Kobe Japanese Steak House, Maui Ratings and Reviews
I have been coming to Maui for 25 years and amongst all the restaurants that have come and gone, kobe’s Lahaina has always been there. Very good quality food, good chefs, and just a good atmosphere. Yes it’s noisy but I wouldn’t expect less from a Japanese steakhouse where the entertainment and showmanship during the cooking is part of the experience.
This will be a spot I’ll continue to frequent every time I’m on Thebes island
We've been here a bunch of times before but this was seriously the worst dining experience ever. We didn't get a chef until an hour after our reservation time (we were all sitting at the table for one hour and no one came to check on us), the wrong chef started cooking for us, they undercooked our food (and argued when we simply asked for it to be cooked more), and got our bill wrong. Simply the worst experience ever. Unfortunately we don't plan on going back.
I love Kobe's!!! It is so much fun to come with a group of friends celebrating a birthday or special event. We had a party of 16 so it was perfect because that fits exactly 2 tables and we had 2 personal chefs. They cook right in front of you, giving you a great show and delicious food!!!! I always get the steak and shrimp with garlic fried rice. It comes with a soup and a huge portion of veggies all cooked in front of you! This is a fun place for groups!!!!
I'm surprised to see the negative reviews. We are 3/3 for great experiences here. 2 of our visits were with the whole family of 6-7. We came at 5:30 and got the early bird deal. The kids all had virgin drinks and the wife and I each had a cocktail. With a 20% tip we were out for about $250. On Maui that's an outstanding value for a full meal including a simple soup, shrimp and veggie appetizers, yummy entrees, and an entertaining show of preparing the food. We had no room for dessert!
They were really busy. The waitress was so busy that she didn't take the time to go over the 3 different parties orders. Our cook was confused. When we asked for help, she replied, "i'm too busy" and kept walking away. We haven't been in a while but this was just a big disappointment.
Service was awful. Our table had to get up to refill our own water glasses twice. Appetizer arrived after we were almost done with meal. Server never came back for a second drink order. We ate upstairs, which was so confined that cooks and wait staff had to squeeze behind us each time they needed to enter kitchen. Chef at table was not prepared and had to go back to retrieve items we had ordered several times. A local who frequents this restaurant told us it has gone downhill in the past few years. For the price, our experience was just not worth it.
Service was horrible, we had to ask for water two times, the 2nd time we had to get our own water. Our appetizer shrimp dynamite came when our main meal was done. The steamed rice for the meal was given after we we're finish eating. Not good at all, we go there 5 times a year for birthdays , we spent $229, this unexceptable. I really feel compensation is warranted.
I don’t like to leave negative reviews but this one is warranted. Reservation was at 7:30 PM. Arrived at 7:30. Didn’t get seated until 8:00. Our chef didn’t get to us until 8:40. My husband went to the bar to get a drink which was not crowded. The bar tender ignored him while he was taking to someone at the bar for at least 5 minutes that appeared to be another employee or friend hanging out. He looked at my husband several times and looked away. It was obvious he was trying not to wait in him and another guest. He continued to talk to the female guest until my husband said, “can I get a drink from you?” He then took his order. My husband gave a $20 bill for a $9.35 bill. The waiter gave him a $10 bill in change (giving himself his own tip). At that point my husband was so frustrated he just walked away and did not ask for the remaining change and did not leave additional tip. The bartender went beyond rude and was just disrespectful and no one should be treated this way. I probably should have told management about the bartender but we were there for a nice family night out on our vacation and didn’t want to dampen the evening. Wouldn’t recommend.
We were very disappointed with the sushi. It was the worst sushi we have ever tasted. The rice was terrible tasting; we’ve never had salmon sushi served with lemon and it was terrible. My son couldn’t eat his food because it was so bad. My husband could barely eat his and left a lot on his plate.
I had the chicken & shrimp dinner and it was good but the chef kept tapping his knives against the grill which made a very loud ringing sound that was unbearable. We won’t be back.
