Kil@Wat Ratings and Reviews
Kitchen was very noisy. Table was not completely set when we were seated. I had to ask for water. Kitchen did not follow server’s (diner’s) request. I though Kil@Wat was improving but not this trip. It would’ve nice to have a ‘side’ options with prices printed on the menu for those of us with smaller appetites.
I liked the new menu items. The waiter was excellent. The last few times I have been to Kil@wat, the kitchen has been slow. Once dinners arrived 50 minutes after ordering, this time about 30 minutes. The wait could be filled with another glass of wine, but at 12-15/glass is a bit steep.
This was dinner before a show at the Rep, and had come recommended. The waiter was only mildly attentive. My girlfriend ordered the trout, and it was excellent. I ordered the Seafood Cavatappi, and it was more like a soup than a pasta dish. I mentioned this to our server, and he didn't offer another solution. The manager stopped by to check on us, and I stated that it was very different than what I expected, and that I wasn't expecting a soup-like dish as the main entree. He didn't offer another option or even acknowledge that I was dissatisfied.
It was an odd experience, and from this experience I sadly can't recommend the restaurant. The decor, location and ambiance is very nice, but the service and customer satisfaction need some work.
The lentil hash with oyster mushrooms and Brussels sprouts topped with eggs was outstanding and extremely reasonably priced. I was most pleased with the fact that the staff was able to accommodate me when not only was I 10 minutes late for my reservation but my party doubled from 2 to 4 at the last minute. Many thanks!
Our experience on 1/28/18 for brunch was awful. The service was incredibly slow (they appear to have been understaffed), it was 30 minutes from when we sat down until we even received our beverages.
While we sat there waiting some sort of service, we watched the hostess several times go over to the table next to us (a group she clearly knew) and eat food off their plates with her fingers. Then as she walked away (past our table) she was licking her fingers. EW!
On the plus side, the food itself tasted great....although we didn't get all of it at the same time. (And we had to go up to the bar and ask for some ketchup because our server never came and checked on us.)
In a nutshell, if you have a few hours to kill and don't mind being incredibly frustrated at the speed, join them for brunch!
Gathered with 2 friends for Sunday lunch. Great service, excellent breakfast, pleasant and relaxing atmosphere. We all commented afterwards how much we enjoyed the restaurant and would return again soon. Have also used this restaurant on evenings where we attended the ballet.
I really enjoy this restaurant - service is great with greetings from the host/hostess and very attentive wait staff. Great value for the money and definitely worth driving downtown for a good meal. This was dinner but I have also had brunch here numerous times and love the omelet and French Toast. The night view of downtown is very nice.
Overall it was just average. It's a nice space, though. It seemed strange they walked my friend and I over to a back corner table and also that I couldn't make a reservation at the specific time that I wanted on open table (5:30 was the time that I wanted) when it was clearly not busy at all that night.
I had the rushing waters trout. It was underseasoned and overall the dish was on the oily side, maybe it was the kale that was oily. I didn't really think I needed bacon with the fish dish, it didn't work for me. The server was very nice but for example when she dropped off the dessert menu she quickly left the table and there was a "seasonal" fruit mousse which I wouldn't have known what that was until she told me. It's not like it was busy that night so she could have spent a little more time at our table. I think she could hear our conversation at the corner table they put us at from their stations. Soon after I said to my friend how it wasn't helpful to drop off the dessert menu and not tell us what the seasonal flavors are, she came around the corner and answered that question, so I felt some eavesdropping going on, not really what you want to feel at the dinner table. I also asked her a question about one of the buildings outside, she didn't know and was going to ask others and I realized later she never came back to me about that, either. It's not like she was a "bad" server but she wasn't really doing all the things she could to provide a nice service.
My friend said her hanger steak was just "ok", as well. So, unfortunately, neither of us were impressed.
The pretzel buns were really good, warm, and gooey. Of course, so dense that I couldn't then finish my meal, lol.
I see shows often downtown and next time, it's highly unlikely that I'll choose Kil@wat in the future. They honestly just didn't give me any reason to come back or to choose this over the many other restaurants downtown.
(does anyone else think they should ditch the @ symbol in the name?)
