Kokkari (pronounced “Ko-Kar-ee”) is a small fishing village located on the islands of Samos in the Aegean Sea, whose name is derived from the small onions that were once produced in the nearby fields. Its fertile soil and Mediterranean climate translated into an abundance of fresh produce as well as treasured seafood and game. Legend tells that Kokkari is the site where Orion, a mighty hunter and a young man of gigantic stature and great beauty, fell in love with the daughter of the king of Chios. For the love of her, Orion forged the island for wild game and seafood to prepare elaborate banquets in celebration of their love. Today, we hope you will enjoy your own celebration as you dine at Kokkari Estiatorio on food “fit for the Gods” prepared with an Aegean palate and the style of innovative California fare.

Come to Kokkari Estiatorio in the Financial District to feel like a big shot. Maybe even throw on a suit and tie. It's a Greek temple of lamb.

Ratings 7.5-8.0:These are restaurants that are reliable, tasty, and particularly good for whatever we have deemed them “Perfect For.” Hit up a 7.7 for Date Night with confidence, as long as you don’t need the restaurant to be the most interesting thing that happens that night.

Love going here, but this visit was a bit off. Waiter disappeared a lot and showed up at odd times. Forgot things like bringing back forks for the mail course and having the tail and head removed from the whole fish as was ordered by the guest. Noise level was louder than expected too. Four of us sat at a nice small round table, but we all had a hard time hearing the person across the table.

I have been here twice and each time the food blew my mind. The service is fantastic. The specials are always worth waiting to hear about. We had the Zucchini Cakes to start, my husband had the Lamb Shank, and I had the Rotisserie Special which was pork shoulder. Everything was delicious.

The best restaurant in San Francisco. No doubt. Original dishes. Quality ingredients. Very good wine list. Extremely attentive service. Cosy atmosphere. Truly deserves all the accolades.

I have been a frequent customer since Kokkari opened two decades ago. The staff never disappoints. The food is authentic, healthy and always delicious. The managers are on top of every little detail and very attentive to the needs of the patrons. I have entertained clients and politicians there and they have all raved about the food and service. On this last visit I took my sister and her husband to Kokkari (who are relocating to Edessa, Greece next month) and they were blown away by the authenticity of the food. Now mind you, my sister, a wonderful cook of Greek food (she cooked all the fund raising meals for St. Sophia Cathedral (Los Angeles) until recently, has received praise for the taste and quality of her food from movie stars and lay people alike who are members of the Greek Orthodox Church. But even she was blown away by the horyiatiki salad, the marides (fried smelts) the avyolemono soup, the horta (greens) and various other appetizers. She was so overwhelmed with the quality and volume of food that she just stuck to appetizers. Marcus and Frangidakis have had a winning formula since they opened. So much so, that some years ago they opened Evvia in downtown Palo Alto. A must visit if you like authentic Greek Food. Parking is never a challenge but can be daunting on rainy cold SF nights. However, the courteous and always available valet parking staff (evenings only) could not be more helpful to people with special driving needs.

Overall, I rate the food, the depth and authenticity of the menu and the service five stars. The ambiance is beyond reproach. You will never ever have a bad meal at Kokkari regardless of the reason for your visit.

This popular Greek restaurant was attractive, warm, cozy and friendly. The appetizers (octopus, calamari, taramosalata Tzatziki) were outstanding. We were somewhat disappointed with our waitress who advised us to go ahead and order the four appetizers even if we were planning on a main dish, because they were of small size. It turned out each appetizer was the size of a full meal, so this advice was not truthful. My wife's goat stew was excellent, but it came on a bed of rice, to which she is seriously allergic. We had sent a list of our food allergies with our OpenTable reservation, but nobody bothered to read it. That is a serious oversight. Perhaps worse of all, the special of the day, rotisserie lamb, a well-known Greek specialty, was poor at best: it came in small, 1-inch cubes, as if it had been removed from a kebab, and it was dry, chewy and had no taste. If a Greek restaurant can't prepare a delicious lamb dish, it should not be in business!

I hadn't eaten here in probably a dozen years and both my dining companion and I were sorely disappointed with the meal. Bread was served without olive oil - we didn't realize that was an option until we looked around and saw it on every other table. The octopus we were served had just half the quantity you see in the pictures above. The Greek salad everyone seems to rave about consisted of large chunks of tomatoes, large chunks of cucumbers, and three olives, with small scatterings of onions and feta in a forgettable dressing. The one dish we actually enjoyed was one we didn't order - we ordered the shrimp, but were served calamari instead.

I do not recommend Kokkari Estiatorio.

We always enjoy this excellent restaurant but it takes patience to get a reservation and even with one it is so fillled with happy eaters that you always must wait for your tabl. The food is beyond excellent and the portions are huge.

Kokkari is always fantastic - one of our all-time most favorites in SF. Ambiance, fabulous food and the best of service - can't be beat. Thank you, Mickie Lloyd in Sausalito, CA

Reservations and the people handling seating are extremely intolerable. Also I asked for a doggy bag for the remainder of my meal, I got my salad box open and my desert in the salad box?!?!?!?

Enjoyed a return visit to Konkani, and with one important exception, enjoyed a very good experience. This is a pricey but inventive Greek featured restaurant. We split several dishes, all of them wonderful, but one dish -- Greek salad -- was ordered but never delivered. The server acknowledged the mistake, but no effort was made to offer compensation for the mistake. A complimentary dessert would have been appropriate, but was not offered. They have a good wine list with numerous decent value choices.

Always a great place to enjoy wonderful Greek food. Nice bar scene and the staff is always professional and accommodating. Noise level can be quite high (not for quiet intimate dinner) but it is a fun location with delicious food and drinks.

We came for lunch on Wednesday at 1:55, a bit late, but were seated w/o any problem. The lunch crowd had died down. We had a very nice, quiet, I unhurried meal. The food was superb. I had patrole, pan fried with lots of olive oil & Greek spices. VERY flavorful. DELICIOUS. The lentil soup was also very good. People are eating at the bar. Service was excellent.

One of the best meals I've had in SF! Unlike most of the upscale restaurants in SF that are overpriced, trendy and designed for instagram, this spot has a more classic, traditional vibe. The food was amazing - super fresh, authentic and healthy - and the service was top-notch. HIGHLY recommend, especially for special occasions!

Gorgeous restaurant, but was not as impressed with the food. The service is terribly slow and not very private seating. Felt like people could probably overhear conversations. I enjoyed my chicken although the ratios were off (not enough sides) , very flavorful but my date ordered the whole fish and we were both unimpressed with the flavors. The Greek salad was cut in huge pieces and equivalent to a Greek salad from any random pizza joint.

Kokkari was fabulous! My friend and I split the greek salad which was very fresh and tasteful and then I had the octopus with the gigantes beans and she had the lamb riblets with the artichoke and eggplant skewer with yogurt sauce. All were very good!! Then for dessert we ordered baklava and the custard filled phyllo, which were also great! The atmosphere is very nice and it feels like you are transposed to someplace in Europe. The place is extremely busy so we did have to wait a little while for the waitress at times but the wait was well worth it!

I am a diaspora Greek that normally feels embarrassed by the quality of the food in greek restaurants.
This is not the case with Kokkari. I had lunch with my young family on a holiday trip to SF. The menu was authentic with a contemporary twist. Everything was cooked to perfection. The service was excellent. Highly recommended.

Always fantastic. I love this place. The best is the half roast chicken (put it back on the lunch menu!). Lamb so tender and tasty. I always start with the greek salad. They don't over-oil, they have great bread, and wait staff the best. I eat here 4-5X mo. And the atmosphere is warm and full of energy.
