KINGFISH Ratings and Reviews
We chose Kingfish for our small family reunion, and we all agreed our food was superb! The location is beautiful and we felt well taken care of by our server. Everything was hot, delicious and just as we ordered it. Thank you Kingfish, for making our night very special.
This has always been our go-to restaurant in San Mateo. They’ve redecorated a bit and some of the booths are gone and they opened up the bar area. Didn’t have much time to check it all out, though. I prefer the downstairs area best; upstairs was a bit chilly and the open layout does contribute to a higher noise level, but still nicely decorated and spacious. Overall a really good place to meet and enjoy good food from an interesting menu.
The restaurant was cold.. the table we had, w/ the big chairs - that we love - was too small for the 4 of us. they larger chairs need to have a longer table. Our food was pretty good other than my friend having to send back her twice cooked potato as it was cold inside. even the 2nd time it was cold and cheese not melted. they need to bake them, not microwave them. the lemonade chicken was good, but no taste of lemon - as we had hoped, and it was not fried, it was more like deep fried. the beignets were good but seemed bit heavy and doughy.
The blood orange margaritas were good, but way too much ice - the whole glass was full of ice. The coffee was bitter, and luke warm, the cream was brought it a coffee cup - odd and hard to put in. the Splenda was crystalized/hard, so had to tell them to take it off the table. for as nice of a place that it is, and the cost, we should not have to ask for a steak knife for our steaks... nor have all the above complaints.
Horrific Service. If you value service in anyway. DO NOT GO HERE. The are clearly constantly short staffed. Served by one of the owners who was absolutely clueless on how to wait tables. 10 minutes for some draft beers and after we ordered all our food at one time she asked us if we wanted to order more. I told her she was clearly confused and go back and review her tickets. Will NEVER go back to this place and recommend others NOT go here
Very good food. We ordered the Jerobaum —a platter of 6 raw oysters, 3 huge shrimp, tuna poke and Crab roll. Crab roll was not good as it was not sushi rice and the rice tasted old. Everything else on the platter was excellent. Also ordered the warm Napa cabbage (loved it) and the fried calamari (very good).
By far one of the worst dinners I’ve had. Went with a couple of friends, before leaving for a vacation. Our server was great but the food that came out of the kitchen was not only bland but the food runner does not know anything. He brought pork belly tacos and said “here’s your octupos” (which was our order) got the server and she said she will have the kitchen make an octupos. A few minutes later our entrees came out, my friend ordered Jambalaya, no sausage. It has sausage when it was served. They said they will make another one, my friend refused and refused to eat at all coz he was unhappy with the whole experience. Our server was very apologetic but she wasn’t the one cooking in the kitchen. I guess in short, they might need a chef that will make sure all the food that came out is as ordered.
It was one of the worst dining experiences I've had in a long time. Sat down , waitress took our drink order. 10 mins passed. She came back to take our food order ( still no drinks). There was 4 of us- we ordered 1 appetizer to share. Then 2 of us ordered salads and all 4 ordered entrees. 10 or 15 mins past. Salads came (still no cocktails). We asked why the salads came out before the appetizers. 2nd waiter said he would make sure he pace our entrees. Drinks came. Took a bite of my blue cheese wedge salad and tasted green onion along with strange flavors. I realized my blue cheese wedge with bacon and tomato was actually a wedge drenched in Italian dressing, topped with blue cheese dressing , bacon (i think) and green onion.(????). Waitress finally returned and we told her about the salad- wasn't to apologetic. Asked if we wanted another - at that point - we said we would pass. We ate are shared appetizer. She cleared our plates and returned with 1 steak knife. (2 ppl ordered steak). Entrees came. All 4 were mediocre at best. We ordered dessert, beignets which should be light, gluffy and filled with air. These tastes like bad donut holes, very doughy. The second dessert was banana fosters. Mind you, we had to ask her for plates, since we were sharing, she returned with 4 cup saucers as our plates. All in all it was an awful experience. All the tables around us were experiencing the same thing.
I took my Dad here for his birthday. I brought my children they are older but they do have a great kids menu for smaller kids and bigger kids. The Service was great and the food was outstanding. Cocktails was great. Our waiter was so sweet She did a amazing job ensuring we got everything we needed she was great with the kids have her as our waiter was a added bonus to the already great experience we were having at kingfish. I will be going back!
This place is dirty. While waiting 15 minutes to be greater, we saw 2 COCKROACHES crawling around the oyster bar. Bunch of fruit flies flying around.
