Kon Asian Bistro - Portland, ME Ratings and Reviews
Was very disappointed with our dining experience in the hibachi area. The waitress was inattentive and the hibachi chef was not interactive at all. Was expecting a better experience as this was a 40th birthday dinner for a friend(the restaurant was advised of this 30 days in advance when the reservation was made). The area we were seated at was so cold, it was like the heat was not on in the restaurant at all. Food was good, but overpriced. Overall very disappointing experience. Would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.
I went to Kon with a group of friends to celebrate my birthday and we were all vastly disappointed with the service. When I made the reservation, I was told that if my party (of 6) and I did not arrive by our 7 PM reservation time, they could not guarantee we would get the Hibachi table we requested. That is understandable, as I worked in food service and know that there are other people waiting and that essentially for Hibachi, they cannot just hold a table if the party is late. We showed up right at 7 PM and were seated within 10 minutes of waiting, which was fine as we were all excited to celebrate.
The largest issue came with the fact that while we were seated at 7:10, we did not have anyone come over the start the Hibachi grill until 8:15 PM. That is completely unacceptable that we would have to wait an hour for the 'show' to begin, after being told we needed to arrive promptly at our reservation time. We got our drinks around 7:30ish, and then just sat there, waiting for the Hibachi waiter to come to our table. We even tried to flag a couple waitresses down and ask if we had been forgotten about, and they said they would look into sending someone over. Furthermore, my friends requested that I get a birthday celebration, as they normally do here -- there were about 3 other birthdays in the entire restaurant, and they all got the Kon-themed celebration except for me. I'm not sure why, and we waited for it, but it never happened. To say this was a disappointing birthday dinner would be an understatement, and I would think twice before spending my money here again.
Sashimi was excellent! The ambience was very nice it had a club feel to it. There was a large Buddha in the middle with the rock garden. We were one of two tables there at lunchtime and one other table came in while we were there.Easy access off the highway. The restaurant was a great quick find on OpenTable.
The presentation was fun but not outstanding. The food was OK but not great. The prices were sky high. Our family dinner cost us $185 which is outrageous for Portland, Maine.
Sadly, we experienced phenomenal hibachi while in Mexico this spring and couldn't help but compare...and there is no comparison. Their chefs are flamboyant and put on quite a show of cooking style. The chef we had seemed to be on autopilot, relying exclusively on adult and "baby" sake samples to wow us. Gimmicky.
We left with a lot less money and more than enough of this place.
We had a 6pm hibachi reservation for 4 adults and a toddler. We really enjoyed the food and drinks (sushi for me, hibachi for the rest of my family). The only down side was a long wait for our hibachi chef to arrive and get our meals going. Normally I probably would have just ordered an extra cocktail and an appetizer and not given it another thought, but with a young toddler, a long wait is a LONG wait!
They "cram" too many people into a table. For the $$$, customers need to have room to relax, enjoy a cocktail, conversation with family, without 9-10 people crammed into a space for 8... or 6, ideally! We have been going for years, but my last 2 experiences will cause me to think twice before we go again.
We had a great time, Kon's has enlarged the hibatchi side of the restaurant and it has plenty of room and over all open feeling. Once your chef starts his "show" you don't see or hear any of the other tables. The food, though you think there is not enough, turns our at the end of the meal, you are full. Food is tasty and made to order.
Well rounded meal and fun place to bring friends
I appreciated the hostess was very accomdating and kind. I had to call to mention that we would be late and they assured us that it wouldn't be a problem , which I appreciated. Our server greeted us very promptly. We received our drinks right away. The hibachi chef was entertaining and fun. I appreciate that Kon has lunch portions for hibachi! I like the smaller portions and price. Overall it was a very nice experience. Thank you
The food was delicious and the person who prepared the Hibachi was very skilled. I was better prepared for the banter with the chef but I find it borders on disruptive (I was with a group), rude and often sexist...this time the chef was a bit more shy and so we couldn't really hear what he was saying which is a good thing. I wish we would be asked if we want just the show without the banter and the peeing boy.... the answer would have been no.
The presentation at the hibachi was fun and lively. The hibachi food...okay. I ordered calamari; the largest rings I've ever seen served at a restaurant and quite tough. My son ordered scallops and salmon. My meal was good, but much of it tasted the same, if not over-sauced. I would go again and try something different, and order from the menu. My granddaughters enjoyed the sushi and shared hibachi foods. A little polish on the recipes would be great, but overall, it was a fun evening.
One of my favored local spots. There are a few setting choices; the cool bar area for friendly conversation, the main dining area for date night, or the hibachi for a special occasion. The sushi is great, the drinks are well made. The hibachi is great although last time it was a little too salty. If you have an issue with salt, I'd call to inquire about options. The atmosphere is classy, although I've seen all attire. We always get a reservation, especially for the hibachi.
Fun place for a large group. Very interactive at the Hibachi makes dining more exciting. Kids and adults love it. Food is good, wait staff are attentive and chefs are comical and skilled! It is worth the slightly higher price for the whole dining experience....
They have two areas for seating. One area is for casual dining and the other for group seating at the hibachi with chef interaction. We went to the group area and you have to be open to the table crowd. Typically birthdays, but if you like to laugh and are open to the crowd it is fun.
Very happy that we had reservations! Went the night before Valentine's Day with our 2 year old to avoid long waits and toddler meltdown! Still had to wait about 20 minutes past our reservation time until we were seated, but they were busy and had quite a few groups that were unable to get a table. Food was amazing! All very fresh and cooked perfectly. If you've been to one hibachi grill, you've been to them all. They usually have the same basic menu. Was impressed to see salmon as an option for an entree. I ordered salmon and filet mignon, husband ordered chicken and scallops, and our daughter ordered chicken. Also started with sushi, which was very good. The roll seemed small to me as there were only 6 pieces to split, but as an appetizer it was ok. Last, the chef was entertaining, if maybe a little too scripted/bored, made the experience tons of fun for our daughter.
The staff: polite, professional and fun. The decor/atmosphere: sophisticated and exotic. The food: 5 Star.
All and all, a great experience. I have recommended you to a half dozen people in the last day. You made this a GREAT birthday experience for me and my friends. They have all commented on what a great time they had. That hibachi chef, should get an award. The food was incredible. Served with style and humor, not soon forgotten. I could ask for nothing more.
The chef was very personable as we sat at the Hibachi, my mother and step-father really enjoyed the food as well as the experience. We went for my younger brother's birthday and we was extremely happy. Success overall. Definitely try the Boston Roll from the sushi bar, one of my favorites.
