy of the evening.
Another good meal at La Bodega, a great place to meet friends for talking and noshing. We tried seven different dishes among the eight of us. The meatballs on crostini were especially delicious and the dates with pancetta were their usual scrumptious selves. The calamari, a mixture of whole tiny octopi and rings cut from larger octopus arms, was done just right - the rings just slightly chewy and the tiny octopi left with a slight crunch. Every dish we ordered was devoured - nothing was left for take-home.
If you eat here be sure to leave some room for the churros. These perfectly fried ridged tubes of dough, filled with just-sweet-enough raspberry purée, and served with whipped cream and more raspberry purée, are just the right finish for a spicy meal.
Excellent selection and outstanding service from Rachel, Sophia and the rest of the crew. We had a variety of hot tapas and enjoyed every one of them. The dates stuffed with chorizo were particularly tasty. The beef meatballs in white sauce deserved the encore ordering we gave them. Very fine customer service by Rachel to get the exact Cab my dinner companions desired. Have ate at La Bodega several times before, but without a reservation, so this is first time I can give them a shout using Open Table!
Went for brunch. My party was 50/50 on the music. We all shared a bite of our meals and agreed the food was great! Only ding is maybe too much paprika but it is a Mexican style restaurant. Service was good, glasses were refilled without needing to ask. I would recommend the steak and egg hash or the mushroom/asparagus omelet. Mimosas could have been stronger... my ticket was 2 meals and two $9 unlimited mimosas for $45
The food was amazingly good. The Calamari and Chorizo (hot tapas) was my favorite. The refried potatoes were a close second. If I were to only base the review on the food it would be a 5 star rating. However, the waitress we had was horrible. It took 15 minutes to get my drink and 25 minutes for my husband. It then took a long time for the waitress to take our food order which was well after the customers beside us (who came in 15 minutes after us) got their drink orders as well as food orders taken. While the atmosphere itself was nice it was in my opinion too loud.
Had a nice time, but with a reservation we had to sit at a higher table. This was difficult for me as I am recovering from a back injury, so made for a less than enjoyable time. I have been coming to La Bodega for years, but formerly to your SW Boulevard location. Next time I will specify a regular table. I don't think people get the relax they need from the higher tables.
Delicious, creative Spanish tapas. Great service. Easy parking. The only complaint I have is that the bread (for the table as well as incorporated into the dishes) is not very good. It tasted a bit stale. I am used to tapas restaurants having fantastic grilled bread.
I loved everything about the restaurant! From the moment my friends and I walked in until we had dessert, it was amazing! The food was fresh and the tapas are the best! I tried dishes that I normally would not have tried! Excellent experience and I'm recommending the restaurant to all my friends!
Seafood Paella was ordered as last of 10 items, the first 9 all had good flavor, prepared well and the kids ate them up as well. the Paella, eaxh member of the family took and portion, the kids did not finish there 1st spoon full, my wife and I had a few fork fulls to taste and then left it. it was bland and flavorless, inadequate seafood, rice was not cooked properly. dissapointing.
First time @ LaBodega on a Friday night. Great service, delicious Spanish wines, fun place. All 4 of us got different food & it was all delicious. I got seafood paella-fabulous & enough to bring home for lunch the next day. Everyone else had tapas & all were yummy. We’ll go back for sure.
