The food was absolutely amazing. Highly recommend getting multiple plates to share. Some plates were rather on the salty side though. The only thing was the service. They asked to clear our plates when our hands were still eating out of our plates, which was rather rude. They weren't even using the tables next to us so it wasn't as if they needed our table. Otherwise I definitely recommend, but maybe just make it clear if people are still eating not to ask whether you can clear their plates.
Each trip to Kindred has been fantastic. The food is delicious (highly recommend the crispy oysters and ANY of their seasonal salads), the servers are warm and attentive, and the decor is too cute. Always a delight!
My parents, brother and I had a really nice time at our visit this past weekend. The starters were fresh & interesting, with the beef tartar & the tuna crudo as stand-outs. The 3 different homemade pastas were fabulous. We also enjoyed 2 different cocktails, which were very good! I would highly recommend this place for a special occasion, or for foodies in general.
We celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary at Kindred on Dec 1. It was fun to see so many friends during Christmas in Davidson, and the food and service are always perfect!
Kindred was a disappointment. In spite of making reservations on Open Table several weeks in advance, we were seated at a table with no overhead lighting across the bathroom and next to the bussing station. We ordered 6 plates to sample the menu. The food was good but not deserving of the local hype or a James Beard award. Three out of the six dishes were too salty. The birthday cake was served beautifully but tasted like a grocery store cake. It was odd that sliced bread was served at the end of the meal with the check and not with the 2 pasta dishes.
I would be hard-pressed to visit again.
This is a place where you can try many plates, many inventive all are delicious. The cocktail menu is excellent also. Servers are knowledgable and friendly. The hype is well-deserved!
The experience was truly exceptional. Kindred not only met but fully exceeded my fairly lofty expectations. Highly recommended!
One of the rare restaurants in the Charlotte area that gets it right without trying too hard - from the excellent cocktails served in attractive glassware, unobtrusive but tentative service, casual yet elegant ambience, and complex and flavorful food. My only wish is that they'd offer a few more dishes that are lighter and brighter in texture and flavor.
Good food but way too pricey for portion sizes!!!!!!!
The dishes were unique and very tasty but overall there were too many ingredients:flavors in each dish. There were no "clean" dishes to choose from...Nouvelle Southern cuisine (heavy food but using fresh and non-traditional ingredients ).
First review to ever write on anything or any product. Was excited to drive from Charlotte to dine here but highly disappointed. IPA beer to start was fruity, not good. Cocktail from bar not tasty. Bread and butter was actually very tasty. The plates with scallops, ravioli, and brussel sprouts were not good at all. The tartar was actually fairly good. So for the price $$$, I would not recommend. Will not be back.
Amazing as always!! Definitely one of my favorites!
Food was great! Our waitress was awesome and very knowledgeable about the menu, she also read up well as far as giving us time to eat and enjoy! We did not feel rushed :)
The food was tasty. The wait staff was knowledgeable and helpful. 2 in our party had allergies and the staff were quick to offer suggestions to accommodate them.
This was my first visit to Kindred and it was well worth the trip. The food selection was unique in the aspect everyone selects various "pre-entre" dishes to share giving everyone an opportunity to taste the chef's various preparations. The pasta dishes arrive last to round out the meal.
Some of the food items were misses, but most of the food was absolutely delicious! The only thing I really did not like was the charcoal broccolini, but the server replaced it with another small plate with no hassle. The milkbread was really good and the milkbread cinnamon roll is a must! The best part of the experience was the vibe and decor and the handcrafted cocktails.
Our double-date night at Kindred satisfied on all levels. We ate on the side patio, which is lovely. Our knowledgeable and friendly server offered helpful suggestions about timing and combining certain dishes. We're repeat customers and plan to continue returning.
Always look forward to dinner at Kindred! Such great food. Every dish was excellent.
The new menu is heavy on unusual exotics For two of us that was fine but one person couldn't find anything conventional. Not everyone enjoys a nouvelle cuisine exclusively . Most importantly all of the dishes we had( eight in total) were oversalted - a popular trend but really one that over powers versus enhances the flavors.
