The food had no flavor at all. 30 minutes after leaving we both became violently ill.
Short ribs were amazing!
I accidentally spilt my fresh drink all over our table and the bartender was nice enough to give me a brand new one. It was also my brother’s birthday and the waitress gave him a small dessert with a candle, which was a surprise.
Without doubt great food - we had avocado toast, empanadas and gniocchi - all tasting excellent. One issue that we were not impressed was the service, slow in serving food but fast in asking questions if you want anything more, more drinks etc. Also it is not a place for a quiet conversation.
The food was delicious and the cocktail menu is my absolute favorite!!
The entrée prices are very reasonable as well.
Hands down one of the best dining experiences in the area - day and night. The place runs like a well oiled machine. Love it here.
Great service. Classy ambience. Love the short rib. Highly recommended especially if you have visiting friends to impress 😀
My friend and I had a pregnant lady date together and had a lovely time. The bartender made us delicious mocktails and the waitress was very attentive and accommodating. A wonderful dining experience- thanks!
The food is terrific, the service is great, and the ambiance nice.
This is a great place to go on a date, or to grab dinner & drinks with friends. The food was great and the service was even better. The waitress was very attentive. I highly recommend the kale salad & steak, which was cooked perfectly. I don't spend much time in the area, but I'm glad that I came here when I did!
Our second dinner was as lovely as the first one, last week. We tried new dishes and were very happy with all of them. The service was attentive and casual at the same time. The live music was enjoyable as it was not too loud but added charm to the atmosphere. After our first visit, we thought this could become our local hang out, and so far, it wins.
My go to place in JC
one of my favorite places in JC. I keep coming back!
Amazing food and service - layout was a bit snug, even by NYC standards
My friend and I went early. The restaurant was empty. They seated us in the middle of a long row of tables, I asked if we could sit on the end or in the window. And she said no, the seats are already planned out... no one was in the restaurant yet and only other groups if two showed up most of the night. That was already off putting from the beginning. Then the server was over eager to move us from course to course. Our appetizer was only half eaten and she asked if we were finished yet. Then a few minutes later our dish came out before even removing the appetizer plates and we still hadn’t finished the appetizer... we were checked on much too often and our wine topped off without actually getting remotely low in the glass. Eventually at the end of the night my friend and I were still catching up and finishing our wine and dessert and we were asked to move seats so they could push tables together for a group of 3. Usually when I’ve had that happen (which is rare) I’m offered a drink or something taken off the bill. Nothing. And it wouldn’t have been as much of a problem if we hadn’t felt rushed and hastened the whole time. It’s too bad. The food was good and the atmosphere was lovey, just didn’t feel fully comfortable with the staff.
Our first meal there was lovely from start to finish, and we repeatedly said during the course of dinner, this will become our go-to restaurant in Jersey City. The space is welcoming, narrow but not crowded and tastefully decorated. The menu has a lot of options for small and big appetites, meat eaters or vegetarians. Everything was well prepared, nicely presented and delicious. We shared a fish taco, then had the shrimp a la plancha on an excellent risotto, the mussels, all very good. The fries could have been a little more crisp, but the mussels were excellent. The wine-by-the-glass offered good options at reasonable prices. We almost broke our no dessert policy (in January) because ricotta zeppole with nutella ganache?! But we held strong. We'll be back though, even for a cocktail at the bar with an app. The cocktail list was very appealing. There are other nice restaurants in Jersey City, but Kitchen Step is a step above without a doubt.
We ate at Kitchen Step as a party of 6 who all consider ourselves highly seasoned and discriminating dinners. We all were thoroughly impressed. For appetizers, we shared empanadas, and zucchini fries. Main courses included Moroccan chicken, short ribs, pork chops, Bronzino. Everything was outstanding. Perfectly done and not overly spiced or “played with” like so many chefs who try to hard to impress. The wine list has great bottles under $50. Service was excellent and unobtrusive. We look forward to returning.
Love the little details throughout the place. Especially the palm tree bathroom wallpaper!
Very nice spot. Friendly and thoughtful service. Reasonably priced for a notable chef with a varied menu of options for all dietary needs. Generous portions. Fun and creative cocktail program. I really loved all the touches with decor and tabletop. We look forward to many visits to Kitchen Step. Bravo. A definite gem in a bustling JC dining scene.
We were happy we made a reservation as we were seated right by the window. Great table not right next to anyone else or between other tables, and we had great people watching opportunities.
