Kitchen Step JC
The Kitchen Step aspires to become an integral part of the local’s dining repertoire; a true ‘neighborhood bistro’ that is just as appropriate for an after-work drink as it is for a full-coursed dinner.
At The Kitchen Step, Chef Ryan DePersio will flex his modern American muscle against delivering a menu that regularly changes with the seasons and features the best of what local markets have to offer in regards to ingredients and flavor.

I feel the the food is overpriced in general. The service was excellent. The kale salad had a very weak dressing that didn't complement / tone down the kale taste. My scallops were delicious but the underlying bed of broccoli rob didn't have a sauce to tone down the bitter taste (don't like broccoli rob). Again, food price too expensive for a medium scale restaurant. Our waitress was very nice and accommodating.
Food and atmosphere were great. Our server was very helpful although all the food came out very fast and we felt rushed. Would return but will request the courses to be better paced out.
15 out of 10 would go again. Great place. Good and service. If one is looking for a great day 🌃 would highly recommend.
Great service, lovely ambiance. Food is a bit overpriced and since I did not think my breakfast burrito was actually that tasty - it was not exactly worth the money. Normally I like the food, but the burrito is just tasteless.
This place was great for sharing and trying a bunch of items on the menu! My boyfriend and I shared the brussel sprouts, burratta, pork cheek and lamb poutine. We were worried it wasn't going to be enough food but it was very filling. The burratta was a stand out for me. The pumpkin puree was so delicious and unlike any pumpkin puree I have ever had. Our bill was also less than expected so we will definitely be back!
Delicious rotating creative menu. Excellent service, delicious cocktails.
Lots of kid friendly foods — comfort foods for adults too.
Came for brunch on our anniversary. We were congratulated by all levels of staff. That and the great food made our day memorable
Awesome restaurant. Only negative thing is the parking but it’s Jersey City so it’s to be expected. Take Uber if u can!
The bartender was great!
Had chicken meatballs to start, and the tuna as main dish. Tuna was great! I would def go back. Sat outside, was a great night weather-wise. The bread pudding was incredible.
A perfect little neighborhood restaurant with a focus on good unique cocktails and food that is prepared with care and simplicity in mind. Great spot for a quiet date night.
Warm greeting. Lovely, skilled server. Calm ambiance. Delicious zucchini fries. However, the rest of the meal was average. The duck wings relied heavily on the crunch of the batter and the nuts and salt of the sauce — the meat of the wings was dry (I thought duck was fatty) and lacking in flavor. The kale salad was tasty enough, but unimaginatively presented for a dish at dinner, and loaded up with too much dressing. The ricotta gnocchi was light, fluffy and smooth in texture but the flavor of the gnocchi and corn based sauce together was flat giving the overall experience one of eating fluffy corn paste. The cuisine seemed to rely heavily on salt in its flovoring — a characteristic of the pork chop with collard greens plate as well. I found myself aching for a more nuanced use of spices for a broader spectrum of enjoyment.
for a drink i got return of The Mac- tequila, lemon, lavender,
campari, red wine sugar. It was too sweet for me & I think the final
product ended up losing all of the nuance of the individual
We also all shared food:
zucchini fries | harissa mayo dipping sauce 9
these were okay. They were super thin, like shoe string.
Really greasy and salty & just tasted like fry. I think if i ordered
these at like a more downscale bar food place i'd find them acceptable, but expected
duck wings | miso, sesame, peanuts, vermicelli noodles 10
not too great. these were huge: like chicken leg size. The meat was
pretty dry. Nothing amazing about them. It came with 6 though which I
think is good amount
prosciutto di parma | whipped ricotta, honey, toasted baguette 12
this was the best thing we had. the whipped ricotta was flavored with
lemon and really delicious. not a lot of prosciutto, like 4 slices.
truffle maccheroni & cheese | herbed brown butter crumbs 13
not very cheesy or gooey. it was fine. You get the truffle in the
first couple bites then it kind of retreats to the background (as
truffle is wont to do). I'm not a huge fan of mac and cheese in the
tuna provencal | cucumber, spring onion, tomato, toasted baguette 14
okay, this was the worst. we were debating ordering it and i said
amongst the table "is this just like canned tuna?" and my dining mates said "god no,
it will be like a chunk of seared tuna" well lol at them
because this was literally effin canned tuna salad with absolutely
nothing special nor inventive about it. Seriously what you'd get in a
(nice) hospital cafeteria
burrata | heirloom tomatoes, melon, donut peach, parmesan crisp 14
this was good. the tomatoes were ripe. i dont recall there being any
peaches or melon on the dish actually, unless those were pureed in the
yummy balsamic tinged sauce underneath it all. Burrata was tasty.
Atmosphere was lovely. Service was wonderful and attentive. Food was eh.
Great for friends get together. Tasty brunch! Great drinks!
Service was mediocre. Food was not as described on menu, specifically the Nutella pancakes (plain + sauce vs as pancake) and ricotta with peaches / cucumber w non existent peaches. Hair found in chicken + waffles. Removed chicken from bill but would have still charged for replacement dish, when they simply should have been mortified that it happened.