The quality is on par with the price. Great place for dinner!
Loved the creative menu & reasonably sized portions.
The food was different than most restaurants, but not necessarily better. We had fresh homemade pickles as an appetizer and they were drenched in strong vinegar and beef tartare which was delicious. Milk bread was served in the form of a giant yeast roll. The other dishes were served tapas style and included, rigatoni, triggerfish and scallop pasta dish. None of the tapas entrees were were excellent, just different. The noise level was incredibly loud as the result of packing too many people in a tight space. The wait staff was courteous and efficient. It was an experience, but not one that will be repeated.
I decided to take my wife out to a new, exciting place for her birthday. I decided to give Kindred a try after reading the reviews it received. We were not disappointed. The food was extraordinary, somewhat unique and reasonably priced. The service was superb. In fact, we were served by several people, including our primary server. Each was sincere and dutiful. One of the people that cared for us asked if we had any dietary preferences even before we had an opportunity to look at our menus. When I explained that I was a "pescetarian" he took my menu from me and returned it with every item that was suitable for my dining pleasure identified and those that were not marked off. This is a small plate dining experience, so make certain to try 4-5 items. We selected 4 and it was sufficient.
Original, creative experience. Worth traveling to but probably won't frequently.
This is my third visit to Kindred spread out from their opening time to now. I respect their restoration of an old building and their part in revitalizing downtown Davidson as a long time (20 plus years) resident. I am also an experienced cook and enjoy new venues and restaurants. Kindred continues to disappoint me and I have accepted this is just not the style for me beyond grabbing a drink before going elsewhere for dinner. I find the food too salty, my beverage glasses - water or wine sits empty on the table usually twice during the meal all times I have been there, the atmosphere downright loud and not "energetic" as your website says and the food not something I personally enjoy. All of these things could have been improved since the opening.
We enjoyed excellent food and service. Definitely worth the drive from Charlotte.
This was our first visit to Kindred for my husband's birthday, and it did not disappoint! We had recently caught the PBS special "Moveable Feast" featuring Kindred and were thrilled to see they used fresh ingredients from local vendors. We must have ordered at least 10 dishes and we shared everything. The food was delicious and the servings big enough to share but not overwhelming. Our server, Jules, partnered our entrees and paced everything to come out perfectly. Great wine recommendations as well. Oh, and the birthday cake was also spectacular! This was not just a dinner out but an amazing dining experience!!
Very fun foodie environment. They were super accommodating to my celiac issue. Very enjoyable!
So this restaurant is very talked about. We are new to the area and were eager to try it. It's small plates of a variety of very different tastes. I think now that we've been, we know now not to just order what sounds good, but think of how it would all fit together. We learned that otherwise, you end up with a varied mix of food that may not necessarily complement each plate, leading to a mixed feeling upon completion. Kind of when you go to a buffet and you eat so many different things that wouldn't necessarily go together. So next time we'll order differently. There were a lot of fried items and heavy carb items. Milk bread is delicious, but it really filled us up. We ordered the Grouper cheeks. They were fried, with a nice crunch, but scarce on the fish I felt and a bit overpowering with the fresh herbs. The Brussel Sprouts tartine, was disappointing. It looked very unappetizing. We almost didn't try it. I can't remember the cheese that was melted on it, but it's white and just looked really unappealing. The taste - too creamy and the bread was very oily. It was way too heavy and rich. We expected some brussel sprouts and instead it was topped just with a few crunchy leaves. The guinea hen pasta was also disappointing. Not very flavorful, bland and the noodles were too al dente. My husband isn't interested in going back. I would try it again, with a more discriminating eye. The service was poor and we were there early evening, before it was busy. Our server never checked back on us after delivering our drinks. We didn't see her again until the end of the meal. Not sure if thats the norm there or not, but it made it hard for me to order another cocktail. I asked the server who gave us a water refill if I could see a wine list and he forgot to bring it to us, so we never got to order. All in all, the meal was disappointing and the atmosphere isn't cozy at all. Considering all of the hype of this restaurant, we were sadly disappointed and felt let down.
