The star of the evening was the appetizer, scallops with bacon. It went downhill from there. I ordered the pasta and my wife had the pork belly. Both were not good and the service was really slow on a not too busy night.
A friend, my wife, and I really enjoyed this place. Food and service were first rate. I think the noise level was a bit high, but it didn't really interfere much with talking but could have interfered if it was just a couple wanting a sort of quiet evening out. This was our first visit so I couldn't select too many things from the list of things that would be recommended. More visits in the future, for sure.
All of our dinners were delicious. For me the citrus note in the burrata and beet salad was phenomenal, especially with the crunch from the toasty almonds. I chose the short rib and gnocchi. I expected more pasta than beef, but was pleasantly surprised. The blood orange sorbet for dessert was the perfect finish.
We went to kitchen 4140 for dinner and had a great meal from start to finish. The ahi appetizer was fantastic, a beautiful presentation and just the right touch of sauces to accommodate and not over power. The froi gra was amazing! Anytime we have a chance to enjoy something out of the ordinary we go for it! the beet salad was beautiful with just the right amount of ingredients to compliment eachother and not over whelming. Knowing that they use fresh ingredients from their own garden makes each beet and each tomatoe that much more hand cared for delicious and of course fresh! the ribeye in duck fat, such great flavor! Cooked to perfection and a wonderful crust on the outside made a delicious juicy inside. Not only was the food amazing the service staff were great. Everyone from the host to the server to the chef! Really cool vibe here we will be back!
My boyfriend and I went there on a whim last Saturday night. I got the gnocchi and he got the short ribs! Both were delicious... I think we both like the gnocchi better though! We got great suggestions from the waiters and things came out quickly! Loved the brussels sprouts! The apple and strawberry crisp/cobbler was delicious as well!
Enjoyed our dinner and appetizers, we shared the biggest steak I have ever seen in a restaurant. It was pretty loud inside though, and as we are on the plus side of 60, and appeared to be the oldest people there, we had trouble hearing each other through the noise.
We had a really nice lunch for my friend's birthday. I should have requested to sit outside on the patio in my reservation because the patio has great ambiance and it was such a nice day. There were no seats left outside when we got there. The service was good and they brought my friend a delicious dessert for her birthday. Really sweet.
Food was absolutely delicious!! Portions were huge compared to other fine dining. Try the short rib. Definitely coming back for more!
The Brussels sprout appetizer was the best I've had (and I order them often). All four of us were very pleased with our delicious and well-presented dinners. Unexpected in a location right on Morena Blvd. You forget that as soon as you sit down.

Used to love this place but the servers are not responsive - have to ask for everything - refill on water glass. The food is good but the service is lacking and that's a shame. Step it up and I'll be back.
Considered one of my favorite places for wonderfully plated meals and great service. The garden tables are surrounded by "home" grown veggies which emulates sitting at a farm with friends and family. The interior dining is eclectic and rustic at the same time. The steaks are cooked to perfection and the vegetables are always fresh and flavorful. Can't get enough of this restaurant. Always check the chalk board for the daily specials!
Absolutely great. Food delicious and reasonably priced. Our server was fun and dealt with us perfectly. We love the atmosphere-laid back New York. It was our second time in 1 week-loved it.
I've been here before for brunch and I wasn't disappointed on my second visit. The loaded Bloody Mary was what really sent me up there but the chicken fried steak was perfect!!
This restaurant has amazing food. I have been here multiple times, mainly for dinner and once for brunch. Their food is always full of flavor and they always have a variety of daily specials to choose from. Our favorite dish is their ribeye. I also love their Brussel sprouts and their chocolate brownie. The only negative I have to say about this place is their service is hit or miss. Sometimes the service is pretty good and other times like last night the server seems clueless and distracted. Overall love this place.. Will continue to come here and recommend others to try it.

Food was great as usual for this place, decor and ambiance was very enjoyable again, as usual. Prices seem like they've gone up though, used to be one of the best places with dishes around and under $30 but seems like there's only a few dishes under $30 on the menu now. Even with the price increase, this place is still one of the tastiest places in San Diego and worth the trip!
The food had memorable flavor and combinations. We tried 5 dishes and brussell sprouts and each one was really good. Loved the setting too.

