Unknown to us, it was the last day that the restaurant would be open. Our reservation was for 7 pm and the special had already sold out. The wine we asked for was unavailable. Our waiter was nice but very slow. We have been to Kimball's Kitchen in the past and had a much better experience. We can only hope and assume that Covid is to blame. I would not suggest eating there until employment returns to pre-Covid levels.
The most incredible sunset views are to be found at this gem of a restaurant! Delicious food, gorgeous setting, modern decor and outstanding service make Kimball’s one of our favorite restaurants in the world. We always dine here when visiting the Outer Banks!
Great food and atmosphere !
Sadly not as good as it’s used to be. Still one of the better dining places on OBX but like every restaurant it seems, standards overall have dropped given COVID and struggles to find good staff.
We had a poor experience due to the chef who was completely unprofessional. Our starters were excellent and shortly there after the side of lobster Mac and cheese came out with a single bite of lobster ($18 for Mac and cheese with a half ounce of lobster I don't believe was their intent). I figured it was an oversight so pointed this out out our server. 3 minutes later our lobster and steak came out and were both cold. The hostess(who was very accomodating) came over to check on us and I mentioned our entrees were cold. She immediately took the food back saying they will fix it. There is an open kitchen here and I could clearly see the chef was angry with us. I then proceeded to watch 2 or 3 members of the kitchen staff feel the steak to see if it was warm to the touch. 10minutes later our food came back out, the same lobster tail but half the size and the same piece of steak, now overcooked to medium on a cold plate. The waitress slipped and mentioned the chef thought the lobster was warm enough (probably why he was giving me the evil eye and shaking his head from the kitchen). They put pieces of the lobster tail I had ordered into the Mac and cheese and gave me the half tail back. Weird that they thought I wouldn't notice and unprofessional but whatever. What really irked me was the steak that had been touched by the entire kitchen staff then overcooked and re-served all while I was watching. I found this to be very unprofessional. I thought about leaving, as my wife was now grossed out by the steak but decided to stay. The hostess comped the lobster tail. Just disappointing that the chef treated me like the bad guy because our food was cold and my wife felt uncomfortable the entire time on what was supposed to be a romantic evening. Could have been handled much better. Such a shame as we visit our inlaws here 4 or 5 times a year and were hoping this would be our new go to spot.
Great drinks at the bar and a wonderful dinner. So glad to see you all so busy on a Monday night.
Look forward to returning .
Food was definitely not worth the price. The drinks however were good!
Fantastic dinner. The service was superb. And the food was divine.
Just not up to snuff for high end dining. Felt a bit rushed, my appetizer was wrong , so a delay. Sides we're forgotten, so a delay (arrived half way through meal). Food quality was acceptable but not special. Several hundred dollars of "Meh"
So sad. This restaurant used to be amazing but it is so bad now and the service was awful. Stay away.
Great food and great service! The drinks were amazing and the dinner was even better.
Thanks for making my birthday dinner enjoyable, everyone was so nice and the food was absolutely delicious.
We were celebrating our 44th wedding anniversary. We had a lovely table by the window overlooking the ocean but they pulled the shades down 1/2 way through our meal.
An amazing choice for a special evening. Tops anyone else
In the area. Great food and amazing views of the sound.
Thanks for a great evening.
Outstanding! So good, we returned the next evening…
Great food and service especially at the bar. Our favorite place to be
No recognition for our anniversary. Very high price for the value.
Love the total experience at kimball’s Kitchen. Unrushed service, white table cloths, food quality, ambience, view; it all comes together to create a wonderful dining experience.
Beautiful location to watch the sunset! The food was great- little high on the prices and for the prices I feel like the service could have been better. The hostesses were very nice!
Excellent meal at Kimballs Kitchen. We have been before and perhaps this was even better than our last visit - which is saying a lot because Kimballs sets the standard for exceptional dining on the OBX.
I’ve been to most of the high end restaurants in obx this was definitely the best place!!’
Really delicious food, pretty restaurant and if you are lucky to catch a great sunset it’s a really wonderful experience.
Great anniversary dinner.
The service doesn’t match what this restaurant attempts to pull off.
The food and service was outstanding! It is quite pricey so for me it is a special occasion restaurant. There were 4 adults-we got 3 appetizers, 3 sangrias, four dinners and 4 desserts. The bill came to $346!
