Went for our anniversary, although sunset couldn't be seen because it was so cloudy, the view was still spectacular. Food was amazing, would highly recommend.
Both my daughter and myself got extremely ill after eating the prawns, ahi and soup of the day
We had a nice time. It was a bit pricey for Kama'aina. The Prime rib and Fish special was well worth it. The short ribs WERE NOT. The flavor was excellent but you got 3 little medallions of meat. compared to your other meals, it was a disappointment. In my opinion the ribs were a good value But the sauce had a little too much 5 spice. Other then that we had a good time.
The view was awesome. The service was friendly and conversational. The food - salad was great but for the main course they were out of our first selection so we opted for a filet minion - medium. It came well done and dry - both of us had the same thing - the other was ordered medium rare and also came well done. The potato’s were also dry and cold. We’ve enjoyed lunch many time here and will return for lunch in the future, but not dinner.
Previous visits were lovely, but the most recent was dreadful. The server was charming and sweet but got the drink order wrong, forgot to bus the starter plates before bringing the entrees so we had to bus ourselves. She never once refilled our waters and never asked if we wanted another round of drinks.
But the service was excellent compared to the food. It was horrendous. I ordered a fillet mignon. They never asked how I want to be prepared, but they presented me the smallest and most over cooked piece of meat I’ve ever seen in my life. I sent it back and asked for one to be cooked medium rare. What the brought next was literally raw. The mushroom risotto was so over cooked it had the consistency of applesauce. And the shrimp in my wife’s scampi was not cleaned. She had to de-vein them herself.
While there both tables adjacent to us had the same experience. Every meal was returned. And the manager actually argued with another couple explaining that their prawns were not supposed to be cleaned. Heads and tails on is one thing, but leaving the digestive tract in the animal is disgusting and wrong.
I really wanted to like this place! The grounds are gorgeous.
We traveled all the way up for what we hoped was a special dinner after watching sunset upcountry. I made a reservation because we had a party of 7. We walked in, and were the only people in the place for the first half hour. Then they seated another table behind us and a very loud party of four using foul language on the other side of us. The table sat facing the kitchen and their white board with employee comments/doodles and employees who were not busy were hanging out in the doorway. The rest of the place was empty. So, I couldn't really understand why we were all crammed together in the worst location, other than it was right by the service area for the waiters so it was fewer steps to the kitchen.
The appetizer of mushrooms was very good. The waiter was pretty cheerful and fairly attentive, as he had the three tables that were dining that evening. But since we were close together, we were able to flag him for everything we needed. And we did have to wave him over most of the time.
The rest of the food was, unfortunately, awful. I had the stroganoff, which had no flavor at all. A big bowl of overcooked noodles, some tiny bits of prime rib mixed in and a dollop of sour cream in the middle. Don't order it.
We ordered a (expensive) caprese salad to split between my husband and myself. I seriously thought it was sashimi when he brought it. The tomatoes were sliced that thin. But, it was the best thing anyone had to eat at the table.
The short ribs had a very odd tangy flavor. Nephew ordered fries and has a shellfish allergy - so we asked about if they were fried in a separate fryer. It's a pretty common allergy. They use the same fryer, and said it would be too much effort to heat up the other fryer to accommodate his allergy situation.
Skip Kula Lodge, and go to Kula Bistro. The most expensive meal of our vacation/biggest disappointment all around.
Love the atmosphere up at Kula Lodge. We had a table against the window that looked out at the West Maui mountains and the valley between north and south Maui. Love the brick oven pizzas and French onion soup.
Had the best pizza ive ever had. Then breakfast was exceptional. To top it off, dinner was incredible..prime rib and scallops, shrimp and mahi mahi. 3 of best meals on maui period!
Kyla lodge was just fantastic! We slept over night at the lodge and had dinner and breakfast the next day. The food was outstanding! Everything fresh and delish! I truly recommend to stay overnight and enjoy their food and service!!!!
On 3/15/2018 we went to Kula lodge for dinner. We ordered drinks apps to start off. The waitress dropped off bread but did not give us plates to put it on. Had to ask for them. Our drinks came and she just put the bottle of wine on the table, did not pour. Salads and shrimp app were good. Goes downhill after that. Water glass were empty for a while, had to ask for refill. Dinners came; filets were ordered medium rare, they were over cooked. The seafood over linguini was over cooked and flavorless. One order was seafood platter over rice. It came over mash potatoes. “ oh I thought you all wanted mashed potatoes. And, his meal was $4 more than the linguini dish because it was suppose to have asparagus. Yep you guessed it, no asparagus. When the meals came she had to switch out our app and salad plates that had been sitting there for a while. It’s not that the waitress was busy, the place was quiet.
