Great menu...nice variety of meals and crafted drinks. I'm a vegan and can still find something good to order. Lots of windows to allow for people watching, and the staff is always polite and attentive. A true neighborhood gem!
Great food, great ambiance.
We live in the hood but have not taken advantage of Story as much as we should. Very good meal and I like the service, ambiance. My only advice would be to 'juge' up a bit the washroom. It needed a bit of polish.
Went here for dinner before a show and the pumpkin curry was incredible! The service was a little slow but overall would go back.
Good food lots of options, great for sharing. Cocktails were good even though they don’t have their liquor license. For food get the sexy aloha :-)
We had a party of 4 the day after Valentine's, at around 6:15pm. Our order consisted of the calamari (thick pieces with squid film left on the meat, soggy breading inside, crispy outside), quesadilla (good), followed by pumpkin curry with shrimp (sauce was a bit too thin, but tasty), Pacific Pad Thai (served disassembled and too sweet for my taste, though the seafood was cooked perfectly) and basil chicken --all of which were pretty good. Dessert consisted of the caramel mousse atop a crumble, which was too tough for people to bite through -- and you do not get much for $10. Following the so-so food, however, at exactly 7pm the noise levels went through the roof and we could no longer hear each other speak. Even thinking was difficult. Never coming back.
This is generally one of my favorite restaurants, but this was an off night for them. The burger was overcooked, and the pork belly too chewy.

Our table was ready on time and the server was very attentive, but it went downhill from there. The chairs are arguable the most uncomfortable seats to be found in any restaurant in SF; torture. The noise level was deafening. Forget having a conversation with the person sitting across the table from you.
When the waiter returned to the table he he took our order for food he took our order for cocktails informing us that they only offer beer and wine. Not a big deal. The Thai beer was good.
He returned shortly thereafter and took the food order and within several minutes the appetizers began to appear. I say began to appear because it was at least five minutes before two of the four appetizers finally arrived. The Steak Roll looked great and tasted like cardboard. Very pleasing to the eye, but as far as seasoning or creativity in preparation, it fell flat. The vegetables that were rolled up in the steak tasted like they'd been sitting in the refrigerator too long. The Castro Tower was a sight to behold, but tasted bland. The spicy sauce that accompanied the Steak Roll was full of sugar, no heat. We hadn't finished our appetizers and the entrees began to arrive, unevenly, like the appetizers. In fact none of the entrees that promised to be spicy and sounded great on the menu description either tasted bland or were loaded with sugar. This chef evidently likes sugar a whole hell of a lot because it overpowered all the other items in the Pacific Pad Thai. The Short Rib Tacos were crowded onto the plate, the meat was way over-cooked and resembled refrigerator leftovers that had to be used up. They tasted worse. The chips they served were placid and tasteless. The Pad Thai ws so sweet I couldn't finish it. We asked for the dessert menu and but the waiter bought the check, so we just left. He probably wasn't paying attention because he looked a little harried after a while.

Kitchen Story turned out to be a hit among my friends and myself. The food was delicious and very fresh. The hit of the evening was the millionaire's bacon. It was so yummy, a combination of sweet and salty. My friend loved his hamburger and my other friend loved her rice with pineapple. The pineapple was so fresh; she had to wait a little longer for her dish because it took awhile for the kitchen to carve up the pineapple. The service was excellent and the furnishings were warm and inviting, lots of wood and homey touches on the wall. The only slight disappointment was the limited list of desserts. There were only about five on the menu and most of them had a creamy texture (custard or mousse). All in all, however, the restaurant was excellent. I would recommend it to my family and friends.
The food was good but strangely expensive. Twenty-something dollars for pad Thai and about the same for soft-shell crab (deep-fried and unidentifiable as crab, really) with crab fried rice. The fried rice was pretty tasty but maybe not worth the money. Also, the room is like a camp dining hall. An expensive camp but a camp nonetheless. Service was good. Overall, it’s an odd experience.
Food was good, but not worth the high price. Service was inconsistent, the servers hung out in the back and didn’t seem to check in on the tables. Although he was very nice, we had to go find out server a couple of times. Lastly the music was a weird and not at all great for eating dinner.
The staff is amazing. Very friendly and attentive. Any diah with the Millionaire Bacon in it is great. Save room for dessert... the panna cotta is awesome.
The only downside is that the bathroom garbage can needed to be emptied.

