About this restaurant

  • Great for scenic views
  • Good for special occasions
  • Great for creative cocktails
North Carolina native, award-winning chef, and New York Times best-selling author Vivian Howard opened her latest culinary concept, Theodosia, at The Sanderling Resort! Every element of this new dining destination will reflect the culture and history of the Outer Banks, creating a connection to a distinctive place and time.

Named for Theodosia Burr—daughter of the infamous Aaron Burr, wife of South Carolina Governor Joseph Alston, and the subject of centuries-old folklore about a ship lost at sea near the Outer Banks—Theodosia will evoke mystery and intrigue. The waterfront setting invites guests to ponder her fate as she journeyed from SC to NY in the early 19th century.

The dining room features rich, feminine textures, soft lighting, and views of the Currituck Sound’s endless horizon. The menu celebrates the region’s salt marshes and fishing heritage, blending tradition with Howard’s signature innovative Southern cuisine.

Review summary

AI-generated from verified diner reviews
Theodosia offers a "wonderful coastal dining experience" with a "gorgeous setting" and "exceptional flavors." The atmosphere is elegant with a "beautiful view" of the water. While some dishes receive mixed reviews, the ceviche and tomato pie are standout choices. Service shows promise, though improvements in timing are noted.

Many other better options for what you are paying for dinner. We’ve eaten at Chef Howard’s other restaurants and were sadly disappointed here. Booked a Birthday Dinner reservation which was not acknowledged in any way. Hostess was frequently away from the front of house; from our seat I could see upwards of 15 people standing around waiting. We were sat along a wall about 18” from another table; which was not relaxing or special at all. I asked for a different table and was denied. Food was average- at best. We had ‘shrimp 2 ways’, with shrimp (+cockTail) that was room temp, and a shrimp ball which was basically a shrimp spread. I had a broiled tile fish which was good; although I could see the serving proportion for others was not standard. We also had tomato pie which was testy but under seasoned (our server said the chef was new). Drinks/ wine were fine. It appears Chef Vivian Howard might just be lending her name to this restaurant: without caring much to refine the whole experience. I highly recommend that you go to Urban Kitchen, Village Table & Tavern, Red Sky, the Roadside, or NC Coast of you want to dine in Duck (or Corolla).

Our meal was excellent! Service friendly and efficient. We were seated as soon as we walked in at our reservation time. Dinning room was warm… but doable. Dinning area is elegant and you can’t beat the view of the sound. We will go back!

I had the crab with zucchini and my friend had the Blue Line Tile fish with Ragout. The tile fish was great in a wonderful brown ragout sauce that was flavorful. The crab with zucchini was exactly what I wanted. It had an abundance of zucchini and was gluten free. It is a very mild dish, but that is what I wanted. The food arrived quickly and was plentiful. Our server Dontae was excellent. He did a great job describing the menu items and was very attentive and personable. The drinks from the bar were great. I had the Carova’s Curse. It was sweet and tasty. The blackberry cobbler was a delicious way to finish the meal and large enough to share. It was topped with a refreshing lemon sorbet. The entree portions were very filling. The decor was lovely and the seating was comfy. We had a window seat which we requested. We were seated quickly and greeted with warmth upon our arrival and departure. The price was comparable to other nice restaurants in the area. Beautiful setting. Interesting options.

The menu didn’t have any basic dishes for people with allergies. A lot of ingredients in the options. Gluten free options were absent on the menu. The tuna tar tar was fabulous, the blue crab was skimpy. Maybe 2 tablespoons of meat priced over $20. A lot of tables, too close together. May consider trying again if the menu changes.

Expect some inconsistencies as they iron out the kinks here but a welcome and delicious addition to the OBX dining scene! This was our second time visiting and won't be the last. Grab a table at the bar for dinner- comfortable and cool and fast service!

Incredibly understaffed for a holiday week. We weren’t seated until 25 minutes after our reservation and were put in a corner on top of the patrons next to us. We ordered a bottle of wine immediately when we sat down and that took 20 minutes to come out to us. The crab claw appetizer had no flavor and the tuna tartar was okay. The blue tile entree made up for the rest of the meal though. I’d recommend eating at the bar instead of waiting for a table. Bartenders were super friendly and accommodating. The cocktail list was super creative - I wanted to try every cocktail on the menu

This brand new restaurant is an incredible addition to the Outerbanks. The food was so fresh & innovative. Highly recommend the fluffy rolls and fish on toast. The cocktails were beautifully made. We did wait about 30 minutes at the bar after our reservation time but still had a great dinner. Highly recommend for anyone looking for fine dining in Duck.

Certainly! Here’s a one-star restaurant review for Theodosia in Duck, NC, based on your experience: ⸻ ⭐☆☆☆☆ Disappointing Experience Despite Good Food We were hopeful about trying Theodosia, especially with the reputation for good food. And to be fair, the food itself was solid — well-prepared and flavorful. Unfortunately, that’s where the positives end. The service was some of the worst we’ve experienced anywhere. We were given warm water to start, and after ordering drinks, it took 40 minutes for them to arrive — well after we had finished our appetizers. No explanation, no apology. Just completely inattentive and disorganized. When service is this poor, it overshadows the food entirely. We left frustrated and disappointed. There are plenty of other great spots in Duck — we would not recommend this one. One star.
