Kona Grill - Phoenix Ratings and Reviews
The service was terrible. It took an hour just to get bread. I ordered chicken that tasted like rubber. It was a birthday celebration for my brother and they didn't even do anything. My husband ordered salad and sushi for his dinner and was still hungry and asked for another sushi ..,,never got it :(
Wouldn't recommend this place
The service and cocktails were as expected: Very Good. Our food was excellent. We arrived at 4 p.m. for a business dinner, and all was well until they turned up the music. It was Tuesday afternoon/evening and the location was not crowded, but the noise level quickly became like a Friday or Saturday night. We could barely hear each other speak. That forced our business discussion to end, and we left Kona just after 7:30 p.m. without achieving our goal. As mentioned, on Friday at the end of the business week I would expect that noise level, but not on a Tuesday.
A couple who we have known for three years gave us a $50 gift certificate to show their appreciation for a pair of event tickets we had given them when my wife felt too ill to attend. We waited for our anniversary to try the Kona Grill because it was a little too far from home for a "normal" night out.
Our waiter gave us very thorough descriptions of his favorite menu items. We ordered Tempora Shrimp to share, followed by Sea Bass for her and chicken for me. Of course, we shared tastes of each of these fabulous entrees. The bottle of Conundrom went well with both dishes. We finished with a huge slice of Carrot Cake. The servings were all too big for reasonable eaters, but we had left-overs of everything for lunch the next day.
Yes,we will take the long drive again.
We went in on a Saturday evening and they weren't very busy, there were a lot of empty tables. It took quite a while for our server to greet us. We ordered the Angry Edamame and it was way to spicy to eat so we ordered the plain edamame, it was good. We ordered 3 rolls and two pieces of salmon sushi. The rolls were completely tasteless and the seaweed wrap was so tough I couldn't even chew it. The salmon in the sushi was tasteless as well, my husband said the rice had more flavor than the fish. Again it took quite a while for our server to bring us our check. It was a disappointing experience for sure, we won't return.
They were super nice from the moment we walked in. Our waitress was pleasant and dealt with our lack of decision making. The food was great!!! We got potstickers and they were amazing just the sauce was a little bland.
We split 5 rolls and all of them were wonderful! My favorite was the Picasso. It was beautiful and tasty.
We got butter cake and passion fruit creme brûlée. Both were so great! Although I do wish the brûlée was a little more set.
Overall, good drinks and good food.
We just moved to Phoenix and went to Kona Grill for our 35th wedding anniversary dinner. I entered that on our open table reservation as the reservation type and in comments section. No recognition of any form even verbally. The KC Kona Grill always provided a free desert when it was our anniversary dinner. Other than that all was great!
It just wasn't my kind of place? It is a lot of fish and seafood and I am not into seafood or fish. It was very noisy. They had our name on the list but seated us in the bar area and not the dining area so it was loud. Our friends go there all the time because they love their hamburgers so I think it just us.
Where do I start? I made an 8:45 reservation on OpenTable and received a call from the hostess at 8:41 asking if I will still planning on keeping my reservation. When I replied yes she informed me that I would have to order as soon as I sat down because the kitchen would be closing immediately even though there was still a 9:00 pom reservation available on OpenTable when we walked in. We sat down and the waitress immediately brought us menus and told us that we had to order immediately because the kitchen was closing. We did and then she disappeared. 15 minutes later she brought me what was supposed to be Miso Soup. This was clearly the boiled down remnants of what used to be Miso Soup. When I asked her what it was she took it away and said she would ask the kitchen. When she returned she informed me that the kitchen staff told her, "don't talk to us, we are trying to get out of here" sooooo never got an answer there. Then the food came. What was supposed to be sushi was actually a rushed tex mex version of what the cooks chose to call sushi. Covered in Siracha, poorly constructed, drown in sauces, this was anything but what one would expect from a restaurant carrying the supposed rating that OpenTable has given it. Oh and to top it off, the waitress literally dropped our food and didn't come back for 25 minutes. We were one of maybe 2 tables in the restaurant and I had to go get a refill of water from the bar myself. I WILL NEVER return to this dump. I NEVER tip less that 20% but this gem took the cake. I strongly suggest that you do not waste your money at this place. Go to dinner where people care about quality and service. There are places everywhere that actually care about their customers. Sorry for the rant but this was just too much not to share.
Indicated this was for a birthday on the online reservation form but was never acknowledged during our dinner. Service was very slow. We had to wait about 10 min. after being seated before we were offered water or drinks. We did not get a welcoming vibe from the waiter. And he just walked by our table several times when it was clear that we were finished with our apps and dinner. We had to. Ask about a dessert menu. Food was great but the service was very lacking for the price. I have eaten at this Kona several times and will chalk this up to an anomoly.
I made a reservation to celebrate my husband's graduation and put that in the notes. At no point during any of the experience did they acknowledge that. When we walked in, the hostess was helping another guest. She continued to help them and didn't even looked our way or said hello for a solid two minutes. She finally mumbled "what can I do for you?" without ever looking up and then kept doing her thing even though I gave her my name. Another hostess came up and asked if she could help and I gave her my name. On the way back I asked for a gluten free menu. She said she would grab it for me. Our server came over and greeted us and the hostess had not returned with my menu so I walked back up front to get it. She was standing there but did not acknowledge me at all. Another guy (who was incredibly friendly all night) asked if he could help and he gave me the menu. He even made sure to point out that it has two sides and only one is gluten free. The food and our server were great, but the two hostesses up front were terrible. If it was just on them I would award zero stars.
Though the restaurant was not busy the waitress was very hurry hurry with little time to talk with friends, look at the menu and understand the Happy Hour options before dining. She will no doubt improve with training and experience, however were I to take guests I would seek another server. Food was average.
I debated this response because I have found Kona grill to be a great place for lunch and dinner in the past. However, my last visit was not up to standard. It took 75 minutes to receive our food as did other patrons. The waitress was great and continued to explain and apologize but it did not improve the timing. It was clear that the kitchen was struggling. I asked to see the manager and a very nice young man stopped by the table and apologized for the slow service and said that too many people came in at the same time. I get it..but its not my problem. I do think management should have been proactive and make rounds to all the tables before we started complaining. I think maturity and experience will help the young man but a manager needs to anticipate and react. I do feel bad because we brought friends whom had never been to Kona before. I do not think they will return.
I will return but it will take a little time. This was very uncharacteristic based on prior visits but it did make for a very uncomfortable evening
The young staff need to spend more time looking and being busy. maybe a more experienced management team would have helped.
Restaurant was very noisy making it difficult to have a conversation. On the plus side the flank steak I ordered was quite good. Someone else ordered the jambalaya and it was extremely hot. Sort of a strange mix of foods for a restaurant I think of as mainly a sushi restaurant.
I have not been to this particular Kona Grill before. It's physical set up was different. Clean. But more like an open bar. My wife and I went for an anniversary dinner. Noise level was fine as we were away from bar. However, as soon as the restaurant portion begin to fill, and especially with the foursome seated behind us, it was too noisy. The group behind us had spent too much time in the bar. They were vulgar, loud, and management did nothing to help lower the volume. As for the food, my sushi was great. My salmon was excellent. My wife's pasta entree and the potstickers were a little bland.
