About Kitchen Istanbul

Welcome to Kitchen Istanbul,
Where the exotic centuries-old recipes meet with local ingredients to transform into unforgettable flavors that will make you come back for more. Owner and executive chef Emrah Kilicoglu pays close attention to what goes in the kitchen as well as on the restaurant floor. He personally visits each table to make sure that the customers get the ultimate Turkish dining experience where the customer is treated as a guest in his house.
Mr. Kilicoglu is not new to the San Francisco gastronomic scene: since March, 2012 he was the co-owner of Troya Clement and contributed to becoming a stable among Turkish restaurants in the Bay Area. He carefully crafted Kitchen Istanbul's menu to incorporate lots of traditional mezes (Turkish style appetizers), each with a distinct kick to represent a specific region in the Mediterranean area. Just a look at the main dishes will make your mouth water, no matter if you are a meat lover or a veggie lover.

The food here was amazing. Everything was absolutely delicious. We tried Turkish wine and were very impressed with it as well. You’d have to go some to out do this restaurant!

The lamb moussaka was to die for! Turkish coffee and baklava made a perfect duo to finish the meal.

Amazing amazing amazing food. I woke up thinking about the feta cigars. All the food we got was delicious and came to the table quickly. I got the Beyti for a meal which was my first time trying it - would absolutely get again. It was like a Mediterranean sushi roll: beef and lamb rolled into lavash bread topped with sweet red sauce.

Make a reservation for this place and you won’t regret.

Arrived for 8pm reservations and were promptly seated. Wine and appetizers came promptly..so far so good. Then it went downhill....my wife is a pescatarian. They had run out of the only salmon dish and only veggie dish. Atleast they should have mentioned it when we ordering appetizers. We left after the appetizers and went to another place.

Interesting spot amidst all the Asian restaurants on Clement. Enjoyed the large photos on the walls. The three of us went on a Sat. afternoon, and it was not too busy so the service was good. There were a couple of items for brunch, but it is a limited menu. The egg special was mostly tomato which was surprising, but edible. Best dish that was ordered was the hummus with walnuts and the pita bread. Lamb meatballs were dry, and the grain (?) salad my friend ordered was bland.

This is one of our favorite restaurants in SF. The owners are lovely people, as is the rest of the staff, and the food never disappoints. The use of local ingredients and high-quality meat puts Kitchen Istanbul above so many other restaurants that don't pay attention to the importance of this. The wine list is thoughtful, and features some wines from Turkey and Portugal which one doesn't typically see. Make sure to save room for dessert.

We had a couple of appetizers and the lamb as entree..Main concern for us was couple of our favorites were deep fried. We would have preferred grilled or baked..Food was true to Turkish roots and delicious. Overall a nice meal but did not get the wow factor. Also, we would prolly ask for dishes to be served with some gap as we felt a bit rushed.

We always have a great meal. The staff is friendly and the service is relaxed and not rushed. Our favorite is the trio of dips served with pita, but each dish we've tried, we enjoy. A neighborhood gem!

Great destination restaurant. Casual dining but excellent service and attention to detail you would find at a more formal fine dining restaurant. The food was excellent and the menu varied. Portion size was good; not too skimpy as some of the better restaurants can be. Dinner there made for a wonderful evening.

Had a tasty dinner at Kitchen Istanbul with a friend. Sat outside in side walk tables and watched the Friday night Clement Street parade of diversity wander by. Friendly and helpful wait staff make ordering easy, but menu is simple enough to manage on your own. Best brussel sprouts ever, fresh sharp arugula salad and chicken kebabs which melted in your mouth. Only thing we wished was more flavorful was the hummus!!!

we found kitchen istanbul through a yelp search for middle eastern restaurants. it is a nice little place, but I'm not sure we would return for the following reasons: the standard appetizers, such as hummus, baba muhammara, and haydari were not very well spiced. the hummus lacked garlic and tahini and the haydari was not nearly garlicky enough. I had the adana kebab and my husband had the moussaka, both of which suffered from similar problems. we've spent considerable time in both greece and turkey, and have friends from both places. we have eaten in many middle eastern restaurants, both here and overseas, as well as in people's homes, and have some idea of the authenticithy of the above dishes. your menu looked interesting, but it fell a bit short, even though, based on the ambiance and service, we wished it were better.

I've always wondered why bay area middle eastern restaurants don't seem to last and wonder if it's because the city and suburbs just doesn't support this type of food, if it isn't good enough to stand up against the very tough local competition, or if they fail due to the typical internal issues that plague many small businesses, esp. restaurants. I hope the kitchen istanbul cooks are not underspicing dishes because they assume americans will not like the more authentic versions of turkish/middle eastern food. not that this is absolutely essential, and if the training is adequate maybe it shouldn't matter, but I've always believed people who know the food and have grown up on it are more able to turn out the best versions of it.

kitchen istanbul was good, not great, but I think it's possible for it to be the latter. I wish them all the best and hope to give it another chance at a later date.

Made a last minute reso and was pleasantly surprised. Great service. Interesting/diverse menu. The roasted cauliflower with urfa spice was especially good. I don't need to go running back because i bought some urfa spice thereafter to make the dish at home, but I'd say it's worth trying. I wished I'd tried a few more items.

Been passing by Kitchen Istanbul, reading the menu and trying to get my courage to go in. First time experience was not disappointing. It was awkward going into an unknown alone and dropped most of my belongings on the floor while trying to fit in not noticed at my table and of course my lunch date was late, 2 wonderful gentlemen seated next to me recovered my belongings and were most kind to help setting me at ease and the relaxed mood. The service was immediate and gracious, not at all intruding while waiting. Not knowing what to order I took a stab at a couple of appetizers that turned out fabulous, with help from the waiter, and the lamb entree was fantastic. Food was fresh, lamb very tender and all was well prepared and spiced perfectly. Great experience, will be a regular!

We found this to be a delightful restaurant. The decor is spare but elegant. Unlike many restaurants, it was quiet enough to hear the other people at our table when we were there. The menu had a lovely array of Turkish and middle eastern meats and seafood dishes. They also offered a variety of sides such as roasted cauliflower, zucchini cakes, and crispy brussels sprouts, and chickpeas that satisfied vegetarians and those trying to reduce their meat intake. The wild caught Salmon from the Pacific Northwest was perfectly cooked, and delicious. The vegetable Moussaka was excellent. the wait staff was pleasant and attentive, but not overbearing. We look forward to going back!

My husband I enjoyed the Brussels sprouts and lentil soup and also shared the lamb kabobs. While the kabobs were more medium than Med-rare as requested, they were still moist and flavorful.
We would definitely try again.

Amazing food and service. Went with 10 for my dad birthday and it was a wonderful experience. They even helped to close doors and make space for our new born baby and her stroller! Sometimes I forget just how good Kitchen Istanbul is. Actually, I like this place better than Kokkari. The spicing here is more nuanced and the pricing is much more affordable. Get the cauliflower appetizer and see what I mean about subtle spicing. And the chicken kebob main course is great.

Great to have Turkish (similar to Greek) food in this 'hood. Long list of interesting mezes, mostly veggie, and a nice range of copious mains as well. Food was tasty and well-priced, but the wine list was unfortunately pricey. Service was impeccable, and the ambiance pleasant. Will go back when I am in the area.
