The Kitchen Step aspires to become an integral part of the local’s dining repertoire; a true ‘neighborhood bistro’ that is just as appropriate for an after-work drink as it is for a full-coursed dinner.
At The Kitchen Step, Chef Ryan DePersio will flex his modern American muscle against delivering a menu that regularly changes with the seasons and features the best of what local markets have to offer in regards to ingredients and flavor.
Always great service. Fantastic cocktails. Wonderful place to meet up and dine.
We have been to Kitchen Step many times and the food is always great. Creative, interesting and delicious. We had a reservation, but still had to wait a long time for a table. They couldn’t have been nicer. They comped us the first round of drinks. And also gave us a free appetizer when they had run out of something. Always pleasant and accommodating. We will be back again.
Treated to champagne on my birthday- so thoughtful and better than a dessert
Very good food, great vibe. Only issue is the portion size is small for the price.
We had a drink at the bar before dinner. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Food was good.
This is my favorite place to go to when there's a snow storm or it's too cold to venture any further than a couple blocks. The service is always great and the food is never a disappointment. They change their menu throughout the year, but everything on there is great and they also have vegetarian options. The staff knows how to recommend a good wine and the cocktails are great - although a little on the smaller pour side. They are located in a great neighborhood just 8 mins walking from the PATH and away from the crowd.
Cute intimate spot with great farm to table dishes and a creative food and drinks menu. I enjoyed the celery root tagliatelle with mushroom ragout- it a wintry night and this vegan dish was so hearty and warming! Would return again to try other items on the menu!
Very attentive service. Cozy atmosphere. Drinks are excellent. Entree were OK, above average but OK. Small plates and appetizers were good.
Lovely food. Great staff. Little bit cramped. Quite s small narrow space.
Sad to see the chicken and waffles was not in the menu this past visit, but we were assured it would be back soon
Very good food and very good service. However, for the price, some of the drinks are tiny and all of the food is tiny. My date had the duck and I think there were four small (2 inches by 3/4 inch pieces) of duck and like 4 "trumpet" mushrooms on a plate (their "large" plate). The appetizer was prosciutto and bread. Two pieces (small) of bread and maybe 3 thin, small slices of prosciutto. My gnocchi was very good, but again not much in terms of amount. Desserts are larger and good.
Casual and Delicious
Kitchen Step is a casual bistro with top-notch food and service. The cuisine is creative, beautifully prepared, and is mostly locally sourced. Among the small plates, the chicken-fried mushrooms provided a unique and deliciously savory taste treat, and the strawberry gaspacho was nuanced and most satisfying for a warm summer's evening. Our large plates included Barnegat scallops, with shaved carrots, radish, roasted peppers and bacon marmalade -- amazing! The 14-oz pork chop with Swiss chard, Parmigiano spaetzle, and Morello cherry mostarda was thick, savory and moist -- cooked to perfection. Service was spot-on. Kitchen Step's indoor dining area is narrow storefront that is a little tight, but it's nicely decorated and ultimately, comfortable. (The restaurant also offers sidewalk seating in the warm months.) If you like delicious, creative cuisine served in a casual atmosphere, this is the place to go. It's among the best foodie destinations in the burgeoning Jersey City restaurant scene.
This season's drinks were not as good as prior visits. Everything else was very good. Place is pricey, but the pork shoulder was really tasty and filling. Salmon was delicious and a nice steaklike cut. Service was good and attentive. Not our first visit and won't be our last.
This is usually our go-to spot for a good meal and cocktail. Not sure what was going on Thursday night but the service was slow and waitress was not attentive. The food came out after a long time and my duck breast was a little cold. I know there was a big party of 10+ folks next to us so perhaps that threw the kitchen out of sync. Hoping our next visit is more like what we are used to.
This is the real deal: The perfect neighborhood gem. Always delicious and wonderful.
A real find. Worth the trip.
Wasn’t as good as usual but I will continue to patronize as that was my only mediocre visit
My only two complaints was the waitress messed up one of the orders but she did tell us the truth that it was her fault and the second round of drinks (a beer and a cider) took abnormally long. They did seat us over 20 mins early though.