When we got our bill there was a kitchen tip on there. We didn’t say anything about it. I’ve read other reviews where they had it removed. The table next to us also did not receive what they ordered. A shame because the view is amazing from the restaurant. Bill was almost $300 for subpar food and service. Don’t waste your money going there. A sour end to a great tourist trip Day. Don’t know what happened to the place, was great years ago.
Kula lodge was fabulous. The fresh fish was delicious. The service was awesome! Next time I'll go for the Prime Rib.
This is a must experience in Maui - being in the "up-country" and finding that the island is more than beaches and fancy resorts. We dined at the Kula Lodge following a visit to the Kula Botanical Gardens and some great wine tasting. We had a window table overlooking, from 3000 feet up, the Maui valley all the way from Maalea Bay to Kahuli and the west Maui mountains beyond, plus a beautiful Hawaiian sunset. And after several seafood dinners (no complaints), we liked a menu with other offerings, such as short ribs and bbq ribs. The service was a bit slow in the beginning but picked up later. Worth the drive up from the coast.
Our waiter was extremely nice and well informed on any question we had for him. The food was good, prices were a little high compared to similar restaurants in Kihei or Kahului. I liked it so much that I decided to go back for a late lunch yesterday. Unfortunately the service was not the same. The older woman with glasses and dark hair was not very nice upon greeting and taking my name for seating. She said about a 15min wait and there were tables already available. She may have been the only person working. Needless to say, I left with my party of 3.
The rib eye was very under seasoned and the prime rib was over cooked. The seafood pasta dishes were good though
Food was good but service wasn't. Arrived early to sit in bar but whisked away to table instead.
Service: Bread basket plunked on my wifes bread plate as server walked by. Did not ask if we wanted dessert. Did not offer coffee. Felt ignored. Were not told about kitchen service charge. View and gardens were lovely.
The grounds and view are spectacular. A must if visiting upcountry Maui.
Excellent chef! Quality everything. Very good drinks.
Had a great evening with friends and great dinner
We live nearby, went here on Valentines Day, we were pleasantly greeted by the host, from there it went downhill fast. We were seated but no one gave us menus, after a good while we asked for menus.
We waited for the server to come and finally we had to flag the server down , and asked to order drinks.
Tea and coffee came... when I Put the cream in my tea it curdled. Soup and salad came, salad was not cold, and the soup which I expected be like French onion soup had no cheese on top - the presentation was subpar at best. Meanwhile the tables around us all had bread at their table so again we had to ask for bread. The bread came and it was nearly stale.
Meanwhile the dishes from the soup and salad and the bread plates that we used all piled up on the table, the waitress came by our table at least two times and never took a single dish away. Yes you guessed - we had to ask for someone to take the dishes, by this time with sever brought the entrees. My wife had prime rib and I had baby back ribs. The prime rib had so much fat and gristle it looked disgusting. My ribs were supposed to be smoked on a grill but they came smothered in so much sauce you couldn’t even tell they were ribs. Finally we had had enough the food was disgusting and we decided that we weren’t even going to eat our dinner and called for the manager. I explained all that had gone wrong and expected the meal be comped, it wasn’t. The manager even admitted that quality declines when it’s busy. After leaving, we checked Trip Advisor and Yelp and saw many dozens of bad reviews. Avoid eating or staying at Kula Lodge at all costs. Check reviews on Yelp, Trip Advisor and here, many bad reviews.
Completely enjoyable evening. Valentines Day celebration
Service was great but the food was not! Our shrimp scampi was overpowered by oregano and the crap cakes tasted like it was ready made frozen stuff. Sauce was not very creative. The only thing that was “alright” was the Caesar salad.
We went for Valentines.. took our two girls, 10 and 6. Would have sent every single dish back if we didn’t feel bad for the staff. Food was terrible. Even after sending back one fish for their signature “ribs” that was disappointing and drenched in sauce.
Staff was great. Manager tried to make up for it for a free dessert. Dessert was terrible which was weird cause we were here for New Years and it was our favorite and only memorable part of dinner. Not the same dessert.
