Kona Grill - Houston Ratings and Reviews
This was my first visit to Kona Grill. I ordered the Cuban sandwich with sweet potato fries. I really liked the sauce included with my sandwich (not sure of the name but it had black sesame seeds in it). I definitely would recommend eating here and plan to visit again soon.
First time there. Had heard it was very good so was disappointed because while it was not bad, it was nothing great. Restaurant was not very busy but service was spotty and not very attentive. The Pad Thai was just o.k., have had much better. The sea bas was good and done very nicely but the rest of the dish, the asparagus and fried rice left a lot to be desired. Because it was not very busy, the manager gave us tomato basil soup on the house. Again, it was o.k. But not great, a bit too creamy. All in all, it wasn't bad but certainly nothing to rave about or recommend..
I spent the evening with my two good friends while we ate sushi rolls (the voodoo is extra spicy but goes great when cut with the fresh ginger) and I had the jambalaya! The crawfish addition was surprising and delicious with them and the server checked on us often without imposing. I'll probably go again!
This experience was very poor... usually I enjoy the Kona Grill. We waited 45 minutes before we received our food and had to ask for water refills in that time. We also let them know we were celebrating a birthday, but it went unnoticed except for the hostess, who said happy birthday on our way in. The manager on duty came to apologize after we complained that we had been waiting 45 minutes and still had no food, but there was no other attempt to accommodate the long wait.
I have been to Kona Grill before and I am always happy with the food. I think the sushi rolls are fresh and flavorful! However, the service I always find slow. I always order sushi and the sushi takes longer to prepare here than any other sushi place I have been. Overall the flavor is great and if I have a long time to spare, I am happy to return and have the Picasso roll.
Kona Grill is definitely a beautiful surprise. My girlfriend loves Kona Grill, so I made the reservation :) I had no idea that Westheimer Road had lights wrapped beautifully around the trees that glisten at night; the view was exceptional from the patio. Our server, Darrell, welcomed us with a smile, made us laugh throughout the evening, which made the night even better. We ordered margaritas and sake bombs, pepperoni flatbread, chicken satay, the bama roll (amazing) and a caesar salad. This was the perfect spot for late night Happy Hour and tapas in a prime location in the Galleria. I would highly recommend Kona Grill for date night - make sure you sit on the patio if you can :) the view is lovely.
Kona Grill has always been a pleasant place, but I have never a particular fan of their food until this visit, probably because I never had their lemon-garlic shrimp penne pasta. The occasion was friends getting together for the first time in several years with one former colleague now in Europe in town for a few days. We spent 3 hours catching up but were never rushed and received just the right amount of attention from the server, checking in with us just to enough to see if we needed anything. All in all, a really enjoyable experience.
Food was great as usual but service was terrible. Server took forever to greet us and was barely around when we need things. He rarely filled our water glasses and finding him to pay was excruciating. Once he did pick up my card he was gone for like 7 minutes with it. Either he is slower than I thought or I'm going to have to watch my statement for a while. Just ridiculous.
It was 8PM on a Sunday. Kona had 10-20% of the tables going and was full of employees and cooks. Some of the tables were taken by employees. My daughter was just diagnosed with lymphoma. We were in Houston for MD Anderson. She was not very hungry. She ordered the cheese fondue for an appetizer, then asked if she could order the child's turkey club. It was the only thing that sounded good to her. Our server told her no. "Not unless you are under 13." He wasn't kidding. I asked if they had an adult turkey club. He said no. She ordered something else and ate very little. Our food took forever for a near empty restaurant. Our server was slow about everything. I eat at the Kona in Plano all the time. I've never had a bad experience. Kona at the Galleria was a poor dining experience.
We were seated promptly ad greeted in a friendly manner but our server was less than attentive and seemed to disappear for long periods of time. Several times I had to ask for a refill on my water and other beverages. It took him a really long time to come back to the table after he brought the first round of beverages to take our dinner order. But fortunately, the food did not take long to come out and everyone's order was correct. If we had a different server, one that seemed like he enjoyed his job, we may have had an overall better experience.
Bottom line - 'too cool for school' waiter instead of writing down orders attempted to commit them to memory, when running through re-cap with patrons prior to placing, he was advised that he was totally wrong on one order (glazed salmon vs. shrimp salad). Asked by patron if he wanted to write it down "oh, no - I got it"
Food order came out. Wrong order for different patron that required fried shrimp to be cooked while others went ahead and ate their entre while hot. Food delayed due to cooking meant that patron basically watched everyone else eat, and then ate while everyone else watched her.
No apology from waiter, no consideration given for rectification.
Bad service is the doom of any service establishment.
Also, when making reservation request online, specifically requested a quiet table for 4 for business lunch conversation. Screaming children playing on the mall escalator blew that request as we were seated in the middle of the restaurant in a high traffic area, that was also requested not to be in, in the online reservation request.
2 strikes in one dining experience. 3 and you would have been out. Probably won't be on top of list for future business dining.
It took the waiter ten minutes to bring my draft Bud Light. The place wasn't even crowded. When it came to the check, I gave him my debit card. He disappeared for another ten minutes with it, keeping me waiting. Sushi there tastes good, but it is expensive if considered the size of the orders. I had definitely been in better places.
