About Kokkari Estiatorio
Kokkari (pronounced “Ko-Kar-ee”) is a small fishing village located on the islands of Samos in the Aegean Sea, whose name is derived from the small onions that were once produced in the nearby fields. Its fertile soil and Mediterranean climate translated into an abundance of fresh produce as well as treasured seafood and game. Legend tells that Kokkari is the site where Orion, a mighty hunter and a young man of gigantic stature and great beauty, fell in love with the daughter of the king of Chios. For the love of her, Orion forged the island for wild game and seafood to prepare elaborate banquets in celebration of their love. Today, we hope you will enjoy your own celebration as you dine at Kokkari Estiatorio on food “fit for the Gods” prepared with an Aegean palate and the style of innovative California fare.

Kokkari Estiatorio Ratings and Reviews
Upon entering you are greeted with the aromatics of a wood burning stove. Then the warm glowing light fills the room with an inviting ambiance. The tables are arranged thoughtfully inviting conversation that you can actually hear. The menu offers a delicious variety of fish, poultry, lamb and beef and your table can share if you wish. The wine list offers both old and new world varietals and a wide range of price points. Our server was well prepared to describe all the dishes and specials and was helpful in suggesting combinations we could share. The name of the restaurant means “little onion”. There is nothing little here. The portions are generous and beautifully presented. A few of our favorites were the grilled octopus, stuffed calamari and the brussell sprouts. If you’re a fish lover, you can’t miss. Truly outstanding experience.
We loved Kokkari and will return! We chose 2 starters so that we could taste more of the menu. I had the octopus with olive oil and watercress - superb - cooked so well that it was tender. My dining companion had zucchini cakes which were crispy on the outside - also just right. She ordered the ribs which were delicious, and I could not pass by the smelts with skordalia. If there were nothing else on the menu, I would return for the smelts. Our waiter was friendly and efficient. When I requested a half glass of wine, he responded with, of course, no problem. That's good service.
To be honest, I was a little disappointed in the service. Our waiter had a terrific personality, and is clearly a professional (rare in the restaurant biz!), but when he saw that only half of us ordered drinks and we weren't ordering a bunch of appetizers, he seemed to lose interest in our table. Which didn't feel really hospitable. We were made to feel like second-tier diners because we don't drink and weren't going to be a $500 table.
My fish, however, was excellent!
Did not offer any rotisserie items that I was looking forward to the evening I was having a birthday celebration for my partner. I also noted on my Open Table reservation that we were celebrating my partner's birthday and the restaurant did not acknowlege this special occasion.
Fantastic place ...... one would often not think Greek is such a refined cuisine, but this is the best ~ very top-notch "Mediterranean". Great food, great service, great ambience. Just fantastic. And try the Greek wine too ..... the waiters will steer you in the right direction.
Excellent all around. Not much more I can say than that, Kokkari is back! It had been several years since my last visit here, but after a short time, I recalled why I fell in love with this fine establishment all those years ago. From the moment you walk in, the ambiance is still quite lively and energetic, there is certainly a warm positive buzz all over the restaurant, it's a place to see and be seen. The wine list is extensive and offers quite the selection of Mediterranean and Greek wines (highly recommend the Little Prince from Crete). But the best part of this dining experience? The food of course. I don't think Kokkari has a rival in all of San Francisco in terms of quality and authenticity. For starters, the pan fried Greek cheese, the prawns with feta butter, and the grilled Octopus are to die for. As a main course, the grilled lamb chops are the signature dish, and are absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. The dessert was the baklava and rizogalo, both super tasty and authentic. All around, the best Greek food I've had in SF, possibly the entire Bay Area. Thank you Kokkari, we definitely will be back soon! Yamas!
Our server was named Johnny. You may already have a favorite Kokkari server but if you do, trust me, ask for Johnny. Not only is he the most knowledgeable server I have ever had the pleasure of knowing, his attention to detail was superb, his understanding of the food immeasurable and the phrase "he's a cool dude" was made for him. It is unbelievable that he is a newcomer to Kokkari. It was a pleasure meeting Johnny.
The food was nothing short of spectacular. The arnisia plevrakia (grilled lamb riblets) fell off the bone and melted in my mouth. How the hell can a chef do that? The lentil and vegetable soup was unique and tasty, The grilled whole fish was to die for and the presentation artistic and the pan roasted halibut steak was cooked to perfection. This is one place where you can believe the hype. The folks doing the cooking at Kokkari can flat out "throw down."
To be fair I want to point out two SMALL items of concern
My latest visit to Kokkari was November 7, 2017..............................................
Went to this restaurant on the recommendations of a Greek friend. I have been to numerous other Greek restaurants and ALL of them are inferior to Kokkari Estiatorio.
When we got there, we ran into two other friends who also had a two person reservation. They had no problem sitting us together at a four person table. The service was excellent.
We ordered the fried cheese appetizer, an artichoke appetizer and the grilled calamari to start. Everyone of the dishes was excellent. I would not hesitate to order any of these dishes.
We ordered the rotisserie lamb, the Petrale sole and the lamb shank. All were excellent. My lamb was the best lamb I have ever had in my life. It was great. The sole was cooked to perfection. The lamb shank was delicious. Once again, everything was perfect.
We didn't have much room for dessert but did split a plate of Greek cookies. Guess what? They were really good.
I would not hesitate to come here again.
Went here with a friend to celebrate her birthday. It has been years since my last visit but just like the last time I was not disappointed. Our waiter did a wonderful job explaining the menu, answering questions and making recommendations that were spot on. He checked in on us on a regular basis to make sure we had everything we needed. The food was perfect and very flavorful. The ambiance was great as it was a nice evening and the large windows next to our table were open...it was as if we were sitting on a patio but we weren't. :-) They topped the evening with a birthday dessert with her name & happy birthday written on the plate. It was truly a special evening.
Probably the BEST Greek restaurant in the country, and we’re Greek, so that says a lot. Our meal was exceptional from beginning to end, and our waiter, Max, made our night. We shared the grilled octopus and the Greek salad to start, which were both so fresh and delicious. The lamb shank and spanakotiropita, which were our entrees, were both wonderful. We shared the loukoumades for dessert, which brought back wonderful memories of having this dessert at our local Greek Food Festival with our daughters. We’ll be back.
