Kona Grill - Stamford Ratings and Reviews
Had a reservation for 8 yet the table was not setup when I arrived - and the restaurant was not very busy. Why make a reservation is the table is not ready? Also three or us had a problem with our order as far as the wrong items or ingredients. The staff was very nice and apologetic however. But for an almost empty restaurant, I don't understand why it was so difficult to have a table ready and get our orders right.
Sadly, it appears Kona Grill has not yet reached bottom, but continues to slide. The Kona Chopped salad is about 25% smaller than originally, with no bacon in sight and some of the chicken came in large pieces, so we could do the cutting. As others noted, sushi prep takes forever. Since they are probably at the top end of their competitive price range, they are reducing quality and quantity. Mitchell's, PF Chang's and Cosi have left this strip entering the Stamford Mall, I fear Kona will be next. Apparently the discount apps and half price wine nights may be the only things keeping them afloat.
Its an interesting menu with something to please everyone. The restaurant wasn't crowded at all and our service was slow, which was okay because we were there to linger. But not when we wanted our coffee at the end of the meal. The booth seats have little cushion left in them so little that one of our friends had to use a couple coats to sit on. They are a sushi place and don't offer brown rice - surprised. Waitress mentioned we were the 3rd person to ask that day.
I've been there many times in the past and have loved it. This time, however, it was terrible. The cleanliness at the table was poor - the table was dirty and sticky, the place mats had food in them and were sticky. Our waiter tried to clean everything, but our arms were still sticking to the table. (yuck). They changed the menu - fine, but paired ratatouille (French) with Asian style sea bass and fried rice. Bizarre. The ambiance was nice - eating outside on a beautiful night and nice outside lighting. The waiter disappeared and we had to track him down a few times--for our drink order (& we only got 2 of 4 drinks ordered), appetizer order, etc. We debated leaving - service took forever and it was embarrassing to have guests along to a restaurant we recommended with the experience so poor..
As always the food was outstanding! Our server did a great job by keeping us informed but unfortunately she had to do quite a bit of apologizing for things taking a long time to come out. It was not even 1/3 full so I don't understand the problems. First our three drinks from the bar took a very long time. 1 Sangria and two margaritas (not frozen). The sushi bar was understaffed because they had to apologize to us and another table about the long wait for sushi. The hot apps and the entrees were spot on. We could not have enjoyed them more. The last course was a problem again. The desserts were fantastic but we asked for 3 double espressos with a shot of Frangelica in each. Apparently the espressos sat on the bar until the bartender got around to pouring the shots in and by the time they got to the table they were cold. This place has been around for a long time. That is a rookie mistake that I don't understand. Bring the shots to the table then bring the hot espresso with the desserts. We will go back because of the food. Hopefully the service will improve.
The noise level was unbearable. For that reason alone I would not recommend Kona Grill. Our server was great. I had a spice problem with the chicken potstickers and there was no problem with getting an alternative dish. I guess it's great if you're into the bar scene.
Good food but service could be better. We had a friendly waiter who disappeared. One of our party members has a gluten allergy that he revealed prior to ordering, and rather than substitute a gluten free option for the sauce that accimpanied the Kona filet, the waiter simply told our friend not to eat it. When asked he then went into the kitchen and the chef prepared a gluten free subsitute of the same sauce. It took awhile and the meal was almost finished by that time. The salmon with rice was good but the accompanying bok choy was chewy and hard to cut. The sushi a neighboring diner had looked good. We sat outside as it was nice. The iron chairs scrape horribly. There must be a way to muddle the sound.
Afternoon lunch and drinks with the girls to celebrate a birthday started with Happy Hour! The time then switched to regular priced menu, but still worth it. All the food is delicious. Our waitress, Danielle, was very kind and approachable. Food, drinks and dessert was amazing!
