What Insiders Are Saying
Yes, there will be a wait at Kitchen Story in the Castro. But there’s millionaire’s bacon at the end of it.
Decor and ambiance was great. The food could’ve been much better. We ordered the pumpkin fries, pacific pad Thai, and the bucolic baby back ribs. The only redeeming piece of food were the pumpkin fries: tender, moist, very flavorful! Nearly every bite of the pacific pad Thai had uncracked crab shells, ruining the experience. The baby back ribs were easy to eat with a fork, but they were dry and very bland. Although the food lacked flavor, the presentation was interesting.
Short-rib noodle sooouuuup. Holy cow.
It is pretty noisy in here though. Especially if there’s a birthday, in which case they bring out a metal pitcher full of metal spoons for the sole purpose of rattling it around in order to make even more noise. So, there’s that.
But the food is so dope, that the noise is honestly worth it. Definitely recommend!
Dinner date. Ok service and the food was decent. Not a lot to complain about, but also not a lot worth remembering
Simply wonderful...all the time, everytime! A neighborhood treasure!
Everything we tried was amazing! Crab fried rice! They also have their version of Loco Moco that was delicious! Makes us want to go back for more. Definitely recommend this for some good comfort food. Wait staff are all very friendly, efficient and great.
Employees are slow to check on you to take an order, ask how the food is, and give a check. I stated we were celebrating a birthday and the host was in a rush to seat us that they didn’t even acknowledge it. Don’t really understand why this place has such a hype aside from their cocktails it didn’t meet my expectations
We like Kitchen Story - we like the food and the chef’s creativity with the dishes. Sometimes we do wish that the staff would check in more often during the meal more, rather than we constantly have to flag them down for water, another spoon or napkin, and even the check.
was not impressed with this place. it was essentially fancy thai food. even though we had a reservation we still had to wait over 15 min to be sat down and that was after having to chase the hostess down multiple times reminding her we already HAD a reservation. it was difficult to get someone to stop and grab us things we needed during meals, the people placing the food on the table were very rude and kept walking away from us when we would ask questions about the dishes. It was overly priced fro what we were eating. It was very crowded, and they place the tables right on top of each other so there is absolutely no personal space.
awesome variety on the menu. great that it spans american and thai food. ambience is amazing.
Everything was prepared with creative flair and consistency. Portions were very large for the price. The crowd was slightly thin for a Saturday night and I am not sure why. The wines were a bit overpriced for the vibe. But would definitely recommend the whole experience to others.
Kitchen Story is a good restaurant that does some things very well, but service was spotty. The Millionaire's Bacon was great. The Spicy Kobe Rolls were meh - not spicy, not particularly flavorful, and not very interesting. The burger was great. Service was inconsistent. For example, everyone was very friendly and items arrived quickly, but it never seemed to occur to anyone to check in after food or drinks were delivered. So nobody asked if we would like another glass of wine or more water, or if our food was to our liking, and we kept having to flag someone down to ask for things.
Great food, but pretty noisy and hard to hear the server as well as my company.
Awesome food as always!
Came here for dinner. Left satisfied amd full!
Will definitely come back!
Tasty assortment of cocktails, lousy service, super noisy with distracting big screen tv over bar wall. Ordered pumpkin fries and server never brought them. Server rude and dusinterested in serving us. Will not return to this restaurant again. I'd rather eat at Denny's. At least they don't ignore their customers.
We had the ribs, the wagyu steak, the bacon wrapped scallops, and the ahi cups and they were all delicious. The wagyu steak is quite a show too.
loved it! was s perfect setting for a small gathering of friends for a birthday. the food was yummy, fast and varied - all the options for all the sensitivities. highly recommend!
They closed the restaurant at 9.30 and did not offer dessert. Very bad service. Food nice.
I have been there many times through the years and the service get gets progressively worse. They were under staffed and the service was painfully slow.