Had dinner at this restaurant and dined at the hibachi grill where the chef not only prepares your food but puts on a show. Totally enjoyed the others that were seated at our table. The chef made our experience enjoyable. Our meal was excellent. We were in and out quickly. Was told that this restaurant is in high demand so make your reservation (during peak season) early. I would also like to add that all of our dinner reservations were made through Open Table and for our two week vacation, we were seated in prime locations, except for me asking for outside dining at Fleetwood's on Front Street, not Open Tables fault.
We had reservations at 7:30pm and we were asked to wait in the “lounge”...basically a bar area that was dirty. Then we didn’t get seated at our table until 8:20. We had small children with us who were starving. The server was clearly slammed and struggled to get our drinks to us and stay on top of things, but that wasn’t a huge deal. We sat at the table for another 25 minutes before the cook actually arrived to cook our food. And it went from bad to worse. He dropped the vegetables for the fried rice AFTER the rice was already cooking and then didn’t push the rice off to the side or anything while he waited for more vegetable to arrived, so then the rice burned. And then everything else after that was burned...except the shrimp which was slightly undercooked. My guess, the cook was completely drunk/stoned. He couldn’t read what the server had printed for him. He threw shrimp at our two little boys without warning them at all and hit one in the face. He was yelling at the server. I want to believe that this restaurant normally has good service and good food, but it was terrible. Honestly, the only reason we didn’t walk out is because we had three little kids who were so hungry because we’d already waited an hour and a half before we got food. On top of all that, my niece has a soy allergy and we informed the cook. He didn’t pay close attention and so she had an allergic reaction.
The restaurant did comp a lot of our food, but didn’t comp it all because we ate some of it...because, again, we were starving after waiting 1.5 hours to get our food. If they wanted to do the right thing, they would have comped the entire meal because it was seriously such a terrible experience. Oh, there was one exception. The salmon sashimi wasn’t terrible.
We were not seated at our reservation time. It was clear they had more reservations than staff. Once we were seated it took 20 minutes for our order to be taken. No water until we asked. My friends sushi order was not entered. The final bills were wrong.
The chef was very nice.
Way understaffed restaurant. Very unfriendly hostess. Bartender wasn’t happy either. Service was terrible. My medium rare Kobe steak was medium well. Be careful of chef that can’t hang on to his utensils while performing as it landed on another woman. To top it off, there was someone else’s chicken dinner on our bill! We were very disappointed. Won’t be returning!
Kobe is always fun as you sit with other people and wqtch the amazing performqnce of the table chef. The food is always great, the wait staff and pleasant and efficient, and it is a fun way to fill up on a good tome with other diners. Despite hqvi g a reservation, we do always need to wait for q tqble. Especially when we are just a party of two and need six more people to start the dining service. We understand their need to keep us waiting, and it isnt usually very long. Just remember this when you go to the restaurant...it is hgnly jnlikely you will be seated right away.
Reservations for 7pm. Arrived at approximately 7:05. Was told to wait near the bar until our table was ready. Ended up getting seated at 7:50pm! Safe to say our 3 year old daughter was freaking out due to hunger. 50mins past our reservation time is absurd. Food and service at the table was good.
We visit Maui almost once a year and usually include Kobe Japanese Steak House on our list of restaurants. This visit I would rate as good but not as good as previous experiences. A lot of the dinner is tied to the "performance" given by your chef. Ours was just OK.
Everyone is given soup to start and it is fair at best (not the chef's doing). The shrimp appetizer was OK but not as flavorful as it has been in past experiences. My wife had the chicken and shrimp combo while I had the scallops and shrimp combo with fried rice, which is an additional charge. Everything seemed to lack something and the scallops were definitely overcooked. The rice was good and I don't mind the additional charge for it. The hot sake is what you'd expect from a house wine so no complaints on that score. Overall a good dinner but not our best experience at Kobe on Maui.