My wife and I dined at Kona for my birthday dinner. I had received a gift card from an acquaintance and decided to apply it toward a celebratory dinner. We'd only been to Kona for happy hours in the past.
At our request, we were seated in a quiet "private" room setting. While not alone, it was quieter and calmer than the main dining room which still had families with young children.
Our server was very attentive and made great recommendations. The food was delicious and cooked to order. The size of the birthday cake was very big... more than even the 2 of us could handle at this sitting. In short, it was a very nice dining experience! We'll be back!
Kona Grill is a bit of an enigma. The interior is visually interesting and unique. People always remark on the aquarium wall as well as the light fixtures when they visit for the first time, and with good reason. The service can be hit or miss and the restaurant never seems very busy, though that's probably an optical illusion due its rather cavernous interior. The food is an eclectic menu of seafood & sushi. The appetizers we've had have been hit or miss, but the entrees whether beef, seafood, or sushi have been consistently good. It frequently offers Open Table 1000 bonus reservations, which is always appreciated. I don't think this place delivers on its promise, but I don't think it disappoints either. A place you'll likely enjoy, but not likely rave about.
The menu is a little unfocused -- it features a lot of Hawaiian-inspired Asian flavors and sushi, but also some Cajun items and other dishes that seemed a bit random (to me).
But we mostly enjoyed what we got: "angry" edamame, potstickers, oriental salad with macadamia chicken, glazed salmon. I especially liked the fried rice that came with the salmon.
Our server was pleasant, if not completely attentive. I would give it another shot to try other appealing items on the menu.
I saw all the mediocre reviews but my friend really wanted the passion fruit creme brûlée dessert so we chose Kona. It wasn't busy yet service was slow. They were out of the dish we wanted, the sea bass AND the dessert my friend came for. Again, it wasn't busy. Why are dishes sold out? The macadamia chicken wasn't good and the sushi was rice heavy. My friend's rare seared tuna turned out to be just raw and rolled in sesame seeds. Bleh. And for some reason the manager was banging on the women's bathroom door which made my friend uncomfortable. I don't even know why he was doing that. We liked the drinks. I wouldn't return to Kona nor would I recommend it to others.
Nice casual atmosphere. Avocado eggrolls are great! Entrees & veggiges all very good.We had a new server. While she was very upbeat & friendly items were mis-ordered & we were overcharged for some items. We both sent back the creme brulee bc it was cold. There was no accommodation for that either.
Really disappointing. I have eaten at multiple Kona Grills across the country and we must have hit this one on a night where they had completely lost control in the kitchen before we arrived at 8:00 for our reservation. The service took forever, drinks were never refilled and the kitchen was obviously backed up as everything too a very long time. Once the meals arrived one meal was competely cold (jambalaya) and the burger we ordered medium was completely overdone. It took over 20 minutes to get the new burger and the new one was not much better. Two add insult to injury, the original check had us charged for 2 burgers rather than one (they subsequently removed both of them). I hope this is not a representative night as the overall experience was just awful.
A first date and we wanted to talk . Made that very clear to our waitress. Nevertheless, she
interrupted us every 10 minutes in the most annoying way. Her demeanor was crude, crass and unprofessional. The dirty uniform / clothes did nothing to impress us. This place can do better!
Had a dinner recently at Kona Grill. We really enjoyed our meal. We ordered the Angry Edamame... fantastic. We also got a number of different sushi rolls and some other good sides. All were good and fresh. Only downside here is that it's clearly a very "corporate" restaurant and menu. We ordered two different desserts (Spiced Apple Bread Pudding & Snickers Ice Cream Pie). The portions are HUGE, so keep that in mind! The Snickers ice cream was fantastic. The spiced apple bread pudding was just okay.
Unfortunately, our service during this visit was really bad. We were sitting for 45 minutes before any beverages (Water or wine) had been delivered to our table. Our server was tough to find, and everything took longer than it should have. I think that it did get better as the meal went on, but still left much to be desired!
