Kitchen Step JC
The Kitchen Step aspires to become an integral part of the local’s dining repertoire; a true ‘neighborhood bistro’ that is just as appropriate for an after-work drink as it is for a full-coursed dinner.
At The Kitchen Step, Chef Ryan DePersio will flex his modern American muscle against delivering a menu that regularly changes with the seasons and features the best of what local markets have to offer in regards to ingredients and flavor.

The staff could not have been nicer or more accommodating. I have dietary restrictions and the waitress, manager, and chef went out of their way to prepare something I could eat. The food was delicious.
One of the best meals I’ve had in a long time. The seasonal menu is so creative and interesting. Everything on the menu just works so well and tastes great. The burrata was incredible.
Always a treat! Great service, amazing food.
Food was very good -- interesting combinations and treatments. My scallops were excellent, and members of my party who had the chicken were very pleased. We ordered two of the small plates -- zucchini frites and chicken-fried cauliflower to share for appetizers and enjoyed them very much. Good flavors and the right amount of food to share for 4. Large portions of the soft ice cream (apricot-flavored -- yum!) were perfect for 2 to share. Management was more than gracious in accommodating our request for a quiet table. Will definitely go back. Lots of interesting items on the menu still to try.
Excellent, high quality and creative food. Everything on the menu is worth trying, including the creative cocktails. I recommend the chicken-fried mushrooms with green goddess dressing, the croissant French toast, and the cornbread for brunch. There is also a cocktail that involves flavored "snow", which is just as fun to look at as it is to drink. Service is always on point--everyone genuinely cares about the guest experience and goes above and beyond to accommodate their guests. We were gifted with a few complimentary snacks which made us feel valued, and allowed us to try more menu items. This is definitely my #1 brunch spot in Jersey City, and is also excellent for dinner.
Met a good friend for brunch and we were amazed at the quality of the food. The brunch menu was a fun variety of fresh garden options and new twists on standards such as waffles, pancakes and croissant French toast. The mixology cocktails are also amazing. We will be back.
Food, staff, ambiance! Best restaurant in Jersey City. Just an all around unbelievable experience.
Thanks to our server Tammy, manager Evan and of course The Chef!!! Nick!!
We’ll be back!
We were very happy and fully satisfied after our meal at Kitchen Step. The menu was a great change from the usual, the seasonal cocktails were delicious. We loved our super accommodating and knowledgeable server Tammy! Can’t wait to go back.
Overall a nice experience, with excellent service, but the food was not up to the standard of earlier visits. The gnocchi were tough and pretty tasteless and the fried chicken was buried in a sauce which made it soggy. Since we have been pleased with our food the other times we have been there, we will most likely give it another chance.
Great service, Fantastic service. Our 12+ time there
One of our favorite restaurants in the area, they never disappoint! Tammy was our server, she’s awesome. We’ll be back again!
Very fresh tasting, light dinner with decent wine selection.
Food too salty
Fun spot to meet, tasty choices, small plates to share, pleasant staff, vegetarian options, great price, photo is grilled cauliflower
My dad’s birthday
Excellent food, service, and ambiance. Food is fresh and is always prepped with a subtle flair.
We have been here 5 or 6 times and are never disappointed. Just delightful! Tuesday night is BYOB with no corkage fee so it's fun to bring our own wine.
Looking forward to our next dinner at Step Kitchen.
We went to Kitchen Step for dinner last Saturday night and it was terrific! The restaurant is small, but didn't get noisy while we were there (even though it was fairly full). The food was delicious and fresh, very interesting menu with lots of different options. Service was very friendly but not overbearing - our server was super knowledgeable about all of the menu items, and helped me select the perfect wine to pair with my meal. 10/10 will return, would love to try their brunch too!
Really great place, attentive staff, baby friendly. Amazing prices. Only not outstanding on noise because we were the noisy ones.
