Had a reservation for 8 yet the table was not setup when I arrived - and the restaurant was not very busy. Why make a reservation is the table is not ready? Also three or us had a problem with our order as far as the wrong items or ingredients. The staff was very nice and apologetic however. But for an almost empty restaurant, I don't understand why it was so difficult to have a table ready and get our orders right.
Sadly, it appears Kona Grill has not yet reached bottom, but continues to slide. The Kona Chopped salad is about 25% smaller than originally, with no bacon in sight and some of the chicken came in large pieces, so we could do the cutting. As others noted, sushi prep takes forever. Since they are probably at the top end of their competitive price range, they are reducing quality and quantity. Mitchell's, PF Chang's and Cosi have left this strip entering the Stamford Mall, I fear Kona will be next. Apparently the discount apps and half price wine nights may be the only things keeping them afloat.
Its an interesting menu with something to please everyone. The restaurant wasn't crowded at all and our service was slow, which was okay because we were there to linger. But not when we wanted our coffee at the end of the meal. The booth seats have little cushion left in them so little that one of our friends had to use a couple coats to sit on. They are a sushi place and don't offer brown rice - surprised. Waitress mentioned we were the 3rd person to ask that day.
Service was good, food was ok. Only real drawback was that they didn't have around half the beers on their menu. 2nd time this has happened.
Really enjoyed the salmon with shrimp and pork fried rice. Also recommend the dumplings.
Overall pretty good. Cute waitresses, good food, nice restaurant. Too many small flying insects.
I've been there many times in the past and have loved it. This time, however, it was terrible. The cleanliness at the table was poor - the table was dirty and sticky, the place mats had food in them and were sticky. Our waiter tried to clean everything, but our arms were still sticking to the table. (yuck). They changed the menu - fine, but paired ratatouille (French) with Asian style sea bass and fried rice. Bizarre. The ambiance was nice - eating outside on a beautiful night and nice outside lighting. The waiter disappeared and we had to track him down a few times--for our drink order (& we only got 2 of 4 drinks ordered), appetizer order, etc. We debated leaving - service took forever and it was embarrassing to have guests along to a restaurant we recommended with the experience so poor..
Have been here before. Food OK and plentiful. All appetizers very good - salads had too much dressing - better to serve on the side. Servers well trained. Not cheap.
I did not care for the macadamia nut chicken- the chicken tasted old and brined and had a lot of cartilage. My companion enjoyed his entree very much. Sushi was good. Overall I would not go back, but maybe I picked the wrong featured dish.
As always the food was outstanding! Our server did a great job by keeping us informed but unfortunately she had to do quite a bit of apologizing for things taking a long time to come out. It was not even 1/3 full so I don't understand the problems. First our three drinks from the bar took a very long time. 1 Sangria and two margaritas (not frozen). The sushi bar was understaffed because they had to apologize to us and another table about the long wait for sushi. The hot apps and the entrees were spot on. We could not have enjoyed them more. The last course was a problem again. The desserts were fantastic but we asked for 3 double espressos with a shot of Frangelica in each. Apparently the espressos sat on the bar until the bartender got around to pouring the shots in and by the time they got to the table they were cold. This place has been around for a long time. That is a rookie mistake that I don't understand. Bring the shots to the table then bring the hot espresso with the desserts. We will go back because of the food. Hopefully the service will improve.