Food was fabulous- view, cleanliness, etc was amazing - tad short staffed (which currently is the norm for outerbanks restaurants) staff hustled and kept a smile on - could not ask for more
One of the finer dining experiences on the OBX. Food was perfectly prepared, artfully displayed, and very delicious. Would highly recommend for an exceptional meal experience.
The food, atmosphere and service were all wonderful. Our first time dining there and we were very pleased with our experience! Our server was superb!
Make an early reservation. Once it’s dark the beautiful view is gone. We tried but it didn’t work out due to large parties before us taking longer and our seating time being postponed then delayed. Dined at Kimbals Kitchen 2 years ago w/ plans to return last summer then covid hit. Finally returned w/ family. Dark when we were seated, no view. The beet & berry salad was a work of art made by a perfectionist. The best dish we tried. Crab bites too salty, like a pre-made US Food item. Salmon was a disaster w/ overcooked brussel sprouts, sweet potato tasted like candied yams. Others liked the scallops & beef. Service was nothing like 2 years ago when we had a somellier. Waitress had issues. Men at our table kept going to the bar for cocktails. The bread was stale. Took hours. Nice gentleman filled water glasses and was personable. Not what we waited 2 years for.
The ambiance was very nice with an amazing view of the sunset, but that was the best part. The crab soup was beautifully presented but the base was too heavily a tomato base that it overpowered the crab and it was too rich for me. The wedge salads were also beautifully presented and very tasty. After we finished the salads, we waited about 30 minutes for the entrees. Our filets were nowhere near as nicely presented as the soup or salad. We were each handed a large plate with an 8-ounce filet in the middle. They looked kind of sad and plain. Our ‘toppings’ (I got the scallops and my husband got a crab cake) were presented separately on small plates (bread plates). The scallops were delicious but there were only 2 of them and it was $18!!! The crab cake was mostly filler and my husband picked at it but did not eat it. The filets were cooked perfectly (medium rare) and were warm but were very salty. My husband’s bernaise sauce was cold and congealed - like pudding. My peppercorn sauce was very good. Although we were greeted with ‘happy honeymoon’ by the hostess when we arrived, there was no more mention of it throughout the meal. Overall this was a disappointing dinner for $270.
This is very difficult to rate. The restaurant is beautiful and the location is fantastic. 3 of 4 people in our party had near perfect meals. But one had a $60+ steak served cold. Obviously it was lying around before being served. The restaurant was told and while they apologized, they did not remove it from the bill.
Be prepared to spend $600 for four people and 2 decent bottles of wine. For that price, you should expect- and receive- a lot more. For entrees you can add a side. For $16, I’d pass on the 2 small scallops that are served.
This was completely overpriced. Service was meh. Food was just okay. I couldn’t even believe we spent $425 for a family of four to have sub-standard food. It is definitely the best view in Duck, but the food and experience were so disappointing.
Wonderful view and great food but noise level is VERY high and difficult to hear other people at table. Would be good to have some soundproofing panels on the ceiling to cut down on the noise. Wait staff is alright - took a LONG time for our order to be taken and had to continually ask waiter for water glasses to be filled. It is pricey and would expect much better service.
This is a first rate restaurant.
This was our first experience at Kimball's Kitchen and it was so worth it. The food was amazing. Our taste buds were very excited. Our server was great and the manager. I recommend this place for anyone wanting to celebrate a special occasion or just to taste great food.
Excellent food. Loved everything I ordered. Prepared well. Will go back.
Being in the hospitality industry today is not the easiest but coming from someone that is in the business there were certain aspects of the night that could have been easily fixed if the manager had just come over. We waited 35 minutes for our table when we had a reservation. Fine, I can over look that. When we finally got to our table our server or the manager did not greet us for another 15 minutes. There was no water or bread presented that would have solved a lot of our issues. After our server came we had to wait another 10 minutes just to get our beverages and had to request water and bread (which was stale). After we finally got our order in the food came out quickly and it was good. But the mood was already set and what was supposed to be a nice night out for parents just left a bad taste in our mouths. Again, had a manager came over and offered an app while we waited at the bar or if she came over to pour water and make sure we at least had bread our experience might have been different. The view and food were not at all the problem and yes, being in the hospitality industry I am well aware of the shortages and struggles we are all having, I just wish the management could have seen the problems and fixed them.
Food was amazing! Service, not so much. Seated for 20 mins before anyone even addressed us. Server said “I’ll be right back with bread” and it arrived AFTER we were finished with appetizers. Had to flag someone down for water refill. The food, however was beautifully prepared, great flavors and filling. Simply delectable. If only they had the service to match.