Food crumbs in the table crevasses.
Kingfish tries to look good on the outside, yet fail to get good staffing. Management is a bust. Food is bland and overall a filthy restaurant with filthy restrooms.
We will not return ever. We don't want to get sick.
My family and I had a reservation and got into kingfish at around 6:30 pm on a Saturday. We were placed at a table far to big for our party. The service was terrible and we received our utensils, drinks and appetizers in a haphazard manner. The waitresss constantly forgot things that we asked for because of how many tables she was staffed on (extra waters, sodas, appetizers, etc.). When the food finally arrived (after 80 or so minutes of waiting) it was average at best and not as hot as it should be. None of my family members, or I will ever eat here again.
This place has the worse service ever. Especially considering the price for the food, it is just horrible. We were seated for 20 minutes and no one came over to say "give me a minute" or to take an order. They were two waitresses in the area waiting on the other tables around us. Had to get the hostess and instead of sending a waitress over, she wanted us to pack up and move to the upstairs dining area with our two kids and their car seats. Service throughout didn't get any better. The servers decided to have a 10 minute huddle while we were waiting for refills for our drinks and other items. Will never go back to this place. 2nd time with horrible service, tried to give them another chance and it was the same thing. To top it off, the food isn't that great. Never again
We arrived early for our reservation and was seated quickly. We tried ordering beer and was told there was none. Some sort of problem. That was very disappointing. My sister said the bathrooms were disgusting. Maybe a little more care on that.
Overall the food was very good. All the plates were good enough to order again or even recommend. I was there for my birthday and the waitress knew it but no candle and no complimentary dessert. But even a candle would have been appreciated. Just a minor thing. I'll be back.
We were not served even water until one hour after being seated. In fact, we had to call the waiter and ask for taking orders and giving water after an hour. One main course was missed off the list, and served after 20 minutes of serving others at the table. Overall bad experience.
We have been to Kingfish before and have always enjoyed it. My husband & I were celebrating our 27th wedding anniversary and picked KingFish for our date night dinner. Our reservations were for 7:15 but we arrived at 6:55, the hostess was able to seat us which we were happy about. Our waiter Luis greeted us right away, so far so good, right? We placed an order for our cocktails, Luis came right back (before we even got our cocktails) to take our order. We both ordered a salad then our entrée. My salad came out pretty quickly, but we waited on my husbands. When the runner brought my husbands salad I asked for fresh cracked pepper for my wedge salad, he pointed to the salt & pepper shakers on the table. We were enjoying our salads and our cocktail when our entrées came. Luis put them down and walked away, neither of us was even half way done with our salads. Both entrees sat there getting cold. Our dinners were both good but I'm sure would have been excellent if they would have been warmer. Once we were done, Luis cleared our plates and brought us the bill. I looked at my watch, it was 7:28. To say we were annoyed was an understatement. Our "date night" dinner was all of 33 minutes & $130.00. I guess if you are looking for a quick dinner this is your place but not good if you want to sit longer than 33 minutes.
I used to love this place. My husband and I would go for dinners or hang out for weekend lunch. We even had our rehearsal dinner there. In time we got a little bored with the menu and parking got harder, so we went other places. But we went back earlier this week. It was awful. I've seen some decor changes over the years but now they've totally stripped all of the New Orleans artwork out and changed the booths and tables. It's not attractive and it's as boring as every other place now. Actually moreso. And the "rustic" tables just look crappy. And it was dead. I'm used to seeing this place busy no matter when it's open. They're not even open for lunch anymore, it seems.
But what was really disappointing was the food. The seafood bar was closed the night we were there. Why?? So no seafood dishes or apps, which, honestly, are the best things at this place. They couldn't even make taro chips & guac because the guy at the bar makes the chips I guess. The main menu hasn't changed much. Still the same old stuff they've had for years. They used to have good, interesting things like a sweet corn ravioli and salmon tartare, but they didn't last long. The things that have lasted too long are the skirt steak (too sweet), the fried chicken, and all the other boring entrees.
So I tried the fish tacos because it's a new dish from one of their chefs. I was sorely disappointed. The fish nor the batter were seasoned at all, but the condiments were spicy, so you got something that was both bland and spicy. I mean, the fish was so bland it stood out. And 2 tiny chunks of mango wasn't enough since they specifically said it had mango salsa. And the prices are steep for what you get. So alas, we will not be hurrying back any day soon.
