We are Vermont's premier Japanese restaurant, serving our guests since 1999. Come enjoy our Japanese ambiance with a pond full of koi fish and running water --always a hit with kids. Food and service were good. Fun place to bring a group. Count on $35pp for the dinner. Did have a problem with the OpenTable reservation where I reserved a 7 PM time and then received a call back about 3 hours later that only an 8 PM time was available. Suggest to call to confirm.
Fun for kids, not the favorite for adults. I wish the chefs would develop a new routine. It's the exact same cooking show every time, repetitive and somewhat boring. Our reservation specifically listed by daughters 13th birthday - this was ignored. Shrimp appetizer should be cooked and served first. I requested steamed white rice instead of friend rice - it was served with my salad, so it was cold by the time the entrees were papered. Entree food quality for steak, chicken and seafood was very good!
Terrific service. Good menu but terrible tempura and greasy negimaki. I don't think that there are enough Japanese staff - especially cooks. I could not eat the tempura the batter was so thick and like uncooked bread. Negimaki should not be greasy. Our service staff was very considerate and saw that my dinner cost was reduced as I couldn't eat the tempura.
The chef was very not interactive and he didn’t even speak English he mixed up all the order gave our filet migon to other people and then realized and then too it off their plate. Very bad and uncomfortable for everyone. He was robotic cooked at speed lighting
I really enjoy their filet here it is always cooked to perfection. We ordered the Godzilla roll which is also one of our favorite rolls and it had almost TOO much spicy mayo the flavor was almost overpowering. I appreciated the fast and attentive service because we had a 12 year old and he doesn’t have the best patience. He tried shrimp tempura for the first time and loved it! We will definitely be back again
We were there for my daughters birthday and were rushed through dinner at the hibachi in 45 minutes. I had made these reservations weeks in advance asking for the hibachi and that it was my daughter‘s birthday. I had originally made the reservation for 7:00 but was then contacted and told we had to do 6:30 and ended up sitting at the bar for quite a while before even being seated. They had some kind of UVM gatherings with lots of people going on there, I guess that took presidence. Our server was awesome and it was not his fault. We were not chargeed for our desserts as a way of trying to apologize but it was really disappointing from start to finish. Not what we expected from Kotos. Not sure we will be back.
We were a party of 6 with an added 7th we were able to call ahead for and be accommodated. We were seated at a hibachi table (though not requested and didn't order any) so the staff was a little confused but allowed us to stay where they seated us. Some difficulties getting the waiter's attention from time to time but he was also very patient with food allergy questions! Food and drinks were deliciousz
Pretty much in line with the Koto Japanese restaurant in Albany.
The food is prepared in front of you; 2 of us had the steak, 1 of us had the scallops. 2 sides of fried rice, 1 side of noodles.
Everything was very tasty.
What I wasn't prepared for was the noise; clanging utensils behind me hit a discordant and irritating note. Then it was our turn and the discordant notes moved in front of us. There were times when I winced from the clanging. I was happy to have the ample portions of rice, fried vegetables, and steak served.
This was probably similar to my several other Koto experiences but this one just didn't sit well - possibly due to the 3 hour drive from Albany.
I will most likely return, possibly with ear plugs or noise cancelling head phones.
The hostess that was greeting and seating this evening did not have a great attitude nor good customer service skills. Openly rolled her eyes and berated other staff in front of customers and was rude to patrons. The rest of our meal was great as usual, good food and wait staff.
No wait. Is that good? Our waiter was nice but clueless! He picked up our soup bowls - plunked my gues's bowl into mine- and left a splash of soup on the table right in front of me - apparently did not notice it and made no attempt to wipe it up. It felt passive- aggressive though he was pleasant enough. He kept coming by giving the distinct impression that he was pressuring us to leave- finish and leave! finish and leave! It was obvious that we were just chatting and trying to have a leisurely early dinner. There was no line so I don't know why he was trying to hustle us out of his section - it actually made us die laughing, but under different circumstances it would be very unpleasant. The chicken and the pork were freshly fried and very crisp and delicious; the sides were completely uninspired and left a lot to be desired. Apparently the idea is you should order alcohol and you should order appetizers and you skould order dessert in order to be treated fairly at Koto's.
Our waitress got pretty much every item on my sushi order wrong: tuna instead of salmon, toro instead of wasabiko, no low sodium soy until requested twice, etc., etc..Plus, I think we were overcharged, especially on the sushi. That said, I have always had good experiences at Koto until this one, and the fish is always good quality.
So I will return, but cautiously.
Need much better ventilation. Gas and smoke fumes were very irritating. Need shades in the solarium. We sat at the hibachi and were blinded by the sun. Usually, the food is great but this time we were not asked how we wanted our steaks cooked. They were all overdone and underseasoned. An unnecessary amount of butter was used. Last people served received a sparse amount of onions and mushrooms for a vegetable.
