Kona Grill - Troy Ratings and Reviews
Finished shopping at the mall, but wanted better than Mall Food for dinner. Kona Grill was a great choice! We were not dressed to impress, others were dressed nicer as if for a party. Kona Grill works well for either. The evening's special included Steak Oscar with Asparagus. It was delicious and generously portioned. We actually could have split it, but my wife was happy to take some home for lunch the next day. The sushi looked fresh, and we heard positive comments from other diners. Menu looks good. We'll be back for sushi and more.
I was excited to try Kona Grill but was pretty disappointed. To start off, it was fairly busy and my server seemed pretty slammed. Although she was very nice, she failed to come around enough to check on us at appropriate times, including after many rounds of food hit the table.
The food was lackluster. The poke would have been good if the pieces of tuna and salmon weren't chopped that fine and the fish hadn't tasted too old to serve at as seafood joint. The coconut shrimp roll we ordered was a 5 piece roll-- which was surprisingly small. Still, would have been able to enjoy it if the shrimp was in the whole roll, rather than in 3 pieces and the rest being batter. The other roll we ordered was forgettable-- I literally can't even remember it besides the fact that we felt sad eating it. Nothing was impressive, nothing was super fresh and tasty. Mediocre at best. At least our friends seemed to enjoy their tuna sliders.
I also ordered the sake flight and was happy to see it on their menu. But it all arrived at lukewarm/room temperature. I would have enjoyed it much more had they been served properly chilled.
Overall, the value was terrible for this experience. Probably will not be returning again.
Kona Grill is a great restaurant with delicious food. However, we were seated along the west wall (under the windows) of the restaurant, on a very cold night. The draft coming in from the windows had all six people in our party cold enough to ask for our seats to be relocated. Once relocated, the evening resumed it’s five star status.
I left the Kona Grill feeling “meh”. I have dined there twice in the past and always had a pleasant experience. We had reservations for my family and parents on the night befor Thanksgiving for dinner, 4 adults and 2 kids. Our service was friendly enough and we promptly revived drinks and our appetizer upon sitting. I will also point out that my son has several allergies (soy, dairy and peanuts) and our server was very attentive with his menu. However then things went down hill. We ordered the kids meals right with the appetizer and got them 30 minutes later. Our own dinners took 45. It did not seem like the restaurant was exceptionally busy (the main dining room was half empty when we were seated), but our server was slow to check back on us and with every request- boxes, the check and even refills. All the food tasted great, but still feel like the overall experience was just “meh”.
Well it started out good, they had our table and we were able to get our drinks in a timely fashion. But then when it came to are main course it took over an hour and mind you it was soup and sushi for one order and the other was just the kona burger. The bun on the burger was hard as if it was old and the burger had no taste and under cooked. The manager did stop by and talked to us about the issue and took action. This is a place that i frequent so i will give them another chance because they have had great food in the past.
My server forgot almost everything I asked for.. I orders the shrimp poké bowl with a side of aoli sauce. She forgot the sauce, never came over to table touch so I could ask for the sauce again. Also, I stopped 2 extra waitress to ask for the sauce and they told me they would gladly bring it over and never did.
Waited 40 minutes for our food - two sushi rolls and a small rice bowl (zero cooking)- on a Wednesday night with a reservation at 5:30. We received food and had to immediately pack it up so we didn't miss our show downtown Detroit. (fun eating rice with chopsticks and driving) It was not lack of timing on my part. It was the kitchen, not the waitstaff. My date who had never been there said we should have gone somewhere else........
This was dinner for my husbands birthday, since this is his favorite restaurant. Unfortunately Kona Grill fell very short this time. I made my reservation online and then called the restaurant to ask to have my husband surprised with his favorite dessert. When we checked in, the hostess reconfirmed the brownie was to be served at our table as soon as we were done with dinner. That information some how never made it to my waitress. When I asked the waitress she apologized and said she would ask her manager and get the birthday dessert asap. She then promptly brought the butter cake, not the brownie and ice cream as requested and confirmed with the hostess. She also served it with 1 fork so that the rest of our table shared it using the left over chopsticks from our sushi. I was very disappointed, I let the hostess know as we were leaving the restaurant, she apologized and I can honestly say I will not come back for a special occasion dinner going forward.