We’ve eaten here many times since they opened. This time the food was not up to par. The appetizer turned out to be tuna salad on bread, my cocktail was strange and unsatisfying and my entree was undercooked.
Do not recommend this restaurant. Food was below par.
It was my first time at the Kitchen Step for a night out with my girl-friend and I was pleasantly surprised. The food was AMAZING! Our waitress was super nice and friendly and recommended great cocktails. Overall, it is an awesome place in Jersey City and I am definitely coming back, with my boyfriend next time:)
Was looking for a nice dinner spot and this place definitely fit the bill. Good location, wonderful variety and great price point and service. Highly recommend and will definitely be back.
The food is always good and the staff there is always super nice. My go-to neighborhood brunch spot.
Was recommended by countless friends and locals in the area. Finally went here with my husband and my parents for dinner and was NOT disappointed! The food was incredible - get the duck wings if you can. TO DIE FOR!
Fabulous food- service was great! Noise was a bit tough but we just talked louder
Our Sunday brunch was outstanding, as always! Very creative and delicious food and drinks
We were staying in the nearby marina and stumbled upon this gem of a restaurant. Haven’t really been to Jersey City and it felt just like the Village. Kitchen Step JC is a fabulous restaurant. Great vibe, amweaome menu and the food was terrific. And the service(Erin) was spectacular!
Can’t wait to go back!
Such an enjoyable environment. Food is imaginative and delicious. As are the cocktails. One of our favorite restaurants in JC or even NYC for that matter. Always very good.
We ordered lots of different small plates. Each was creative and delicious. Even something ordinary like fried chicken was extra delicious. Cocktails were also very special
This was a wonderful meal, from start to finish! Great decor, creative cocktails, absolutely delicious food with decent sized portions, and the service was friendly and attentive. It definitely has a bit of a NYC restaurant feel, as it's a bit crowded. Long and narrow with tables close together- but don't let that be a reason not to go!
Everyone ordered something different and each dish was exceptional. Our server was exceptional. We were there with a group of 5 for a birthday and could not have enjoyed it more.
Didn't know what to expect with this place, but it was absolutely excellent. Great food using really fresh ingredients. Good variety of mixed drinks as well. Decent portion sizes and reasonably priced.
Prosciutto was good. Duck wings were extremely bland and fairly dry. Snapper special was delicious - make sure you pour the sauce over it. Ring of fire drink was excellent and prepared in an artsy fun way.
The restaurant is a quaint spot that is great for friends, date night, or couple dates. The waitress are very helpful and have great recommendations. Don't forget to have the "Ring of Fire" One of my favorite cocktails.
The staff could not have been nicer or more accommodating. I have dietary restrictions and the waitress, manager, and chef went out of their way to prepare something I could eat. The food was delicious.
One of the best meals I’ve had in a long time. The seasonal menu is so creative and interesting. Everything on the menu just works so well and tastes great. The burrata was incredible.
Always a treat! Great service, amazing food.
Food was very good -- interesting combinations and treatments. My scallops were excellent, and members of my party who had the chicken were very pleased. We ordered two of the small plates -- zucchini frites and chicken-fried cauliflower to share for appetizers and enjoyed them very much. Good flavors and the right amount of food to share for 4. Large portions of the soft ice cream (apricot-flavored -- yum!) were perfect for 2 to share. Management was more than gracious in accommodating our request for a quiet table. Will definitely go back. Lots of interesting items on the menu still to try.
Excellent, high quality and creative food. Everything on the menu is worth trying, including the creative cocktails. I recommend the chicken-fried mushrooms with green goddess dressing, the croissant French toast, and the cornbread for brunch. There is also a cocktail that involves flavored "snow", which is just as fun to look at as it is to drink. Service is always on point--everyone genuinely cares about the guest experience and goes above and beyond to accommodate their guests. We were gifted with a few complimentary snacks which made us feel valued, and allowed us to try more menu items. This is definitely my #1 brunch spot in Jersey City, and is also excellent for dinner.
Met a good friend for brunch and we were amazed at the quality of the food. The brunch menu was a fun variety of fresh garden options and new twists on standards such as waffles, pancakes and croissant French toast. The mixology cocktails are also amazing. We will be back.
Food, staff, ambiance! Best restaurant in Jersey City. Just an all around unbelievable experience.
Thanks to our server Tammy, manager Evan and of course The Chef!!! Nick!!
We’ll be back!
We were very happy and fully satisfied after our meal at Kitchen Step. The menu was a great change from the usual, the seasonal cocktails were delicious. We loved our super accommodating and knowledgeable server Tammy! Can’t wait to go back.
Overall a nice experience, with excellent service, but the food was not up to the standard of earlier visits. The gnocchi were tough and pretty tasteless and the fried chicken was buried in a sauce which made it soggy. Since we have been pleased with our food the other times we have been there, we will most likely give it another chance.
