Kona Grill - Tampa Ratings and Reviews
Great food but far from a great experience.
Every single dish that was delivered to our table was simply fantastic. We had the gouda appetizer, churrasco steak, as well as several variations of sushi and sushi plates. Nothing on any of the plates could be considered just okay, every item was prepared well with a perfect amount of flavor.
The service was lacking but not horrible. Forgetting my drink for the complete meal, having to remind her to bring out one of our dishes, and doing nothing for my daughter's birthday is just some of why I say the service is lacking. I am positive she was informed that it was my daughter's birthday since the hostess mentioned it, I explained in the special instructions that we wanted the focus on her that night since it was her birthday. Additionally, she seemed a bit lost and lacked any energy when asked questions about the menu. Almost seemed like we were bothering her.
I was expecting this place, based on location and menu prices, to be a place I could hold a conversation with people at my table without having to yell. Not the case, this place is loud. It is not somewhere I would take a date or celebrate a special occasion. It didn't help that we were sat next to a loud table, but I think it was because they had no choice considering the noise level in general.
Even though the food was fantastic, I simply couldn't wait to get the bill, which was wrong since it included the cost of the drink I never received, and get out. The food was so good I would consider takeout, but to pay those prices and not get an experience with good food will keep us away.
Kona Grill is a very special place. I have used it many times for special occasions such as anniversaries. The food and atmosphere are outstanding. One of the best dishes is the Sea Bass.
I would recommend this place to anyone in search of a special place for a special occasion.
We had the nicest server. Unlike so many restaurants, all the staff we engaged with were so terrific. Being older we try to avoid noisy places. At our request we were seated toward the rear of the restaurant where it is quieter. Certainly would recommend Kona Grill. The sushi was good and reasonable.
Good Food Slow Service.
We had lunch during the week and on Sunday, both times service was very, very slow. We have waited both times at least 10 minutes just to see our server to get the drink order. The food is very good and a lot variety. I hope the managment will hire more servers or train the existant ones better.
No doubt this is a vibrant bar scene. Pretty outdoor seating with heaters running. Nice indoor decor and not too busy. Bar is welcoming. However the food was only average and the price was high. I would recommend for happy hour or drinks before dinner. But if your looking for food head elsewhere.
The food was mediocre for the prices they charge. The evening we went there, their heating was not working on the coldest days of the year and it was literally freezing inside. There were a few people who were so uncomfortable with the temperature that they left the restaurant without eating.
We had a great NYE experience for an early dinner. Our table was ready even before our reservation time, and our waitress (Shayna ) was super charming and attentive, highly recommendable. The portions were larger than we thought and well worth the price, especially the huge piece of carrot cake we weren’t able to make room for, but saw at the table next to us.
Food was great but the service was ok at best. Our server had tables all over the place and it was not a busy lunch. Our food took over 30 minutes to be made and it was just sushi. I will come back and eat again as it is delicious but I was a little disappointed this trip.
There was not really anything that set this place apart from other establishments. The food was good, not wonderful, the atmosphere was noisy, but during the holidays it is hard to find someplace quiet. The ambiance was okay, the dark, romantic vibe, but the music was more pop/edm. As for the date portion of my experience, it was positive. This was an anniversary date and we were satisfied.
We will give it another shot. Hopefully it will be a more thrilling review.
The food was good with the exception of the cucumber salad that was ordered by a vegetarian as it contained shrimp, which wasn’t listed on the menu. The service was less than ideal and reflected in the 10% tip that was left for the server. I’ve been to the location previously and enjoyed my experience. If I visit again and receive the same level of service, I will no longer be a patron of the establishment.
