Kyoto Japanese Restaurant was opened by Sam & Yoshiko Tada in 1984. Sam (a native of Kyoto Japan) brought his culinary skills & Yoshiko managed the accounting and service. Both Sam & Yoshiko still participate in the day to day operations of Kyoto.

The head suchi chef (Peggy) makes incredible sushi and rolls. The service was friendly and impeccable. The portions were generous and delicious. Prices very reasonable. Will definitely go back.

We made a reservation for a birthday dinner…I had to tell our server it was a celebration. Service was wonderful! I had the veggie tempura, composed mostly of potatoes and shredded carrots with two skewers of mushrooms and Japanese pumpkin…very disappointing.

It's just OK. Nothing exciting. The sushi quality was not that impressive. Rice falling off the tiny tuna rolls. Ordered more and it took so long - almost 30 minutes for just an additional roll. It was busy, but still not acceptable. Our server staff was very apologetic at least. Just satisfied but is not worth a trip to come back.

This is my favorite Japanese restaurant! The food never disappoints! Service is excellent. When my sister comes to visit me from Hawaii she always wants to eat at this restaurant! She says the food here is better than Japanese restaurants in Hawaii-I have to agree!

As a restaurant owner myself, I can safely say this place was terrible. We have been to Kyoto Restaurant several times when in SLC. What happened?😟. Nigiri, Uni fresh, but everything else (squid tempura, Udon, etc.) terrible. They took the squid Tempura off the bill. We did not ask them to, but they could see we didn’t eat the dish. Surely someone else there knows how to make tempura batter annd cook it properly. Oh, I had the steak. The meat was tender and cooked nicely as I asked, but the teriyaki sauce was layered thick all over the steak. I tried to scrape it off, but still too much sauce stayed glued to the steak. Behind the sushi counter, where were the Japanese? All or all but one were non-Japanese. The restaurant did not seem clean and we were at a table which was opposite people seating at the Sushi Counter, higher up than we were. All we could see were people and their flip flops flopping, exposing feet bottoms which were unclean. We were very, very disappointed because we were looking forward to returning to a good Japanese meal. What on earth happened to this place? Sayonara😢

Lovely atmosphere with private dining booths near the entrance. Our table near the back by the bar was more like typical restaurant seating so it didn't feel as cozy. While the wait staff did nothing wrong per se, it wasn't outstanding either. Our only service was to take our order, deliver food, check on us once and provide the check. Were there any specials? We'll never know. The rolls we ordered were well prepared and prompt. We'd go back if friends or family wanted to go but I doubt we would initiate a return on our own.

Not the same family owned tiny gem of exquisite simplicity and elegant food. Served a PILE of tempura vegetables so large it was unmanageable and wasteful. Dipping sauce was tasteless. The best item on the table was the salad and their dressing. Enlarged restaurant was quite noisy. We had wonderful service at the table.

The food is always fantastic at Kyoto! Last night my husband and I received our meal at least 10 minutes before my mother-in-law received hers. She said her meal was delicious, but it's so unfortunate her meal arrived so late after we had received ours. We were taking nibbles off of our meals but they were getting cold by the time hers arrived...not fun! Other than that, it was a great meal, as usual!

Great food and service was pretty good for a busy evening. However, the restaurant was loud and it did kinda feel like they were squeezing as many ppl into the place as they could. If you’re not worried about noise and you don’t need a bunch of room, this is a great choice. For a romantic date I’d probably pick somewhere else.

we were seated in the tatami rooms in the back which had no air conditioning vents and was super hot. They should have put in some portable fans to help create some sort of circulation. The daikon salad was drowning in dressing and was inedible. Way too salty and drenched. They did take it off the bill after we indicated our concerns. We've been coming for 30 plus years and we would still recommend Kyoto and hope that they will remedy the two situations in the future.

I normally do not leave reviews, but this place was so good it needs to be shared! Everything that hit the table was delicious. Portion sizes were very large and the ambience made it feel as though I was in a Japanese restaurant! My wife and I are coming back here soon!!

Made reservations but was told there is no table inside, so we have to sit outside , when can clearly see inside has a few empty tables. The server comes only 2 times , taking order , and taking our money. Never come out again to serve. When taking order he stand so far away from our table , seems like we have virus to spread to him. Food is not good either just ok. Very bad experience, will never come , nor suggest to others

This was my second time eating at Kyoto and was my last. Never going back. Quality of fish was sub-par for sashimi. Specialty rolls were not special.

We had a wonderful reunion and fabulous food! All of us enjoyed the evening together! We had sushi, tofu appetizers, shrimp and veggie tempura, udon noodles, sukiyaki, and teriyaki steak.

My family and I enjoy the food at the Kyoto. It is always fresh and delicious with a wonderful presentation. The choices are plentiful and always served properly. I have lived in Japan and eaten at many various shokudos. You are treated as family at the Kyoto.

The food was excellent, fresh, and flavorful. Inside are tables or traditional booth seating behind rice paper panels. Inside the restaurant was noisy but the patio was lovely with soft music and running water, albeit some traffic noise from the street. The service was quick, warm, friendly, and detail oriented. We had a great time, and enjoyed the high quality for a low price.
