North Carolina native, award-winning chef, and New York Times best-selling author Vivian Howard opened her latest culinary concept, Theodosia, at The Sanderling Resort! Every element of this new dining destination will reflect the culture and history of the Outer Banks, creating a connection to a distinctive place and time.

Named for Theodosia Burr—daughter of the infamous Aaron Burr, wife of South Carolina Governor Joseph Alston, and the subject of centuries-old folklore about a ship lost at sea near the Outer Banks—Theodosia will evoke mystery and intrigue. The waterfront setting invites guests to ponder her fate as she journeyed from SC to NY in the early 19th century.

The dining room features rich, feminine textures, soft lighting, and views of the Currituck Sound’s endless horizon. The menu celebrates the region’s salt marshes and fishing heritage, blending tradition with Howard’s signature innovative Southern cuisine.

Beautiful restaurant however for some reason lots of flies if you’re seating next to windows.

Interesting food in small portions so you can order multiples to try a bunch of things. Sat by the window which had a beautiful view but even with the shades it was really hot at least in the section I was sitting in. Also there were numerous flies in the restaurant I think they need to leave the front door closed.

We had a delicious experience at Theodosia. The ceviche was so yummy and we recommend the frogmore red drum and the tomato pie and definitely leave room for the lemon pie - so, so good!

The ambiance was beautiful. Unfortunately the food did not live up to our expectations. Our entrees arrived cold which probably would not happen if plates were warmed. Greatest issue was seeing a server take unused side plates off table and return to server station to be used again….not what I expected at this price point

Very ex ited to eat at Vivian Howard’s latest restaurant. Huge fans and so happy to have visited. Entire experience was excellent. We are foodies and we always have high expectations. Highly recommend Theodosia to all visitors at the OBX!

I don't know if it was because we booked through Open Table or not, but we were given the worst table in the restaurant, despite there being multiple better tables available. The Clam Chowder was more like a soup in a broth than a chowder. The oysters, the tuna tartar, and the red fish were all excellent. Even though the service was a bit slow, the staff were great - especially Jaylin.

We’d tried the restaurant before, 2 years ago, and said “never again.” It’s since rebranded, so we decided to give it a second chance. Now we’re saying “fool me once, shame on me, fool me twice, shame on you know who.” Speaking of which, it really is a shame that The Sanderling struggles with providing an upscale dining option. This was our anniversary. The drinks came swiftly and were nicely done. The appetizers - caviar, ceviche, tartar - were sufficiently and tastefully prepared. We next ordered our entrees, whereupon we waited 45 minutes before being served. What the heck’s going on in that kitchen? Now, if you’re thinking why didn’t we order earlier when we ordered our appetizers/small plates, that’s fair, but consider if we had just arrived for our reservation around the same time we did order, and had gone straight about ordering our entrees…we’d still have sat there for 45 minutes which is unacceptable. The waiter saved what he could of the evening by comping our drinks and taking 50% off the cost of the entrees - which were fabulous, especially the tilefish, when they finally arrived - but some of the romantic ambience of the evening had already been compromised. I did the right thing by tipping him on the full amount of what the bill would have been - it wasn’t his fault. Granted, the place just reopened on May 22, but we thought a near-month was enough to work the kinks out. It hasn’t been. Be forewarned, Theodosia is still very much a work in progress.

Overall a great experience and food was amazing. Our waiter, Dante, was very attentive and knew the menu. Drink service was slow though, but maybe for the better. A great place to go for a nice meal, an elevated experience for the Outer Banks. Prepare to spend some time there.