Our family dined at Kingfish on a Saturday evening.
Ambiance: The upstairs room with the bar in it was extremely dark. The recessed lighting was off, and it appears there is an issue because there was an IKEA-looking lamp plugged into the corner of the room. That along with the chandelier and outside street lamps were the only source of light. I used the flashlight of my phone and had it pointing into a glass of water to provide some lighting for our table.
Service: Our waitress, Mackenzie, was great, but she didn't seem to have the support she needed to provide excellent service. We saw 1 other waiter on the floor serving 1 table, and our waitress seemed to have all the other tables? Made no sense how overwhelmed she was. Food also came at different times, and the time ranges were very extreme. The service was terrible, but it was not due to our server's incompetence. In fact, she was very apologetic for everything, and she did her best with what she had.
It was an extremely evening, there either was no AC, or it was broken. We sweat through our whole meal. At first they tried to seat us upstairs next be a big party (plus way hotter upstairs) but we asked to be seated downstairs because it was our Anniversary and we didn't want to have to shout over each other to have a conversation. Our food was mediocre. I order the halibut, but it came out over cooked and dry. We had 2 round of drinks, an appetizer and 2 entrees. We were done with everything in 35 minutes.....
Ate here on a hot evening hoping to escape the heat. Unfortunately their air conditioner was only partially working so did not get the relief we were hoping for. Food itself was good and we enjoyed a nice cold glass of beer to go with it. My husband had the fish tacos which were very good but a a bit spicier than he would have liked. I had the crab cocktail and a salad. The crab cocktail was good but I was envisioning some crab legs or chunks of fresh crab. Instead they formed fresh crab, veggies, mayo and spices into a cold cake and called it a cocktail. Over all we enjoyed the meal and will return again.
OK> The air conditioner did not work so the gal tried to seat us upstairs which was unacceptable. She finally took us downstairs. They did not have a blender for a blended Margarita, They have 2 Tacos on the menu and they were out of one. We got the others. They did not have a dessert we wanted so we got something else. They did not have. Decaf coffee???? Very strange. I called the next day and told them about our experience. I have never done this in my life. They said they are struggling. The gal told me she was very sorry but never offered me free drinks or whatever. It use to be so wonderful. I have been there many times. Had my Son's engagement party there in 2009. I guess they are having problems. BUT the server and the gal that seated us did not seem to care!!! I ask the servicer when he brought be the regular coffee if I got a discount. I was just kidding and he was quite rude. So needless to say it was very interesting. My sister in law and I just laughed it off. BUT I paid good money and it was just very sad. There are many restaurants out there NOW so much to choose from so it is not a problem.
We had great service and a delicious meal, from apps to entrees to dessert! Crab poppers, awesome! Fresh cod and halibut, devine! Beignet with chocolate dipping sauce, amazing! We were lucky it was a slow Saturday night, had longer wait for service in the past. Still a great place to try, you won't be disappointed.
My first time there, was great food and service was perfect! I would diffenitly bring others and recommend. Two things I would give 2 or 3 stars... Restroom was dirty, and I would have liked to have a glass of wine, but did not want to order a whole bottle. Maybe more of a glass selection would be nice. However.... My meal and margarita was fantastic!
We were celebrating our Anniversary and had mentioned it to the hostess. We were escorted to a table for two on the main walkway upstairs, with many open tables for four that were by the windows. I wanted to ask for another table, but unfortunately stayed quiet as we were only a twosome. Thought for a special occasion and a reservation, we would have a better table.
There was a large party that was being seated next to us and as soon as the guests arrived, the guests started dragging chairs around, swapping chairs with other tables constantly passing our table with the dragging of chairs. There was no input or interference from employees. Our waiter was kind but very overworked. I had ordered my meat well done and it came medium rare, and was brought back to the kitchen. My husband sat there with his meal for a good 15 minutes until I was able to catch our waiters attention and have her check on my food. The meat was cooked perfectly but the fries were cold. My husbands food was cold as he was being a gentleman and waiting to eat together. Beignets which had been excellent in the past ad we were so looking forward to, were cool, very little powdered sugar and were a let down. Having enjoyed Kingfish in the past and wanting a fun Anniversary dinner, we can say that our dining experience was a huge disappointment.
We have been many times so this might just have. Even an off night... One of the meals was the club sandwich. We asked for it to be dairy free and we're told that all the bread has butter in it. Served it as a lettuce wrap which would have been okay except the sandwich was horrible.
