La Bocca Wine Bar & Urban Kitchen Ratings and Reviews
I had been to La Bocca a few weeks - I was disappointed but since it is in my neighborhood I decided to give it another try. Mistake! Although I had made a reservation I had the choice of a table scrunched in the corner or the bar. The bar it was. I mentioned to the bartender that I had been disappointed on my first visit - mostly due to blandness of sauces. Since I was ordering the calamari (second time) he suggested that I get some tomato sauce on the side. That did help the overall flavor - what didn't help was that I was charged $2 for the space. Then I was charged $3 for bread - when I noted that the bartender said -> I thought something was wrong with the bill. I should have said -> why didn't you fix it but I decided to just let it go since he took it off the bill. If I say the wine pours were 5 oz I am being generous. Just not worth it - too bad because it is convenient.
We don't go to High Street often. It is just located inconveniently for us. However, I decided to try La Bocca Wine Bar & Urban Kitchen based on reviews online. We were not disappointed. It is charmingly decorated with bright orange and large doors opening to their patio. It is intimate as not too large or impersonal. The service was outstanding and the food presentation and quality great. We enjoyed a tasty French onion soup that could have had more cheese but still very good. I had their chicken salad that has no mayo - they use vinegar and it is very good. Their bread is a pizza bread. A hit with us! We were very glad we tried this restaurant and will definitely return.
My husband, daughter, and I went for an early dinner to La Bocca. It was still happy hour, so we both took advantage of the wine deal and ordered a glass each (white for me, red for him) along with a salad appetizer. The salad came out, but our drinks were no where to be found. When we asked our server, she did quickly run over to the bar, find them, and apologize for the delay. They don't have a children's menu, but you can "DIY" a pizza and so we ordered one with just cheese on it for her- and she scarfed it. I had the garlic pizza, at the server's suggestion, and it was equally delicious. The only drawback really is that they seated us right next to the doors leading outside- which meant we got blasted with cold air every time someone went in and out of the doors. Other than that, we had a lovely time and would definitely go back.
There are 4 birthdays in our family for October. We celebrate by all going to dinner together and pick a new spot each year. This year was La Bocca and what a great time was had by all. The food was very good, portions were appropriate but not overwhelming and tasted great. The service was excellent! Todd was our server and was timely without being annoying to constantly "check in". It was nice to not have the server asking how things are when you just had your first mouthful and then be allowed to enjoy your meal without being rushed through it. Wait time from appetizers to main course was enough to allow our group to relax and enjoy the atmosphere, talk and enjoy a glass of wine. Dinner was very tasty and the staff was accommodating when it came to special dietary needs. Loved the Grilled Chicken stuffed with pesto! Deserts are very good, with the brownie and macadamia nut cookies being very rich, sweet and delicious. While never visiting High Street in the past, this was a great experience and I'm sure my wife and I will be back.
The Mixto Sangria was delicious, and the bruschetta board was to die for!!! I ordered the Margarita pizza by recommendation of our server, it was terribly bland and such a disappointment. Next time I'm just getting the bruschetta board and a salad for dinner.
We were meeting good friends for dinner and made a reservation well in advance. The restaurant even called to confirm our reservation. When we arrived, we were told they were overbooked and we had to be temporarily seated outside. It was 105 degrees. Every time we asked when we would be seated inside, we were told it would be a few minutes. We were never moved inside. We tried to make the best of it, but we were just miserable. Trying to eat while dripping with sweat. It was obvious after an hour we were simply lied to. Not sure who got the table we reserved inside, but they were obviously way more important than us. I am spreading the word that this place doesn't care if you are miserable if someone more influential wants a table. Never going back.
We sat on the patio and the staff was taking too long to bring out drinks as our group was seated. One or our guests went inside to order and they said he would have to order a drink from the waitress - even though she was apparently too busy to get to our table. The bartenders all had attitudes and walked by us three times when we sat up to the bar to order. All of them acted as if we weren't sitting there. So weird. Two bartenders and three of us at the bar. Not exactly too busy to serve us.
No complaints. We were attracted to this restaurant because of it's overall location with a corner patio and ambiance. Food & drinks are very good - service outstanding. Went for dinner then strolled down High Street to view the bar scene & then yogurt. Modern Margarita is across the street - another great find and owned by the same owner. We will definitely be back. Try the happy hour too!!
We've been there many times and this was the first time we've had any issue. We had reservations and arrived early. A table wasn't available and due to rain there was much less seating than normal due to no outside seating. We were seated in a lounge area and while we did get service for drinks and food, had we not kept asking for a table, we likely would not have gotten one. The lounge area would be great if we were just having drinks but we intended to have dinner. Finally, we were seated at a table and were able to enjoy our dinner. The food is always excellent and as I stated, this was the first time we've had any problem at La Bocca.
Living just 6 miles from this restaurant, I had never been. I realize it's relatively new, but what a find!! GREAT food and service. My friend that was visiting on business had been here just days before with co workers for lunch. He suggested it again. We were in a bit of a hurry as he had to get to the airport so we met early ( 11:30am on a Friday ). It started to fill up yet our service remained on spot and food was excellent. I had Beet/Goat cheese salad as recommendation of our server. It was jut the right size and extremely tasty. I can't wait to go back.
La Bocca at City North is a lively bar & trattoria with a good wine selection and pretty good Italian kitchen. A good place to meet friends for a casual dinner & drinks; perhaps before taking in a concert at the Musical Instrument Museum. The pasta bolognese is quite good!