We had a large party for a birthday celebration. The restaurant had a nice ambience, however it was very loud and we could only hear the person next to you. The food was good, some of the appetizers were hit and miss. The service was cool and impersonal. The experience was otherwise very enjoyable except at the end of the visit. One of the guests found a larva in her water. We pointed it out the the waitstaff and they felt it might have come from the mint in the water. There was no apology, which was shocking. We paid our bill and the 20 % automatically added tip and left.
Surprised us with champagne to celebrate our anniversary. So thoughtful
Amazing creative yet classic dishes. Brunch and lunch are so so tasty here! They could work on the speed of their service. Otherwise, and even considering, fantastic experience.
The stone pot was very good but the avocado salad was very disappointing (too much dressing and not a good one...) very noisy, decoration is nice though, service was average and a bit slow.
This was not my first time at the Kitchen Story. I love this place and when my friends were visiting from another country, I knew exactly where I wanted to take them. This was my first dinner experience there, though. This is a wonderful brunch spot (have to try the Millionaire's Bacon!) but now I know this place is also great for a casual dinner. We all loved our experience!
Kitchen story’s food is some of the best in the city! Always a favorite!
I don't live in the Bay Area, but my kids do. Kitchen Story is always on our list for a great dinner out. There are favorites we order all of the time. However, in addition there is a nice variety so that we can try new things and everyone can find something that they love. Service is always great! Keep it up Kitchen Story!
The salmon spaghetti was interesting and tasty. It was a cute and cozy restaurant. I would go there for a casual dining experience.
The menu is very hard to navigate and the wait staff, while kind, were not that much help.
Great food. Staff was very nice and even accommodated us earlier than the reserved time. Great food in a casual environment. Would highly recommend!
One of my favorite places in SF.
The food is delicious and beautifully presented.
The Kitchen Story staff is beyond fantastic. (Everyone is so polite and considerate)
I’ve been there many times and never disappointed.
Any choice is a good choice! Millionaire bacon unlike anything you’ve tasted!
Frisco Benedict and Millionaire Bacon that I ordered for lunch were delicious. However, acoustics there could be improved. I could barely listened to what my friends were saying. Overall, it’s a very good neighborhood restaurant.
DELICIOUS Eastern/Western food. Pad Thai and Panang Curry to die for and the Bloody Mary's were the best I've ever had in a restaurant and I have searched far and wide!
Overall a very sad experience, we wanted to have a good time and ended up leaving angry and disgusted: 1) Terrible welcome: we had a reservation for 6, we arrived 15min early and had to wait 45min for our table, even though people arriving after us got seated immediately. 2) Disappointing food and drink: the Bloody Mary was absolutely disgusting, felt like it was spiced with Doritos, the other drinks (berries cocktail, Pinot noir, beer) were ok, though overpriced. The food was average at most. In one plate, there were chunks of wasabi in the sauce and some bites would left you in tears while others were hardly spiced. 3) Terrible service: the waitress looked angry and sad, and was not making any effort to hear our orders, we had to repeat 5 times, and she looked extremely annoyed (like it is our fault the place is so noisy we can’t hear each other). Three of us got their plate in 5min after ordering (do you even cook in there?) the others had to wait 15min....this is hugely unprofessional, we are dining together and none of us want to eat cold.
We arrived 30 min early for our reservation. As packed as it was, I didn’t think we would be able to be seated early, but the host made it happen. The food is always delicious! I finally tried the burger with the Millionaire’s bacon; it was worth every penny and calorie!
The restaurant is always packed and noisy, which we’ve come to expect. So, the ambiance doesn’t suit intimate conversations.
Went to Kitchen Story with a group of eight friends on a Saturday night and it was the perfect volume to chat as a group. Food came at a good pace and was delicious. One downside was the waiter recommended appetizers that would be good for sharing, except some turned out to be difficult for sharing.
The food was only okay and the service was horrible. Probably would not go back.
Great for brunch with friends! Huge servings and also great for sharing.
Great meal. Would come back.
Food was great! Drinks were way too expensive
We ate here on our last night here, we wished we would have tried it earlier in our stay so we could have come here for another meal. There were so many choices!! We had great service and the food was fantastic!