We have used the 'passport card' in the past. Since they don't honor the card anymore, I think it should be stated somewhere on the menu, just out of courtesy.
Hidden restaurant with much to offer. Locally grown food which adds to the taste and health benefits of eating here. Outdoor space is very nice and the water they offer is amazing and refreshing. Typically I get the sandwiches which are large enough portions with freshly made ketchup for the fries. Lunch is much more affordable than dinner.
I had such high hopes for this place. The pictures and reviews were so enticing that my best friend and I just had to see for ourselves. It is located a little past Costco if you are driving towards the 5 fwy. It is right next to the lamp and carpet stores. Also, there is a big orange sign pointing to the restaurant so there's no reason to get lost. Parking is street.
Ambiance is okay. It didn't look like it's fine-dining, but more like casual-dining with hipster food trying to pass as fine-dining. Our server was nice. Not sure if it was just the time (Saturday 7pm), but I'm sure he could've been more engaging. Checked on us a couple of times, but more on that later.
So we finally got our food. Grilled cheese with tomato soup was really bad. It had bleu cheese. BLEU CHEESE. Only had a bite and I was done. The tomato soup was alright. The server saw that we didn't finish it but he also didn't feel bad that we didn't enjoy our food. Brussel sprouts was cooked with vinaigrette and lamb chops, as written in the description. However, it wasn't very tasty. Or maybe I just have an acquired taste. Lastly, we got the crispy skin salmon. It was the only dish we finished. It was so tasty, especially the black garlic.
Overall, nice place and good ambiance. The food didn't live up to par.
This place continues to have good potential, but we're swearing it off. Excellent short ribs this time, mediocre steak and pasta. We have developed a few gripes, but this is the one that does it, because we find it dishonest: specials cost almost 2x as much as average menu items, and prices aren't revealed. Worthy of a tourist trap. $60 special last night; $45 for a special pasta last time that wasn't even very good. If you write the special on the board, you can write the price. Otherwise: kitchen - not waitpeople- is slow, time from order to table too long. Much of the food is tasty, but heavy handed with hot spice and there's always something stick-sweet on the plate that doesn't need to be there.
The outdoor patio is so cute! We ate dinner surrounded by a beautiful herb garden! The service was great and the food is delicious. I had the short ribs and my husband got the ribeye. Both dishes were fantastic and cooked to perfection. This is definitely a neighborhood gem!

Saw the beer and wine pairing on the menu. After asking our I waiter about I chose this option and was pleased. Let. Would recommend this to beer fans the selections we well done.
Lunch, mid-week. Not too busy and service was very good - friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. Scallops were terrific as was Thai shrimp. Coconut bread pudding serving was quite large tho not as coconut tasting as we hoped for since the bread was soaked in coconut milk.
Great service, good food. We had charcuterie plate, burger and beet salad. Expensive but good. Nothing that I will dream about BUT will probably go back to try new dishes.
Way overpriced for a place on Morena
While the prices seem to increase substantially every time I go here, I love the combinations of flavors that the kitchen puts together on the plate. Just wish it was a little more affordable.
I have been a long time Sunday brunch fan and only just recently made it out for dinner. It's quite a bit pricier than the brunch menu but worth every penny. We started off with the polpette and Spanish chicken. They were both great but the polpette.... Everyone should have this. They were like fried potato balls with white truffle oil, garnished with a light tomato sauce and a crostini with a soft cheese. Yum. Between the three of us we drooled over our entrees: pork belly, steak special, short ribs. I'm a super fan of polenta and the crispy polenta on the side is fabulous. After all of that food we wanted to just see the dessert menu so that we could save room for next time. But the coconut brioche bread pudding was to hard to pass up so we made room. This is not a dessert for one! It's enough for 3-4! And like all the rest
Of the food, was perfect.
The service is no less perfect. Scotty was ours for the night and was a great compliment to our evening.
Plan to eat slowly. You'll want to savor every bite.
First time diners. Tried the chefs choice menu which was $80/pp. Steep for a place with two $ signs; it was $65 w/o wine. i actually thought it was $80/couple for a three course meal haha. First course came out, and we were surprised to see one appetizer for the both of us. This dish was not on the menu. Shrimp was over cooked, but the yummy variety of wild mushrooms (esp the morsels), made up for it. Second entree came out which was a whole deep fried branzino with risotto and amazing ferns. This was on the menu board. Was excellent, though in the back of our minds, we were still wondering why we were being served one course (plate) to share. What if we were not comfortable enough to share ? My husband was bummed it was fried fish for the price we were paying. Third entree came out, and it was the aged steak. Again, one small steak to share. It came with a veal reduction sauce which tasted like chocolate -- was interestingly delicious. The server was very nice and was good about following up; he was also kind enough to offer me tasting portions of wine, as I indulged in the $65/chefs choice. My husband was wined-out after being served 3 glasses of wine (one for each course). We ordered dessert which cost us an extra $9, a traditional creme brûlée, which was ordinary. And then came a glass of cherry, which we couldn't manage to finish. All in all, I think the price is very expensive for what we were served. With tip, we paid $191 for two people and left full, but regretful of the price we paid. Wish we were a little more aware of what to expect from this type of menu, or maybe we just wish it wasn't as expensive. Or maybe w expected too much since we are foodies. BUT! I'd still go back; next time I'll order from the regular menu. Oh, and I love the pistachios!