I booked The Kitchen Step for a graduation brunch for me and some close friends. The reservation was easy to make and I loved the reminder and confirmation that was emailed to me the day before. Some of my guests had difficulty finding parking in the area and the hostess helped us with multiple suggestions that they could try. Our waitress was extremely attentive and ensured that we had a great brunch(: The food was delicious and came out much quicker than we expected! We loved all our brunch cocktails as well! The portion sizes for drinks and plates was well worth what we paid for. The Kitchen Step was cozy and intimate for our small get-together. The interior is beautifully decorated and we got a lot of great pictures inside the venue. I would highly recommend The Kitchen Step to anyone looking for a nice place to get together for a reunion with friends - casual date spot - or even a fun work meeting! I can't wait to come back again!
Best in JC. Manager, Evan, and our server, Tammy, are the best in the business. Food is excellent - try the chicken breast and the pork chop - steak was also a hit. Salads were excellent (try the kale) and finish w any of the deserts . Wine list is excellent - we’ll be back
Amazing food and service! Some nice gluten free options too. Lovely weather to sit outside.
No air conditioning
Changed the menu - wasn’t to happy
We had an excellent meal at Kitchen Step for my husband's birthday! We had the wings, mac and cheese, bibb lettuce salad and the black bass - each dish was absolutely delicious and we would recommend all of them!
Food and staff are fabulous! Best restaurant in downtown JC!!
Amazing / good is great and service is better
Best restaurant in JC!!
Lovely neighborhood spot with a thoughtful menu & fun cocktails! Great for both dinner with a friend, or romance with someone special.
I had been to this establishment 4 years before, under a different identity or management, I'm not sure. I was not very pleased with the experience then. However, this time it was a great experience. The charming host immediately greeted us and led us to our table. The service was attentive, and the food was delicious. It made for a perfect birthday date with my wife.
Always great to eat here. Best food and best service. Tammy is a gem! Can't wait to go back.
Waitress was forgetful and it wasn’t busy. Maybe she was having an off day. Food was very good and one of us was vegan and they did a great job helping her accommodating.
Had been previously. Decided to return to treat a friend for their birthday. Was seated promptly. Katrina, our server was excellent...she explained gluten free and vegan options for one of our party. Food was delicious. Unique twist on Chicken and waffles, but they were quite good. Will return!
Kitchen Step is a casual bistro. but the food and service are top-notch. The cuisine is creative and beautifully prepared, and is mostly locally sourced. Among the small plates, the chicken-fried mushrooms provided a unique and deliciously savory taste treat, and the strawberry gaspacho was nuanced and most satisfying for a warm summer's evening. Our large plates included Barnegat scallops, with shaved carrots, radish, roasted peppers and bacon marmalade -- amazing! The 14-oz pork chop with swiss chard, parmigiano spaetzle, and morello cherry mostarda was thick, savory and moist -- cooked to perfection. Service was spot-on. Kitchen Step's indoor dining area is narrow storefront that is a little tight, but it's nicely decorated and ultimately, comfortable. (The restaurant also offers sidewalk seating in the warm months.) If you like delicious, creative cuisine served in a casual atmosphere, this is the place to go. It's among the best foodie destinations in the burgeoning Jersey City restaurant scene.
Our favorite restaurant in JC! Every entree is amazing. We especially love the hangar steak and branzino (when they have it)!
Delightful place. Very convenient to J City theaters new venue so it’s a really great evenings. Great wine list with many moderately priced choices that are quite nice. The drinks are unique and excellent. The chicken fried mushrooms were light and crispy with the mushroom liquid still inside. I had the mussels frites which were excellent. My wife had the soft shell crab appetizer which looked brilliant but was too good for me to get any. Topped with pistachio gelato made for a great dinner. Service was really attentive and helpful.
Wonderful. Favorite restaurant in JC
Fantastic food, great service, and always a pleasure to see what new delights have been added to the menu. The new chicken mushroom is TO DIE FOR!! I always enjoy the croissant french toast. The new maanger came over and introduced himself and was absolutely delightful! The chef provided us with a specially food that BEYOND amazing and delicious.
Excellent neighborhood gem that should be on everyone’s hit list. Have both brunched and dined here multiple times and have always left satisfied. Cocktails are also made well too.
So good. Tiny. Delicious.
Corey knows how to run a great place and this qualifies. JC needed a place like this. The food is great the servers professional and the overall vibe is great. Go.
