Kora restaurant - bar - lounge Ratings and Reviews
We arrived early for our reservation and the host allowed us to sit at one of the high-top bar tables to wait. It was quite a while before someone brought us drink menus and take our drink order, but once we were seated service was fast. Food was great and prices reasonable. The salume plate was excellent! We've eaten here several times, and food is always very good.
The food was very good but the service was disappointing! We waited for almost 10 mins for our waiter to even arrive at our table. When he approached us, he commented, "I'm here. I'm here!" He seemed frustrated with helping us the entire time. The food was brought out in three groups. As a table of 10, we realize the food would take longer but we did expect to eat together. What we had was delicious, but the service made for a frustrating night!
Restaurant staff seemed completely unable to deal with a crowd. Long waits to place an order, get table settings, get plates for bread, get water.
Food was completely ordinary. One party member was told that her choice was no longer available 15 minutes after our order went in. She selected a different item from the menu (after she requested a menu. Initially she was told to order something else off the top of her hear), and was given a third item that was never requested. When it arrived 10 minutes after the rest of the entrees and she informed the wait staff it wasn't what she ordered, the response was insistence that she had.
Kora sucks. Given the size of the space I'm very surprised it hasn't closed.
This was my first time at Kora and sadly may have to be my last. The food was terrible. I got the pappardelle and it was watered down and pretty much inedible. I didn't complain because I was there with a business client, however, I won't be back. I should never have lunch at a restaurant and leave hungry.
I have been to Kora several times because it is convenient for business, but I continue to be underwhelmed. The décor is unremarkable, the staff is lackadaisical, the food is average at best, and the service is inconsistent. For example, this time, I got the Caesar salad, and the dressing was basically just mayonnaise. I had the sautéed chicken with came in a bland marsala like sauce over a bed of sphagetti noodles. It was a dish that wasn't sure what it wanted to be. The service this time was ok, but on previous occasions it has been poor. To me, Kora is mediocre across the board.
Had a very enjoyable dinner. The stuffed eggplant was well done. My wife ordered the Pappardelle and quite enjoyed that dish. This is my third time stopping at this restaurant when I am in the Crystal City area on trips. Normally the bread is quite good, this time it was a little crusty but still tasty. Ordered the Tiramisu for desert and it was quite tasty.
This was not our first visit to this neighborhood restaurant...but we will not rush back. Food was prepared as ordered and was very good. The hostest and our waitress seem new and inexperienced. Waitress didn't seem to know the menu. Noise level was over the top with a loud group at the bar...had not experienced that before. Too many good places in the same vicinity.
Nice menu with excellent northern Italian wine list. Great menu options for extended happy hour, including half-portions of pasta and other entrees.
We sat outside which was beautiful, but the service was slower than usual. The apple martinis and salume plate were excellent but the lasagne was just okay.
Bread for the table was good, but the olive oil mix for dipping needed salt, and there was nine on the table.
We like Kora and will return.
The food was pretty good, but it took 30 minutes to get our wine. When it came out, the order was incorrect and we had to wait for them to take that away and bring another set over. Appetizers came out after the food. The kids enjoyed it and they were happy, but we were a bit frustrated. The music was nice.
Dinner was good but not a standout, well prepared and well presented, ambiance was nice, but too bright. It seems the menu has declined a bit, more standard fares than the more creative items in the past. Service was excellent, fast, pleasant, professional. There was an odd odor in the air upon entry and the entire time there, not food related and not an added fragrance. The menu seemed more oriented towards tour bus crowds (two pulled up while we were there) and less on pleasing the locals, to include using a simple laminated menu. Although we didn't ask, there didn't appear to be any focus on special dietary menu options, something of an issue these days. Overall a good, but not exceptional experience, within a level expected for the price range.
Amazing food, pleasant service. One of us had the salmon, one had the NY Strip Steak and one had pasta. Nice variety of craft cocktails, relaxed (but good) pace of service. The only distraction was the poker game that was going on in the first half of the room. I will definitely go back, but not on poker night. It got a little loud.
While the food may have been really good, the following was my experience:
6:30 reservations for a table for 8 were made WEEKS in advance. That day we added 2 more people.
7:00 PM we were sat at our table.
7:19 pm our waitress finally showed up so we gave our entire order so we didn't have to wait longer to go through this process.
7:22 pm 2 baskets of bread were dropped off by a busser
7:25 pm had to scavenge napkins from other tables around us because there were none at our table
7:35 pm we received water for the first time.
7:45 our drinks arrived. 2 of the orders were incorrect, even though they were ordered while being pointed at on the menu
7:49 correct wines were delivered
7:58 entrees delivered. Adults in first wave, kids later.
No appetizers were received.
8:05 Appetizers were attempted to be delivered even though we already asked two separate people to cancel them since were were already eating our entrees
The one person who ordered a 3 course prix fixe dinner did finally get their salad, though.
When the check came, I had to circle two of the apps that we never had and ask them to be removed. When the check came back, I had to ask for another appetizer item to be removed that hadn't been on the first check
We gave 2 credit cards to split the bill, wrote the amount and name from each credit card on the receipt and the waitress came back to say that they couldn't split the check that way, that we had to divide all the items up by which was to be charged on which card.
Worst service ever. NO Manager backup. Barely any other backup and during the time we were actually sat, the restaurant had gotten LESS busy.
No excuse for this kind of service.
Most everyone within 60 miles of DC knows that Crystal City turns into a ghost town after around 8pm weekdays and weekends. Yet the restaurants are still open. I was at Kora with friends after a conference in a nearby event. I have been there before during busy times and it was great. But this time it was a Thursday at 8pm and it was like a completely different wait staff. The fellow that waited the table came once to deliver the menus, messed up the soda orders, came back for the order, and then never reappeared until we flagged down the fellow with the cane that got someone to come refill our sodas. I am glad this wasn't a business dinner trying to win a customer. But it didn't speak well for me suggesting it with peer executives.
As for the meal, most of it was done right. But the steak on salad was overdone.
I am just amazed at the difference between a Thursday evening and a Friday night out.
Service during lunch hour was lackluster. Server had no personality and we were seated for a while before anyone greeted us or took our beverage order...by which time we had already decided what we wanted to order and had been chatting for quite a bit. Restaurant is open and spacious, and the purple interior scheme is calming. Once it commenced, the service was reliable - food came out in a reasonable period of time and drinks were refilled proactively.
Great balance of original and comfort for travellers and locals. Kids had pizza and spaghetti, both were excellent. Chicken parmasean was excellent as well. Vibrant scene, not too fancy and not too laid back. Solid performer for the restaurants of crystal city.
