Dinner out with out of town colleagues; great fresh sushi! Grace our waitress was lively and very accommodating to our requirements! This KC Plaza location is great and great area to take out of town guests.
My friend and I️ had a wonderful experience. I️ worked at Kona ages ago, and it's nice to see some of the old staples on the menu and some of the new menu items sprinkled in! Thanks for a great evening!
There was a large party by us that was loud and eventually ended up getting in a fight causing a disruptive environment. I understand the circumstances but it was not an enjoyable meal. Due to the disruption of this large party our server was preoccupied with deescalating the situation and our food came out very slow and took us 15 mins after getting our food to get utensils. Our drinks were never refilled and I did not end up getting the poke bowl that was ordered. I may start to question coming back.
Our visit to Kona Grill took place on Mother’s Day. Our reservation was made for later in the evening. After browsing the menu and coming to a decision on what our table wanted, during our attempt to order we were told that several things we wanted we’re not available.
While we were waiting for our dinner, we were then asked if anyone would like a last call for libations, once again after ordering, the waiter returns only to say that they cannot produce the order.
As the table of six receives our plates, we learn that one of the plates was not made and that they would not be making the meal due to the time… Leaving one person at the table without food. Our experience was unacceptable!
Kona clearly was not prepared to meet the demands of the holiday. Our experience was the result of poor preparation and a lack of staff communication and management skills.
We would like to thank our waiter. He was professional, energetic, respectful and pleasant.
Overall, my experience was very good. Our waitress was very good. It seemed like maybe they were a little short staffed as it took a while for my food to come out. My son's plate was brought out super early. He ate, I watched and when my plate came out, I ate and he watched. But, everything was delicious and a pleasant experience. I would definitely go back there again! Thanks Kona Grill!
I know that Kona Grill is much better then the experience we had. I'm guessing it is do to being understaffed from COVID. They served my meal 10 minutes before my husband. His food order was wrong. The food quality was average. If this was my first visit I definitely would not go back.
Service was excellent
Food was amazing
Went on Mother's Day in the evening-my husband had to reorder his food 3 times because they were out:( AND took FOREVER to get our food.
Mother’s Day, the place was packed, service handled everyone great, food was perfect, pricey but good.
Please give the people working at this restaurant "grace" and probably other restaurants you may be starting to go into as well. Restaurants are OBVIOUSLY understaffed due to the current employment situation in the US. Those who are not set up for "drive through" have had a rough last year. Our server was wonderful. He helped guide us through the menu and was running around the entire time trying to do the best he could. The food was good, the drinks were good. This is a difficult time for restaurants and everyone at this place was working as hard as they could.
Went here for Mother's day and it was completely ruined due to poor service. To start with we had forgotten our masks and was told that wouldn't seat us without masks and no they didn't have masks. Mined you we were parked a half mile away. Then noticed a gentleman working next to hostess desk without a mask so I pointed out and asked why he wasn't required to where mask and she said he was eating.... no food by him as he was there to work not eat. We asked to speak to the manager and he came up and listened to what had took place and said it was a good coaching point. He had a quick chat with her and then went to seat us.
We then waited for 25 minutes with no waitress, finally the same manager came by and explained to him that no one had waited on us for the 25 minutes we had been seated. He said that they hadn't done a very good job so far which i agreed. He then went and found a waiter for us. We finally get our food 1.5 hours after arriving and 1 of parties food don't come out with everything else, and waited another 15 minutes for our waiter to come back by. Checked out and left and didn't see that waiter had put another parties food on my bill to the tune of a extra $30.
Absolutely a horrible trip to Kona Grill. The 2-3 times we have there the service has been bad!!
The worst service and experience EVER! Completely overwhelmed and staffed with incompetence. The manager was very nice and tried his best but his staff was pathetic. Used to be our favorite restaurant. Cant imagine going back anytime soon.
Food horrible had to send back, out of entrees and food cold and steak undercooked, sides looked like they were on the plate for two days, rice and mashed potatoes were crusty, fish was fishy, and steak raw. And to top it off, waitress was rude and avoided us. I had hip surgery and waited for this outing for a week. It was Mother’s Day. The manager that I asked for, did take care of one of the meals. But irritated because I had to ask for a manager. I won’t be going back. This sucked so disappointed!!!!!
Made a reservation for Mother's Day and wasn't seated until almost an hour past our reservation time. And that was with understanding we would only be able to order drinks once seated. Our server, Katie, was quite good but you could tell was over-extended. The bar couldn't make our first drinks ordered because they were out of some ingredients. Same happened when we ordered food. The kitchen was very backed up so we ordered sushi so we wouldn't have to wait as long. All in all, underwhelming.
This was the wrong choice for Mother’s Day. Kona Grill was not on their game with time management today. We really tried to be relaxed about the timeline, but it made it difficult with the poor service we received. The staff seemed so stressed and overwhelmed, just in survival mode, that they really never apologized at all for the 50 minutes we stood past our reservation time to be seated. They didn’t mind bluntly asking guests to MOVE out their way or further away from the hostess stand/door as real estate to park our bodies increasingly diminished. Nobody seemed to bother that we waited well over 70 minutes from ordering to food delivery for 4 lunch meals. It was a weird Kona experience. Glad I’m a chill person and the food was decent but it wasn’t wait 2 hours good. Oh, and all those sad faces of waiting people as we left. Oh my goodness. Happy Mother’s Day!
