Kitchen (formerly known as Pops) is a classic American restaurant in the South End of Boston. The food was pretty good! Not great, but pretty good! Out server (check told me it was Deanna, but sometimes this are just whomever opened the ticket or printed it) was very kind, polite, and efficient. It was disappointing to get there and learn that they'd run out of puff pastry for the Beef Wellington.
We loved the food at Kitchen! We sat at the back of the restaurant, which was a bit dim and not a fantastic ambiance, but our brussels sprouts appetizer was great, the scallops and tuna entrees were wonderful, and all the desserts here are amazing! Entree portions aren't huge and wine/beer list is small, but the quality of the food was high.
First off, the reason I gave service only 3 stars was because it seemed as though our server, who provided great service under the circumstances. The circumstances being that it seemed she was the only server in the restaurant. She managed to maintain a very polite, professional, etc., manner it was just super slow and she seemed like she was in desperate need of a break, which again, appeared to be the result of her being the only server not because of her lacking abilities. The food it self was just alright, just not on par with its neighbors in terms of quality, especially for the price.
I have had a couple great experiences at Kitchen and the food is great. However, the service isn't. The hostess is unpleasant and the servers aren't amazing enough to want to go back. They do not give the impression that they would go out of their way to make it an excellent experience for their diners.
I've been to Kitchen during Dine Out Boston several times. It's always a great value as you get to choose off the main menu. The food is delicious and the waitstaff is always friendly and helpful. I recently dined in the back room (too cold for outside dining!) which was warm and cozy. Kitchen is a keeper.
Looking to start off a nice, relaxing weekend at the end of a long business trip and a late flight that got me home on Friday night, Kitchen sounded like just the spot for a nice late supper. Unfortunately, the food and the ambiance left me a bit perplexed and pretty disappointed.
The wine list was pretty interesting, with a nice selection of whites and light reds that compliment a menu that's heavy with seafood. I ordered the cod, which was served with savoy cabbage and Vermont bacon, and jumped right in to the entree with no appetizer. The portion of cod was very generous, but I'm afraid the flavor didn't match the size of the entree. The best way I can describe that dish was bland, bland, bland. The fish was cooked properly, but it lacked any interesting flavor--or any flavor at all, for that matter. The bacon added absolutely zip in the way of flavor, and I came across the occasional piece strewn about my cabbage, which was likewise pretty flavorless. While I try to stick with fish on Fridays in Lent, my penitential sacrifice for the season does not include giving up flavors.
My companion ordered the scallops, and he struggled through them. I had a bite, and found them to be overcooked, resembling scallop-flavored rubber bands. It's scallop season in New England, for crying out loud; it's such a pity to have encountered scallop golf-balls instead of the flavor of the season. Having had quite enough of Kitchen's kitchen, we skipped dessert and had a French press of coffee, which was at least tasty.
We sat in the back room by the window, which overlooked the most uninviting scene I've had the displeasure of seeing out of a restaurant window in a long time. I realize it's wintertime in Boston, and there's little that can be done, but really, does the back yard that we're looking at during dinner need to dotted with rubbish and furniture? If Kitchen is going to seat people by a picture window looking over an outdoor area, please at least clean it up.
Delicious food and great server. The clam chowder was different than any I had tried before, a must try. The restaurant back area with tables was too cold to enjoy so we asked to be moved inside and otherwise had no problems. Mushrooms in a glass is the best appetizer too!
We've eaten at Kitchen in the past for breakfast/brunch but not for dinner. So was happy to find that their dinners are very good too! Hubby and I went with another couple and all 4 of us ended up getting different entree and we all were very happy. Great meal, great waitress and an overall enjoyable evening. recommend it for dinner as well as breakfast!
We enjoyed our visit to The Kitchen. We went on a Sunday night and had the entire back room to ourselves. Our server was very attentive and refilled our waters constantly, even after we paid our bill. The food was delicious and there was a diverse enough menu to appeal to our entire group. I'd love to come back in the summer (we went in January) and take advantage of their outdoor seating.
