Kona Grill - Carmel Ratings and Reviews
Food and presentation are great! Very good service. I never had an empty drink glass.
Food is delivered in proper order and timing was perfect. Great atmosphere. Very nice menu variety. Nice location. Price is a bit "upscale", but it is reflected in the quality of food. If you are on a tight budget, this is still a good "special occasion" place. If your budget is not so limited, then this should be on your "regular visit" list. In any case, you won't get better quality at any price.
Sorry to say that my recent dinner with friends was less than optimal and not nearly as good as in the past. The noise level was deafening, making conversation among friends very difficult. I realize that the restaurant can't control the clientele, but having a table with 6 shrieking toddlers (literally shrieking!) and only 3 adults seated in the middle of the restaurant made it unpleasant for everyone nearby. I'm a parent, and I would never have taken this kind of group to an "adult" restaurant at the dinner hour - maybe for lunch and seated far in the rear.
Our server was a trainee, friendly, and did his best, but he rushed us to place our orders, was unfamiliar with the menu, took up the barely-finished plates, and brought the check so we didn't have time to linger and chat with our guests from Phoenix for even a little while. In and out in less than an hour! We understand the need to turn the tables relatively quickly, but this was not at all welcoming.
Three friends enjoyed the salmon sliders although mentioned that they should have been alerted that these are much larger than typical sliders, so they each had to take one home. The house salad was terrific - crisp veggies, lots of blue cheese, and very yummy. The macadamia nut chicken had NO macadamia nuts - 2 overcooked, very chewy chicken breasts with a teaspoon of a bland sauce, whole carrots with no seasoning, and smashed potatoes that tasted reheated. The entire plate arrived barely warm. A local well-known cafeteria serves much better food than this for half the price!
Tonight's experience was very disappointing, but ordinarily my friends and I really like Kona Grill, so we'll return hoping this was just an "off" night.
Wednesday night - very busy.
At first service was very slow, 30 minutes until we received our drinks, or could place an order.
Run out of wine classes, received small juice glasses
Once we were served, all was good, in all we enjoyed our evening. Food excellent
We went out to Kona tonight to try the sushi with kids. I hate to say it but we tried three different sushi rolls and none of them really impressed us...they were flavorless and the bites were HUGE so its as hard to even pick them up with chopsticks. The kids did like their kids meals which had plenty of food. We also tried the lettuce wraps and they were okay and the gouda dip..but it was nothing to write home about. If you're looking for sushi I would look elsewhere.
Our server was good, but our 2nd table's service was horrible. We sat down at the same time, we ate and were paying bill before 2nd table even got food....at this point it had been an hour a a half since we were seated. Spoke to manager, he blamed it on our party because we asked waitress to come back twice; first time because they needed a few more minutes to decide & 2nd time because someone was in the restroom. Possible delay in ordering 15-20 minutes....they still should not have had to wait over an hour for food. Poor customer service. We frequent Kona often so this was a huge disappointment from the mgmt.
The food is good, my Salmon was great. Service is good and food was served in a timely manner. Iced Tea needed more ice but that's most places. For the dollars spent it was good and has been consistently good. Dollars spent for dinner value, I rank as good not excellent.
My husband and boys love Kona Grill for their sushi. I don't eat sushi, so I am happy to try different things on the menu. We typically start with the edamame and artichoke rolls. The artichoke appetizer wasn't as good as usual this time, but it was still good. My mother in law had the salmon and loved it and I tried a grouper special with white rice and brussels sprouts with bacon. It was very good! I know we'll be back, as my boys can't get enough of the sushi!
We had reservations for a 5:30 pm Friday evening meal with friends. All the waitstaff we encountered were very attentive. When we entered, the restaurant was about half-full indoors, and the sound level was moderate, permitting easy conversation across the table. As we dined during the next hour and the dining area filled toward capacity, and the sound level became 'energetic', but conversation was still possible. The food was delicious!
Good meal and decent service but we fought gnats the entire meal. Waitress said the doors were open causing it but I've never fought that many gnats in a restaurant booth that far from the open air part of the restaurant. I've eaten there several times and never had that issue before.
We got a table quickly food was delicious the ambience was perfect. The waitress forgot my tea, but I also forgot, until the end... and she gave me a tea to go, that was the only bad thing, we weren't charged for any tea. I will definitely come back the sushi was delicious
Our children (ages 16 and 18) picked this as a family dinner outing. I ordered a margarita, which tasted like flavored water with no alcohol at all (and it cost $7). My tacos were good, but the taco itself was awful. My son, who eats out a lot and is not picky about restaurant food, had potstickers, which he proclaimed as the worst food he's had in a long time. My husband and daughter thought their food was mediocre, too. The waitress and staff were great. We will not return because the food was below par.
We ordered an appetizer with our drink order. When the drinks arrived the waitress asked if we wanted an appetizer. Once again, we ordered an appetizer and requested that it come to the table before our meals which were then ordered. Sure enough our meals showed to the table and no appetizer was with it. We then asked for the appetizer to come with it. It was promptly brought out. The appetizer was cold and was apparent that it was forgotten about.
We also each had a water and my girlfriend had finished hers. The waitress asked if we would like more and we replied, "yes". Some time later she returns to the table beside us with a water pitcher and fills the waters at that table and then proceeds to our table to ask if we wanted any dessert and never filled her water. At this point we asked for the check.
The food was delicious and we enjoyed sitting in the bar area with the windows open. We will be back and hope that this isn't a normal occurrence.