I've come to love Kona Grill over the years and have visited the Kansas City location since 2006. I've even enjoyed the Honolulu location too. I love the sushi and atmosphere. Yesterday, was a huge miss in the way of brunch. From the start, while our server was on top of things from the start and gave impeccable service despite a very slow and confused kitchen and managing staff. We eventually got our food an hour after ordering (not after being seated). We received a nice discount, after we rejected the original offer my management of $10 off. While we will be back to Kona, this wasn't a great time on a very public holiday.
Food was ok, i got the KC strip. I asked for Medium Rare it was a true Medium and was served on a Plank not a plate. the Juice from the steak ran all over the plank and on my wives white pants as we had to pass it to my spot. I get the visual but not a good idea.
Great food and environment
Our reservation was at 1:00 p.m. on a Sunday. Place was busy, but not packed...so it was weird when it took 20 minutes to even be acknowledged by a server. That kind of set the tone for the entire lunch. If we asked for something, it took a long time to get...and the server kept telling us that it's because the kitchen was backed up, but for basic things like soda, wine, silverware, etc. the kitchen has nothing to do with that.
The food was just okay. I don't know if it's because the kitchen was in a rush to get stuff out, but the attention to detail seemed to go out the window. For instance, the edamame was salted on top but not throughout like it normally is. The macadamia nut French toast came without macadamia nuts. The burger was way overcooked.
The poor service combined with the lackluster food added up to a sub-par experience. We really used to like Kona, but it's like they don't have it together anymore. They seem disorganized, understaffed, and not at the level they used to be at when it comes to food prep. Maybe they were having an off day...idk.
Due to the host’s lack of care or concern about the cleanliness of the restaurant we decided not to take the chance on eating there. We were shown to our table which had noticeable food all over it, he moved us to the table behind which again had food on it. The host then took us to a table on the other side of the restaurant, again there was noticeable food on the table. After leading us to the table in front of that one he said “What about this one?”, when yet again there was noticeable food on the table. After 1 more table with food on it we decided that if the restaurant wasn’t concerned about the cleanliness the customers could see then who knows what the kitchen looked like. Not once was there an offer made to clean the tables nor was there an apology offered or even an explanation made such as “We were slammed and everyone left at once so we are getting caught up.” The lack of interest in customer service was disappointing for such a well known establishment.
Everything was perfect we had zero complaints ....
Waiter had too many tables to wait. He took our order and never came back until he brought the bill at which time he took the time to tell us how busy he was and hoped we understood and would still leave a tip. The food was excellent but the service was awful
The food was good, but the service was weird. One side arrived before my main dish and another arrived after I was finished. It seemed the kitchen was overwhelmed by a Saturday night and couldn't fulfill orders correctly.
Went in for a nice Sushi dinner and Kona delivered, again.
Great Service! Great Food! Great Scene! A little expensive but worth it!
The calamari was over seasoned. Otherwise, everything else was great.
Early Mother’s Day dinner. Service was extremely slow and had to actually remind the server that we needed to get our drinks from the bar. Food was amazing and the atmosphere was pleasant.
Great food waitress was a little busy and not checking in but still ok.
This is a place to go if you are into very loud techno music. The furniture and carpet etc look very worn. It has been years since I have been there and it has gone down hill.
Food and service by Billie was excellent!
Weekend away in KC and waited too long to make reservations at any place we don’t have at home, so we booked at Kona. Started out great, seated on time, had my espresso martini, but tonic in all my husbands gin and tonics was flat, even though he brought it to the waitress’s attention after she brought the 1st one (an issue with the tank), as was the soda in my vodka and soda. Calamari had great flavor but was tough. Husband ordered the wave roll, which was fine, I ordered the chicken stir fry. There was so much chili paste in it that I literally choked on my first bite. Tried to continue to eat it because I was starving and our waitress was swamped and didn’t come back, but way too spicy- just not edible. Manager did apologize, take off stir fry (offered to remake it), but did nothing about drinks. Overall, not a great experience
Quick service, waitress was very friendly. Food and drinks were as advertised. Not a super fan of that type of food but enjoyed my visit. I would go back.
Great experience! Bartender was great food was amazing!
It took 18 minutes for someone to greet us once we got to our table. Two other tables that sat after us were greeted before us. The rest of the experience went fairly well. Food was great. Atmosphere was good. Server stayed on top of most everything. Had to request a water refill twice. Would go back.
It is always a great time @ Kona Grill. The staff is amazing and the food is always awesome. My friends and I come often and are never disappointed.
Very nice food came quick server was very polite and informative had a great date night!
The sea bass was excellent. The server was very attentive and helpful in recommending dessert. The overhead music was a little loud.
This was to celebrate my sons bday. Put that on the original reservation and it wasn’t anything special. First after being seated waited for 5 min for someone to come get our drink order. Food was great. Delicious as usual. We sat around a lot with no food on our table. Orders were messed up slightly and my husbands side of veges never came out (we weren’t charged though) but also didn’t ask about them because everything was slow as it was. We will come back just no time soon. For a birthday dinner I was disappointed.
What late at night for reverse happy hour on Saturday. They had DJ. Great music. Service was great wonderful waitress
