Kona Kai Sushi - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
I made the reservation on OpenTable so when we arrived we were led to seats at the sushi bar.
As there were three empty tables I asked if we could sit at a table. We were told by the "manager" that since we made our reservation on OpenTable we would have to sit at the bar. I don't mind sitting at the bar when it is my choice to do so or when I am asked if I wouldn't mind.
However, I do object to being seated there when there are empty tables available. We declined and left the restaurant. About halfway down the walkway to the parking lot the "manager" came outside and said there was a table for us if we wanted it. Once we were seated the meal and service were quite good. The empty tables never did get occupied while we were there.
We had been here previously and this visit did not disappoint. The food is good. It is sort of an adventure tasting the many appetizers that we have never tried before: Natto, radishes, stuffed calimari, mushrooms. All good, some delicious. The staff are excellent in suggesting items and also explaining the different selection of sakes. And they are all so young and courteous. The nigiri sushi was very good. It is not inexpensive but worth it. Recommended.
I have been to Kona Kai Sushi about 4 times. Every experience gets better and better. Everyone who works here is so nice! The food is amazing! The fish is really fresh and unlike some places I have been to they really respect the fish here!!! I have eaten at a lot of sushi restaurants over the years and this is by far my FAVORITE.
Fantastic sushi, always super fresh. The toro and ikura, in particular, were melt in your mouth fresh. Shrimp tempura was spot on, the tempura batter was very light and the shrimp was perfectly cooked, so tender. We ordered ika prepared two ways, steamed (cooked perfectly) and deep fried (overcooked and tough, unfortunately), served with 3 sauces. There was one sauce prepared with ika innards that was AMAZING. The dish was worth ordering for that sauce alone. The one dish I didn't care for was the spider roll. It was more like a rainbow roll with soft shell crab, and was served swimming in a very sweet sauce. I like my spider rolls crispy and savory, not sweet. Spider roll and overcooked ika led to downgraded 4 stars. But generally we love this place and will be back for sure!
Kona Kai Sushie was very delicious! It's one of the best sushi places that I have ever been to. I suggest going for the Omakase dinner. The chefs just keep making you assorted food items until you tell them to stop. You don't get to pick what dishes that they make, but you can give them guidelines of what you don't like or can't eat before they begin. You only pay for what you eat, but be warned.... The bill does add up! Be prepared to spend about $125 to $175 per person depending on how much you eat as well as how much alcohol you drink
This was my first visit here, and I can at least say I tried this restaurant. The food was tasty, but very pricey, and portions were very small. Normally, sushi has little rice and a large piece of raw fish or whatever topping that hangs over the rice. Here, sushi toppings are meager, just covering the rice. Considering the price, too much for my budget. Five of us spent $350, some of us barely eating, and we all walked out still hungry.
My husband and I come here almost every week for our date night, and we are both huge sushi fans! We could probably go somewhere a little more budget friendly, but we work hard and we've earned it! =)
The food is fresh, delicious and presented very well.
The atmosphere is casual and friendly, and the service is always on point!
Definitely one of our favorite spots on this island!