There were 5 of us that went to Kitchen for my birthday. We all loved our meals. The portions were satisfying. They give you homemade chips in place of bread to start with and they were absolutely delicious. Unfortunately for any refill there is a charge- which is disappointing!
Music was great and aided to the experience. They play from a record player and you can see when they go to change the record. Loved this aspect!
The prices were a bit high for what you actually get- but I would still go back once in a while.

Went for Brunch, and it was absolutely amazing! We actually were early birds, and showed up just a few minutes prior to our 11am reservation. The staff was very accommodating, and welcomed us in to sit down, even though they had not opened for business yet.
To start, we had the donuts - delicious. I could have just had the raspberry sauce!
We split the Eggs in Purgatory, which was absolutely amazing. The eggs were perfectly cooked, and the sauce was spicy and flavorful. The waitress was nice enough to have the kitchen split the dish into two separate ramekins for us, to make it easier to share. The highlight however was the blueberry pancakes. They were expertly griddled, and loaded up with blueberries and real maple syrup.
Can't say enough about this gem!
I had a better experience during Restaurant week - this time the menu felt more limited (less Italian dishes). Starters felt more limited so we skipped. Shrimp risotto was just ok. Tonic water was flat. French press coffee was weak. Dessert menu heavy on diary side. Homemade donuts were still very good.
Have been to Kitchen several times before, really enjoyed it, and recommended it to friends. The menu previously had been based on classic recipes from famous chefs/cookbooks, with a good variety and interesting, well thought-out choices. Since my last visit, the menu has changed, and is now mostly seafood, with few alternatives if you're not a seafood fan. I had the burger, which sounded great, but was a large portion of ground meat mixed with bacon on a bun, and fries; heavy and greasy. No sides otherwise, no veggies at all, not much flavor, not very interesting. My fellow diners had the fish and chips. Very large portions, but again no veggies, heavy and starchy. It looks like the attention that had been previously paid to the menu and the execution of the food is lacking, and I won't be going back.
If you love oysters, like we do, this is the place. You can sit at the bar and have 6 for $8. And a nice glass of wine to go with it.
Or you can eat at a table, and choose from a small, but good menu .
Here's the other important thing, they know how to cook here! I am allergic to pepper- no problem, because the guys in the kitchen really do know how to cook. Not like so many places that will give you a bland dish, cause there's no pepper on it- or anything else to compensate for taste.
Wait staff is great, so is Andrew the bartender, who can discuss the wine choices with you.
Love the setting -- charming spot with a great bar. Not impressed with the food and service was marginal. Even though it was an early reservation and hardly anyone in the restaurant. Would recommend it for a drink with an appetizer or an after dinner drink, perhaps with dessert?
First time in a while eating in south end. Limited menu and little to no amenities. Service was good but felt rushed as they kept wanting to clear table because they want dining experience to be expedited to maximize table turns. No decaf coffee for my wife and only French press regular . Overall nice ambiance ok food but no reason to return as there are many other choices in south end
This is our go to place. Anyone comes into town, this is where we take them. We won't be doing that after tonight. We gave by been there in about 8 months but it has changed. Some food was under seasoned, some was a salt block. Not a fan of the new wine list. Not impressed with the various fish plates we had. Most had no pizazz. It's now "ok" where as it used to be superb. We are so bummed. This was our go to! Oh man. So sad.
Get your reservation called in early! Great food, good time at Kitchen. Friendly staff! New menu is balanced with lots a seafood selections. The lobster casserole was terrific, but get the garlic toast to go with it as you won't want to leave any of the broth behind. Our server was just the right amount of attentive and very nice. We waited at the bar until our table was ready and a server collected our drinks for us and delivered them to the table. Overall, a really good evening at kitchen. (ps: their mimosas at brunch are perfect)