We booked our reservation to assure timely arrival at the symphony across the street. The restaurant was ramping up for a theater crowd, and they seemed very well-prepared for it. Our drinking food orders were all taken promptly but without making us feel rushed. The server was great. She made a few recommendations based on talking with us and we were really happy with our food. One of us had the diver scallops, the other the salmon. Both were excellently prepared, and were plated with very creative and tasty sides. I was pleasantly surprised at the healthy pour I received when ordering a single malt scotch neat. Manager came by and, without being intrusive, made sure we were happy.
Worth noting that this restaurant also provides room service for the Intercontinental Hotel. The following morning we ordered room service for breakfast, and the crab cake Benedict was fantastic. They offer those same crab cakes as an appetizer on the lunch and dinner menu in the restaurant too.
Would think if you make a reservation..you would get decent table...our was wobbly, smashed against the wall...bad place to sit..made it clear to hostess, but no accommodation was made for a.better seat...more like take it or leave attitude...lots of great places to eat downtown...won't be going back to Kil.a.watt
We drove up from Chicago for a concert at the Marcus Center, and decided to try Kil@wat for dinner before the concert. What a lucky choice! Warm ambience, a great view of the city, lovely service, wonderful food, and a two-minute walk to the concert hall. We will plan to dine at Kil@wat whenever we visit Milwaukee!
Please do not order the Market Salad. The lettuce was chewy and bitter. The Hanger Steak was ok but the fries were cold. The Cavatappi while tasty, was missing the Rock Shrimp. When the waiter was informed he brought a bowl of little shrimp to add to the broth. The quality of the restaurant overall has slipped. We checked in 15 minutes early and could see that the restaurant was nearly empty but we were told we had to wait until our reservation time at 6??
The friend who was joining me for dinner was unexpectedly caught in traffic and ended up being 15 minutes late for our reserved time. The hostess who greeted us was accommodating and kind, not once making either one of us feel rushed or as though we had somehow caused a problem, and graciously escorted us to our table once my friend had arrived. Our server, Abby, was warm, knowledgeable, accommodating, and attentive. She recognized quickly that my guest and I were friends who hadn't connected in awhile, and gave us the space and the respect to be able to enjoy the time we had together. Our meal was acceptable, although, as a vegetarian, I would have liked to have had more options available other than the grilled polenta & eggplant stack (which was not prepared well: the polenta was unevenly grilled and cool in spots, the eggplant was soggy, and the hint of fresco was too much of a hint and not enough of an accompaniment). There are so many exquisite, creative, palatable vegetarian options that could be offered; I would respectfully suggest that the chef consider more food-sensitive choices. Overall, however, my friend and I had a comfortable and engaging experience. Thank you to all for a lovely evening.
I realize we were on a tight time frame to make the show across the street at 8 pm. However, but only offering apps and salads for dinner choice doesnt fly. My short ribs ended up being cold and you didnt offer everyone at the table a drink order when we sat down. I felt rushed the entire time. Also, water refills would have been nice at least once. Terrible experience. Too bad its really the only restaurant to walk to for our show.
The ambiance is great just as it has been in the past. We did go there for New Year's Eve and were only provided their set 5 course menu and had to ask for their regular menu. The seafood cavatappi was wonderful and everything was cooked spot on. My husband had the filet and ordered it medium-rare it came medium-well but our waitress was too busy to come back and check on us until we were both almost finished with our meals. My husband said there were parts of the steak that were a little closer to medium-rare but overall, not how he ordered it. He also ordered a drink and it didn't come until he was finished with his meal. I understand that it was a little busy due to the holiday but I feel like our waitress (Becky I believe) had too many tables and was unable to give the proper attention to each one. While it was good we probably won't return for some time as we had in the past, it would not be high on my recommendation list and I feel there are other spots downtown where you could get better service for roughly the same price.
This was our second time eating here. The first visit wasn’t bad, but the food wasn’t amazing for the price.
On the second visit the food was terrible. The roasted potatoes were as hard and crunchy as any raw potatoe. The lamb was cooked properly but absent of any flavor at all. The filet was ordered medium-rare, and it arrived at the table well done after a long period of waiting. None of the food was, and some of it was absolutely terrible.
The server was fine. I don’t have any real complaints about the service other than them only offering to comp one of our two meals. My wife literally didn’t even need to taste her steak to notice how burnt it was, so she didn’t eat at all. I had a couple bites of the bland lamb and two bites of the hardest potato ever served to a guest, and then stopped eating. I was really quite surprised that no manager ever came by the table after we complained about how poorly the food was prepared.
My wife and I will absolutely not be returning. There are far too many places to eat that actually know how to cook food properly.