Family in town for Christmas
The food was great. The only issue was that two of the entrees were brought at least 5 minutes before the remaining two were brought to the table.
It's very innovative upscale Thai food. It's a little pricey for what it is, but that's the Castro.

I booked this restaurant because of the reviews, what a disappointment! My reservation was for 5:00 pm on a week day, the restaurant has a huge TV which was on very loud, no matter where in the restaurant you sat the TV was very distracting. The music was also on Extremely loud. It was clear that the food was not freshly made and probably reheated in the microwave. One clue the food was reheated, was how quickly it came out. We ordered the samosas too much dough and too much oil. Also ordered the fried chicken, which again had too much batter, it was sitting on a pound of boiled potatoes with tomato sauce, again clear that it was not fresh very little chicken way too many potatoes. My friend ordered a Thai salad and could only eat half, just no flavor, blah. No sooner had our dishes been taken away that the bill appeared. We were never asked if we wanted to look at a desert menu or coffee. There was only one other table taken. From walking into the restaurant to leaving it all took 50 minutes. The noise level, the tv, the food, the service all disappointing. Will definitely not be back or recommend it. Oh yeah and they also wanted a credit cata to hold the reservation, as I said only two tables were taken.
Casual comfortable food with good and efficient service. A bit on the pricey side.

First time at this restaurant, and what a memorable night it was. The food, the energy from the other guests, the wait staff - all of it made for a fabulous evening! Next time I am in San Francisco, I will definitely go back. Loved the Millionaire Bacon Quesadila, and the chicken noodle soup was delicious. Campbells, eat your heart out!

Nice last minute find for a date night with husband. Food was tasty and we both enjoyed the meal.
We booked a table for 3 outside as we wanted to dine out with my dog, Luigi. It was a typical cold and windy San Francisco night, but that did not dissuade us from enjoying our meals, the Quesadilla with Millionaire’s Bacon, Asparagus with Millionaire’s Bacon, and the Beef Rib soup. Delicious food, very unique and ample portions. A great value for money I though. Service out in the gulag was spotty at the start but improved dramatically once our server realized we were out there. Looking forward to a return visit for brunch, which is their sweet spot.

A nice spot for a solid, not to fancy, meal. Service was excellent with the meals arriving quickly after we ordered. The server took special care to come up with acceptable (non-menu) vegan dishes for two of my guests. I only sampled one dessert, but it was truly outstanding. We were not rushed, but everything was done quite efficiently. I definitely would go back if in the area again.

My mom and I came to Kitchen Story during our first night in San Francisco. After traveling from Boston early in the morning, all we wanted was yummy, comforting meal. Little did we know we would have one of the best meals of our lives!! Food was amazing, service was amazing. I can’t wait to go back!
The food was delicious and presentation was well done. The server was attentive. It was odd to have a flat screen on the wall with a boxing match on--it didn't add to the ambiance.

Famous for it's sugar & cayenne-dusted 'Millionaire's bacon', Kitchen Story is, I was told, a red-hot brunch spot with long queues. Instead we went for dinner (for which you can book) and although everything was fine, nothing about the experience really blew our socks off. Millionaire's bacon quesadillas, which we shared as an appetiser, with a spicy satay dip were the best dish, albeit somewhat messy to eat.
The bacon made another appearance in the - rather dry - burger; in neither dish could we discern anything special about the bacon, other than it being pleasingly thickly-cut. The fries with the burger were very good though. Softshell crab with Dungeness crab fried rice and a fried egg was good if a little bland; it really needed the accompanying sauces to bring it to life. The rice was very generously flecked with sweet Dungeness crab though, to its credit. There's no full bar so you're limited to the few cocktails on the list; the two we ordered weren't great and were small and expensive. We also ordered a bottle of wine and didn't appreciate the waitress's comment of "Wow, that's a lot of alcohol!" - OK this is California but a) it's the anything-goes Castro b) we're adults and c) it's really none of her business.
Overall, it was fine; nothing was bad, but nothing was great either. If brunch really is as good as people say than that's probably the time to go, and leave it to the locals at dinner.
Vegetarian options too slim and portions very small. Fried callimari could have been sliced thinner. Great taste in Panang curry, but not enough salmon. Relied on cheap pieces of fish like squid.
Don’t understand the hype with Kitchen Story. Ok wine selection, great Bloody Marys and below average food which cannot be justified for the prices. We had seafood oriented dishes and probably that’s their Achilles heel. May be their brunch is better.