My companion's ahi salad looked delicious with plenty of perfectly seared tuna. I had the fish and chips, which was lightly battered and fried, with a slight tang of mustard in the batter. The dipping sauces for the fish were fantastic, and while the fries were also very good with the perfect amount of coarse salt I really couldn't eat many.
Servings were ample, and my friend had to take half her salad home while I had to assume the fries wouldn't travel well....tho I subsequently wished I had tried.
Great selection of San Diego's excellent craft beers.
Lots of variety on the menu that made choosing difficult ,but which means I have plenty to look forward to on a return visit.
We have been to Kitchen 4140 several times and have always enjoyed the experience immensely. Four or five stars across the board. So we had high hopes when we made our reservation for Mother's Day brunch. Unfortunately the top-shelf experience we have come to expect from Kitchen 4140 was not to be.
We specifically requested an outside table when we made the reservation and repeated the request when the reservation was confirmed. When we arrived, however, the hostess informed us that the outside tables were all reserved for larger parties so we would have to sit inside. No “gee I'm sorry,” no “would you like to wait for an outside table?” just in effect, “tough s***, you're sitting inside.” Easily one of the five rudest and least welcoming greetings I have received at any restaurant. And inside is LOUD! Not too surprising as there's not a soft surface in the place, but that doesn't make it any less unpleasant. As the room filled and people couldn't hear their companions over the other diners and din from the kitchen everybody talked louder and well, you get the picture. One star for ambiance.
The service was pretty good. We received our drinks and food promptly, but we always got the feeling the waiter would rather be doing anything else.
The food is the reason to go to Kitchen 4140 and on that they didn't disappoint. We had the beef hash, the Kitchen BEAST and the red velvet waffles and everything was superb. My compliments.
In sum, go to Kitchen 4140 and expect a great meal and a wonderful time IF you sit outside. When you make your reservation, don't say, “outside please,” or “prefer outside” or anything so polite. Go with “outside or forget it.” There's a world of difference between inside and outside and your really, really don't want inside, plus then you'll be using language the hostess understands. We'll be back because our previous experiences were so enjoyable, but had this been our first visit you would never see us there again.
When I gave our waiter the passport card he informed me the restaurant did not accept Passport as of this past Monday. It was still carried as a member on the Passport web site
My fiance and I had been wanting to check this place out for a while so I made reservations for sunday brunch. Let me start by saying that the food and drinks were fantastic. We split their chicken fried steak and surf & turf benedict. We also tried a side of their lamb bacon. She got a mimosa and I got the house bloody mary. Again all great!
The service is what was a bummer. Being our first time there, I didn't know they had another option for a bloody mary so while the one I got was great, it was not the same one everyone else had who was dining there. I would have hoped that the waiter would have informed me there was a special. Ultimately the worst part was that it took 25 minutes to get our drinks after ordering them. No real explanation for why it took them so long. Finally they gave us the wrong check at the end (luckily we caught it, otherwise they would have been out an extra $40). This may seem like a small thing, but it just shows that the staff do not necessarily pay attention to the details. The waiter had literately just boxed our leftovers and gave us a check without the dishes he just boxed up.
So that, coupled with the drinks, soured the experience some. Overall we would go back again though, as the food was spectacular and isn't that the real reason you go out anyways?
Food was quite good, has even improved over fine earlier years, service was pleasant, dinner was very slow coming out of kitchen. One big complaint: the pasta special had the unannounced price of $45. This was $10-15 more than the price of other entrees. For the pasta! True, it had some good seafood in it, but this is a trick of a tourist trap and not worthy of this otherwise very nice and unpretentious neighborhood restaurant.