Great service, atmosphere, drinks and food!!!!!! My friends and I enjoyed our 5pm dinner very much! We will definitely return!
I never write reviews but felt compelled after visiting. Kindred really is a gem. The food and drinks were awesome. While I felt the food was a bit on the salty side, the drinks to wash it down with were some of the best I've had in the Charlotte region. You can't go wrong with the Bartender's Choice!
Kindred drives to introduce the patron to unique foods. The Chef does an excellent job incorporating ingredients and balancing flavors. The cuisine does a fantastic job of spurring conversation and making it interesting. I personally think Kindred tries too hard sometimes to make every dish a standout. I have dined in some of the most renowned restaurants in the country and have enjoyed more of a grounded approach from them. This purely my opinion, this is one of my wife's favorite places. P.S. A special shout out to the bartenders who make up the best drinks at the spur of the moment.
Love the farm to table menu
Kindred has the best staff! They knew the dishes, had tasted even the one dish new to the menu that night, and service was just perfect. The bread is the best--and was even perfect when I ate the leftovers the next day. The salted fresh peach yogurt ice cream was memorable! I would like to go back and try some of the craft cocktails--was on my own and driving this time. Thank you Kindred!
We were there for dinner. The food was very good. The biggest problem they have is with their menu. A normal person cannot read the menu and the servers don't really have time to translate the whole menu to you. It is in French and culinary language. Why? I don't know. Then the waiter told us every item is meant to be shared, so we should get a few things. I wasn't planning on getting a few things or sharing with my husband. I came for my own meal. And never mind that each plate costs about $18 if not more.
To sum it all up, the menu is overpriced and you never know what you get. The food is good though.
Sadly I won't go back since I want to know what I order.
This was my first trip to Kindred and was very impressed all around. Between two people, we split the pickles, duck fat potatoes, crispy oysters, beef tartare, and the tagliatelle pasta, all of which were fantastic and more than enough for 2. If going on a nice night, I would recommend asking for a table on the outside patio.
Foodie haven, small portions allowing room to try dishes.
I have worked in the hospitality industry for over 24 years. I have eaten at restaurants all over the world, and I have to say that Kindred is by far my new favorite restaurant. The food is top notch and served in a very relaxed and unpretentious setting. I have eaten meals that were twice as expensive and weren't nearly as good. We sat outside on the open patio which was beautiful, there was comfortable tables and sparkly lights overhead. We were greeted immediately by the server with some delicious house made milk bread and cultured butter. I had a delicious Aperol Spritz cocktail, and my girlfriend had a nice Pinot Grigio. We chose to start with the fried oysters and salumi plate, both of which were a great start to an amazing meal. The server Daniel recommended the pickles to pair with the appetizers, what a great idea. Our entree course of the pork chop and scallops took a while to arrive. The server told us that the kitchen lost our ticket. The food and service up until then had been impeccable, so it wasn't even a bother that it took a while. Our server Daniel brought out a complimentary glass of Pinot Noir and our duck fat fries while we were waiting for the entrees. Once the pork chop and scallops arrived we were very impressed with how flavorful and beautifully plated these dishes were. The service was great the setting romantic and the food was amazing. I will gladly recommend Kindred to anyone that will listen. We will definitely be coming back to Kindred on a regular basis. Kudos to the staff, keep up the good work.
The food is interesting, delicious, expensive ... and worth it! It is hard to believe that we have this place in our small town of Davidson. I've eaten in many restaurants in many cities around the globe (e.g., New Orleans, NY, San Fran, London, Sao Paulo, etc.) and the food at Kindred is right up there with top restaurants everywhere (and even better than some.) The only problem with Kindred is that it is very hard to book a table at a reasonable time on the weekends without planning ahead far in advance!
Kindred is always a classy act. This occasion was no exception.
