Kona Grill - Richmond Ratings and Reviews
After moving to VA from TX, I was disappointed to discover that the Turkey Burger was taken off the menu... I hope you bring it back (I opted for miso soup and avocado egg roll for appetizers along with the stir fried chicken/broccoli for the entre mea)! Overall, the experience was not bad; but I experienced an upset stomach later that evening through the next morning...
Have to give them big kudos, we booked for eight, we had to change when we arrived to 15 and they got us on the patio (more casual) where we wanted to be despite that not usually being bookable. We had people arriving at different times too over a two hour period and yet the server took it all in his stride. Happy hour deals are excellent, food is good, Service very good.
This is usually one of my favorites for sushi and seafood but they were not on top of their game this night. The sushi was just OK, not creative or even very tasty. And the sea bass as no better . than average. Very disappointing as I had built up this place as great to my business friends. I will have to reconsider this as a business dinner option.
Great choice for something different! The drinks were fun and good, and the service was excellent. The menu was extensive, made for a hard time deciding. My husband and I ended up sharing a variety of appetizers for our meal and were extremely pleased with them all! One words of caution, however....the desserts are huge! We couldn't agree on dessert, so we both had to leave some behind.
Everything would have had five stars because the food was delicious and the waiter was helpful and tried very hard. However our main course came out a little too soon as we were still eating our appetizers. We would certainly go back again with a warning to the waiter to wait to put in the orders further apart.
We were very disappointed at our last visit. Kona Grill had been one of our "go-to" restaurants due to the quality of food and service. Though we had not been there recently, trying out some of the new venues in Short Pump, we were surprised to see the restaurant so empty on a Saturday night. By the end of our dinner we understood why. We got our first clue as to the decline of the restaurant when we were handed a stained menu. Further clues came when our salads arrived and despite asking that the cucumbers be held out of my salad, I spent the next few minutes picking them out before I could eat the salad. Then when my fish came, I was shocked to see that one side had stay in the frying pan far too long. And even as we were leaving, we were further disappointed to see that their complimentary Jolly Ranchers had been removed, most likely as a cost-cutting measure. We are sadden to see the quality of a once very good restaurant so low, but it appears that Kona Grill is not measuring up to the strong competition in the area.
Unfortunately, I left felling just 'meh'. But take it with a grain of salt, I tend to have higher expectations than most. Service was overall just ok - hostess was very polite, helpful and sweet; server was nice and talkative but didn't seem to have as much 'service' experience as I would expect for the price point. Food was ok, but I had expectations to be much more dazzled than, "oh...this is good...I guess" so it left me 'meh' as I stated above. I probably should have gone with a menu "favorite" instead of venturing off to ones that are "coming off the menu soon". Shame on me.
Food was excellent, but I was disappointed that items listed on the on-line menu were not available and not listed on the menu in the restaurant. Perhaps the item I was interested in had been recently discontinued, but our waitress had no idea what I was referring to.
I was happy to bring my husband & father in law here on Father's day because I'd had such a great birthday dinner at Kona. This experience was very different. The hostess was great. Then a man I'm assuming was the manager came over and spoke to us. He told us one of two different servers were going to come help, but in the meantime he'd take our drink order. Fine. Drinks took a bit of time considering they were mostly water. He came Back-to take our order, I'm assuming to help out the actual server. We were not ready to order so he said he would return. Fast forward 20 minutes, and then a female server appeared. I think she had had been having a bad day or something, because she was not pleasant and we had to ask for things multiple times. I understand people having a bad day now and then be said not let it affect your work like that. All this said, I will chalk it up to a bad day for people, because, as I mentioned, I had an earlier really good experience. I will probably come back but be seated in a different section.
We always enjoy the food. This time, we brought a friend. Unfortunately, there must have been something wrong with the air conditioning. It was hot. The waiter apologized, but it didn't make it any cooler. We have had some hot weather this week of June 12, so we will return, but I am sure I will be asked to call first to ensure the a/c is working properly. It is difficult to enjoy a meal when the sweat is running down your face.....
the salads were very good, nonetheless!
I have been to Kona Grill several times. The foods are always good and service is also good ( a little bit slow but considering how busy they are, it's okay). Just small problem this time with our seating, there are water drop from ceiling. it impacted us and the table next to us. Overall our dining experience is still pretty good.
Food was excellent and waiter was really helpful. The only major downside was the wait. We had reservations at 1 pm, the place was not super crowded, but we still waited a good 5 minutes before being brought to our table. Then after being seated, we waited another 10 minutes before anyone came to out table to take our drink orders. Then after taking our food orders, it was at least another 20 minutes before getting our appetizers. This would have been a 5 star experience had it not been for that...well, and maybe the momentary (maybe 2 or 3 minutes) when someone decided to turn on or up the music and it was way too loud and hard to hear normal table conversation.
This was a business dinner for 8 and we were promptly seated and orders taken. We had several appetizers and all wee very good and large portions. We also had a variety of dining choices including two for sushi. The sushi was outstanding. I think it's the best sushi in the Richmond Metro area.
The food is overpriced for what it is especially for a chain. Regular food we honestly make at home (except sushi) nothing real great. Liked our waitress this time the last one was real stuck up and snoody and was making Kona into something it's not. It's just an alright place to get together with friends.
I took my husband to this restaurant for his birthday. We had previously (the week prior) signed up for the rewards program; however, he never received his complimentary coupon/certificate. The waitress was excellent; however, the manager was unable to provide any sort of special treat for my husband's day (saying we could wait for the certificate to appear and to come back another day), and that was extremely disappointing. I would think that with me spending over $100 during a quiet Monday afternoon, something could have been done to make us happy during our first time there and to ensure we would return again. Additionally, there is an odd rule that, even during happy hour, the specials can only be obtained while sitting in the bar area. This restriction ended up causing us quite a bit more money, as we were sitting in the dining area and could not receive the lowered drink and food rates. While the waitress' service and the food were both awesome, I am not quite sure we will be returning, as it did not seem as though the management cared too much about us celebrating a special event, and we also don't understand why one's seat would determine the value of food/drink items.
It was a very nice atmosphere to unwind and enjoy a delicious meal..we got there late about 10pm...their Happy Hour had begin for the evening...drinks & appetizers at a discounted rate...so we tried the Trios Tacos, Kona's Calamari to start...the tacos were plated beautifully and packed lots of flavor...the Calamari was light and perfectly fried...my Hunny ordered the Rockfish & O had the Asian Chilli Salmon...both were cooked perfectly...the taste was fresh and flavored very well. Our waitress was extremely friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and attentive, generous with refills, we never had to hunt her down for one! We had a delightful time and will continue to visit.