Piano player is great. And played some Disney songs for the girls. Over $200 for three main dishes and a couple drink. We’ll pass.
We have enjoyed your restaurant for special occasions for many years. We will continue to enjoy 😊
Poor service from management. Restaurant manager and chef were rude when we told them of our dining experience. 4 of the 5 meals we ordered were incorrect. Pizza was burned. Short ribs were inedible. They charged us a “kitchen tip” fee and argued with us when we asked that the fee be removed. When they brought my check back there were 2 fees added. I had to direct them how to calculate a refund vs charging me twice. There’s more to mention here, however, I would recommend that you spend your money elsewhere. Poor customer service. Would never go back.
The food was terrible and extremely overpriced. My husband ordered a medium rare steak that wasn’t even seared and looked like a hunk of raw meat on this plate. I don’t even know how that was authorized to leave the kitchen. We were all disgusted by it. I ordered the beef stroganoff and it was definitely the worst version of that dish I’ve ever had. The portions were huge as if overcompensating. The staff was friendly and the location and view are appealing but the kitchen and menu need a total overhaul. Less is more! I would have rather had a grilled cheese sandwhich than throw money away on this place. It had the unique destinction of being the worst meal we had while on Maui.
The food was awesome and the service was great! We would definitely come back!
The filet with brandy peppercorn sauce was excellent and the short ribs were great. The scampi cocked nicely but was a bit bland and noodles done nicely. The garlic mashed potatoes should have been more fluffy as they came out a bit starchy and heavy but with good flavor. The drinks were great and the view, along with Erin’s attentive service, made it happen.
A very nice restaurant with a bit of a country feel. Cozy fireplace on entrance. Service and food great. Only surprise was the 3% "kitchen" fee. I'm tired of the ever-growing service fees and this put it over the top for me. It was expensive already. Why aren't the tips spread out to the kitchen staff like other restaurants do?
Great atmosphere and view. The food was very good, but pricey. There was live music and the service was very good
Love this place. Great ambiance. Sunsets are beautiful. Good food. Waiter James and staff courteous and very accommodating.
We enjoyed Kula Lodge and Restaurant! We stopped there after visiting the Haleakala Crater. It was especially cold up at the crater so it was very nice to come to a warm restaurant with the fireplace going! The food was delicious and service was very good as well!
Christmas night perfect ambience , great food, wonderful view , great service. Perfect choice for our Christmas dinner!
The Black and Bleu Ribeye had too much black pepper and WAAAAAAY too much bleu cheese. Prime rib should be cut a bit bigger (16oz) for the price. The wild mushroom appetizer lacked salt but was otherwise good.
Service was fine. Food was ok but would expect better for the prices. Second time I have been there and the food was the same both times. first time the pizza was undercooked and the second time daughter ordered a fish dish and the breading was soggy, it was not hot and flavor was bland. We didn't return it because we had waited so long. For 38.00 a plate I would expect better. Dinner for 5 was over 250.00 and all the dishes were average. Go for the view, ambiance and cocktails and you won't be disappointed, but if you are looking for excellent food this isn't the place.
Btw I live on maui.
Come for the view and setting, but not the food, at least for dinner. Breakfast and lunch are better options.
Service was terrible, reservations was @7, didn't get seated till 7:40. Food took over 2 hours to come, appetizer came same time as dinner. Wasn't tasty! The bill was $$! Wouldn't go again and Would not recommend!!!
Fish was overcooked for several of us on Christmas Eve. That was a disappointment. It was the Ono that was extremely dry and tasteless. Not a good meal. None of us wanted to send it back. It took forever to be delivered so was really not an option to send it back. There was not enough staff for the Christmas Eve dinner. We were sad as we are local and had family visiting.
We had Katie Rose as our server -she was wonderful. The food was very good and the sun-set was magical that night for myself (I live in Wailea) my sister from Vienna , and my daughter and son-in-law from Seattle for Christmas. We had a great time -love the fireplace!
The view is awesome. Food is good. Order dinner, then take your camera to the deck.
We are all locals, here for Thanksgiving Dinner. It did not disappoint! The food was good, the service was great, the ambiance terrific, and we felt like we had a real "winter experience" here on Maui. They had the fireplace going, and made wonderful hot toddies for us! All in all, we will be back!