This place never disappoints. Service is already the absolute best :)
Tasty seasonal cocktails and delicious food combinations! Great find!
Kitchen step is always delicious!
We had been in JC less than six months and wanted to venture somewhere new within a comfortable walk from home. Kitchen Step JC’s homey menu and relaxed feel suited us perfectly. Short ribs were among the best I have ever had—and I’m a Southern guy with family roots in Appalachian and the south Midwest. Cocktails creative and well balanced.
Amazing and very accommodating!
Food and service were excellent. Probably the best duck entree I've had in recent memory. Drinks and wine list were top shelf. First time having dinner in JC but won't be our last. We'll be back to the Kitchen JC.
Loved this place. When we walked in we greeted by a smiling server who offered to take our umbrellas. We were shown to our table and greeted by our server Katrina. She was very polite and patient as we waited for the rest of our party. The live music they play Tuesday night was a nice surprise. The food was outstanding. The duck wings and pork cheeks are reasons to come back. All and all a great experience. Literally planning our next time back.
Super delicious - seasonal ingredients in a new interpretation, yet not too fancy!
And a great, very friendly service!
Varied menu. Great ideas for a brunch menu. Very flavorful. Good service. Great place and will go back.
The food was great, the decor is simple and modern . It was a wonderful experience and I will surely be back.
Amazing food and service! Cocktails are on point! Couldn’t have asked for a better dining experience.
Probably the best restaurant of its kind in Jersey City, meaning a restaurant that prepares inventive, highly-quality dishes and at a reasonable price. The food is excellent, often coming close to, if not on the same level, as that of Per Se in New York and Core in London, but without the pretense and fussiness. It's a casual, friendly restaurant.
This is my favorite restaurant in Jersey City, and this visit was no exception. We were celebrating my birthday and our wedding anniversary, and our server went out of her way to make it special. The food is always delicious, the menu offers a good variety, including vegetarian choices.
And the cocktails list is worth a visit all on its own. Their house mixologist creates a new cocktails menu seasonally, and each time it’s fillled with unique and delectable concoctions. This time I had something off the brunch drinks menu called Matching Flannels that had vodka, cider, apple butters and bubbles, maybe something else I’m forgetting. It was light and flavorful.
I look forward to our next visit to Kitchen Step.
Overall, I’m pleased with Kitchen Step. I like their service. My only complaint is that the food is not consistent. Some days I come here and the food is great, other times, the food is cooked too dry, overly salted, and smaller portions. I wish they had better consistency.
Great friendly place with good food, fun people in an energetic environment
Terrific experience. Chef Nick and the staff went above and beyond. Every dish was really exceptional. Was the perfect place to take my mother for dinner.
I feel the the food is overpriced in general. The service was excellent. The kale salad had a very weak dressing that didn't complement / tone down the kale taste. My scallops were delicious but the underlying bed of broccoli rob didn't have a sauce to tone down the bitter taste (don't like broccoli rob). Again, food price too expensive for a medium scale restaurant. Our waitress was very nice and accommodating.
Food and atmosphere were great. Our server was very helpful although all the food came out very fast and we felt rushed. Would return but will request the courses to be better paced out.
15 out of 10 would go again. Great place. Good and service. If one is looking for a great day 🌃 would highly recommend.
Great service, lovely ambiance. Food is a bit overpriced and since I did not think my breakfast burrito was actually that tasty - it was not exactly worth the money. Normally I like the food, but the burrito is just tasteless.
This place was great for sharing and trying a bunch of items on the menu! My boyfriend and I shared the brussel sprouts, burratta, pork cheek and lamb poutine. We were worried it wasn't going to be enough food but it was very filling. The burratta was a stand out for me. The pumpkin puree was so delicious and unlike any pumpkin puree I have ever had. Our bill was also less than expected so we will definitely be back!
Delicious rotating creative menu. Excellent service, delicious cocktails.
Lots of kid friendly foods — comfort foods for adults too.
