About Kokkari Estiatorio
Kokkari (pronounced “Ko-Kar-ee”) is a small fishing village located on the islands of Samos in the Aegean Sea, whose name is derived from the small onions that were once produced in the nearby fields. Its fertile soil and Mediterranean climate translated into an abundance of fresh produce as well as treasured seafood and game. Legend tells that Kokkari is the site where Orion, a mighty hunter and a young man of gigantic stature and great beauty, fell in love with the daughter of the king of Chios. For the love of her, Orion forged the island for wild game and seafood to prepare elaborate banquets in celebration of their love. Today, we hope you will enjoy your own celebration as you dine at Kokkari Estiatorio on food “fit for the Gods” prepared with an Aegean palate and the style of innovative California fare.

Kokkari remains our favorite restaurant in San Francisco. The food and service are always good. It is well staffed; you never feel neglected here. This past time, Majid waited on our table and provided excellent service. We've held parties of 8 here, and we've come here for special occasions and never been disappointed. Try the zucchini cakes, and also the goat stew if you get a chance. It's pricey -- the whole branzino and the lamb chop entrees were $47 each. But we still love it for the occasional treat.
Kokkhari has scrumptious food and wonderful wait staff. I have never been so happy with a luxurious lunch that I will remember for some to come. Kokkhari went out of their way to make me feel special; we weren't rushed and the appetizers (lamb riblets, brussel sprouts, sea urchin) were delectable. For lunch, we chose the lamb chops - cooked the way we requested, and they melted in our mouth. The Greek coffee was superb as was the Ouzo. I highly recommend this restaurant, especially for special occasions. You will not be disappointed.
Lively ambiance. We had divine dishes - excellent whole fish with pan saute lemon sauce. Also "delicato" seasonal squash with pomegranate - wonderful recipes. Not a great place for intimate conversation, rather, a place for celebration. Service very attentive, not overbearing. Leaves you feeling joyous.
Great dinner! Food, ambience, service all first rate! Our server, Daria, was professional, very knowledgeable about the menu and personable. All wait staff we encountered were friendly, professional and timely for our needs. Our appetizers, zucchini cakes, octopus and pan fried Greek cheese, all excellent. Our mains, whole branzino (de-boned) and lamb chops exceeded our expectations, which based on friend's recommendations, were already very high. The host/owner dropping by our table toward the end of the meal was a thoughtful touch and appreciated. Restaurant seemed extremely busy in spite of our early, 5:15pm seating; busy, but not distracting. We will return at our first opportunity.
Food and ambiance was great, but our server truly elevated our dining experience. Her knowledge and honesty with the perfect amount of attention showed her professionalism and experience, which we greatly appreciated. Thank you for making my moms birthday so memorable.
An all-around good place to meet friends and sample good food, albeit, it is not
"authentic" Greek, but does have some Greek dishes. The food is mostly well-prepared
" Greek-inspired" and very tasty.
Restaurant has an "elegant - taverna" feel to it; very conducive to conversation
and enjoying your meal. I was surprised to learn that it is very popular, but that did
not affect the quality of the service and the food. I would make reservations as soon
as possible as reservations can be hard to get at the popular times.
I have been here a few times and have never been disappointed, whether it is with my wife, my work colleagues or clients. The atmosphere is frantic, noisy, busy and basically of people having a good time. While at times it appears chaotic with tables having up to three sittings and the bar jammed with diners, one has to take it as all part of the whole package. Love it. Great wine list and the lamb here is unbeatable.
Overall a superb dining experience! Service was impeccable and food delicious and perfectly prepared as always . Wine recommendation was great. Tab was a bit high but likely because we ordered too many of the yummy starters. Next time we will share entrees. Only complaint was that we were seated too close to nearby table and overheard conversation on political topic (yuck!)
I took my girlfriend here for her birthday and she loved the meal.
However, our waiter brought birthday desserts to the tables on our left and right, but not to us, despite my informing Kokkari of her birthday in the reservation. One table was clearly not expecting a birthday dessert, so it seemed like service was sloppy enough to give it to the wrong table and not realize the mistake.
The food was superb as always and our server, while busy managed our table as best he could. However, the hostess was quite rude and ruined an otherwise great lunch. She was dismissive and unapologetic when we followed up on our table after a 20 minute wait. We asked if we should just grab a drink at the bar first and her response with an eye roll was “whatever, if you want to but the table is being cleared”. Which is what she said when we first checked in. She could have handled it in so many different ways that didn’t warrant such attitude. My husband and I were taking my 71 year old dad. Maybe you could offer to have us sit and wait at the bar and have a drink while the table is set up for 20 mins. Again, the food is fanatastic but wow the hostess really ruined our impression and made us feel unwelcome.
Food was outstanding; we tried four different appetizers and it was hard not to devour everything. Service was attentive, but not intrusive. Sat in front room near bar, but back of restaurant was set up for larger parties, near kitchen and wood burning ovens. The atmosphere was fabulous.
Great place for Greek food, quality of food is high. You would not be disappointed by the lamb, it is always so good, certainly it is one of their specialties. Main room is a little small and crowded, you'll have other couples very close to you as your neighbors. Make reservations with enough time, always crowded.