The food was fantastic. We couldn't believe it took us so long to finally try the restaurant. We enjoyed everything we ordered. The zucchini fries were awesome - perfectly cut, perfectly battered and perfectly fried. The bibb salad was fresh and balanced. The truffle mac and cheese had to be ordered as well and was delicious. All recommended.
For the large plates we split the burger and the shrimp risotto. Both stellar choices. Huge shrimp. Burger cooked to order with great, thick bacon and caramelized onions. For dessert we were stuffed and got them to go so it is hard to judge them on how they held up on our walk home, especially with ice cream. Great flavors! The chocolate cake with marshmallow and the bread pudding.
Highly recommended. We cannot wait to return, especially for brunch!
Delicious food, creative cocktails, and a pretty setting, this is another strong entry from Ryan DePersio. The presentation was attractive and well-timed, and the dining room is charming, but the food is the real stand-out, especially the short ribs. Well worth the drive.
Great drinks and amazing food.
Excellent brunch! Cocktails were amazing, food was fantastic (we even got the pancakes as a dessert and they were to die for), and Tammy our server made us feel like all our needs were taken care of. Overall great experience and we will definitely be back.
We went to the Kitchen Step for News Eve and it was great. The menu was inventive with great wine or cocktail pairings. We are looking forward to going back for non-special occasions.
This place is a gem, one of the best spots in downtown. Great food, amazing and very attentive service, fair pricing and awesome cocktails.
Food and service was excellent. The corner we were seated in was a bit too noisy, but that was the only downside.
The food was amazing. We all left very full & happy! Our waitress, Tammy, was great....very friendly & answered all our questions about the menu, giving yummy recommendations. We will definitely be back!
From the moment we arrived, the service was excellent. We had reserved a table for six and when four of us arrived early, we planned to just sit at the bar and wait for the rest of our party and for the table to be ready. To our surprise, they seated us right away at a lovely table by a large window. Then, when the remainder of our party was running late, our wonderful server informed us the kitchen would be closing soon and allowed us to place orders for them ahead of time.
Besides the impeccable service, the food and drinks were awesome. Even the side order of toast was somehow better than the usual fair - thick, crusty slices of rustic bread with rich butter complimented our steak, eggs, chicken and waffles and fabulous cocktails.
What I'm really trying to say is that I'll be making a trip back to Kitchen Step soon and you should probably check it out for yourself, too!
We have dined at The Kitchen Step on numerous occasions and each time we have discovered a new, delicious menu item. Our server most recently, Tammy C., was extremely nice! She was very accommodating with special requests and her cocktail recommendation was delicious. She was by far the BEST. She made the brunch experience much more enjoyable by being so courteous and professional. My only complaint? Temperature was way too warm! Would highly recommend - but be sure to make a reservation or you will wait!
We really enjoyed this restaurant- very charming and quaint with excellent food and attentive service. The only suggestion is to enhance the wine stock. Only one type of Chardonnay was available despite having a few “by the bottles”on the wine list. Likewise for red; a bottle chosen and consumed and when another bottle was ordered we were told “sorry that was the only bottle so choose another red.” We’d go back but I do suggest a perfect dinner could have been delivered by a better stocked wine cellar.
LOVE kitchen step! Not our first time, and certainly won't be our last. We love it!! Best brunch in town with incredibly friendly staff. Thanks for a great meal and time, as always!
Reserved a table for an anniversary dinner and wound up with a small table right near the front window which was very cute. Although the menu seems small we left very full and satisfied. Already want to go back to try everything we didn't order.
Great menu, excellently prepared food...to the extent we made one of the snacks the very next night! Thank you!
It was pretty good. Servers were nice and helpful. Ambiance was lovely. Drinks were tasty. First course was yummy. Main course and dessert were so so.
This restaurant represents the best and the worst of the downtown JC gentrification. It is nice to have a place to go with a creative menu that is abreast of trends without being insufferable, but which is also accessible. On the other hand, a Bibb lettuce salad should not cost $14. People who think nothing of a small plate Bibb lettuce salad for $14 where five years previously, that price point for that item would have closed that restaurant in three months are who is moving to JC. If this is your crowd, you will fit right in.
Second time in a month and just as wonderful as our first visit. Found out they have BYOB on Tuesday so great for us winos.
Looking forward to our next meal.
The croissant French toast was to die for!
Food/cocktails were great - server was a little anxious.
Wait staff rushed us through the dinner.
Great menu, delicious food, fun drinks. Good spot for brunch, lunch and dinner.
