Kiji Sushi Bar and Cuisine - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
Excellent food, as always. The waitress was not good, however. I can only hope she was new--took a long time to check in with us, a little defensive (we had 9 rather than the reserved 8 show up which was openly not liked, despite being an easy fix to add another chair), and forgetful (did not even provide soy sauce, etc.). I will continue to go with a friend or two, but will likely sit at the bar. The chef was excellent and even offered a birthday dessert. But sadly so much time was wasted by the inattentive waitress that we had no time for it before going to another engagement.
Incredibly slow service. After an hour of waiting, we asked. Turned out there was only one sushi chef on duty. The staff said the owner had made cuts. They recommended we switch to cooked kitchen food which would be faster. Disappointed they had not told us this when we sat down. Food is great but not worth this kind of wait
Great dining experience, as always. The fish and seafood are very fresh, and the service attentive. I like that the tip is already factored into the posted prices on the menu. The place is relatively quiet, so a good choice when catching up with a friend or two.
We went towards the end of the night, bad move as you get spotty customer service, forgetful waitresses and fastly prepared food because they want you out so they can close. The sushi is just ok. We had two rolls, the sunomono salad with crab and the hamachi carpaccio. Nothing to write home about. The carpaccio needed way more acidity to balance the earthiness of the truffle oil. But impressed and won't be coming back.
The sushi is of fair quality, but the sushi chef and wait staff were completely indifferent to our presence. When the sushi was placed on the counter, they did not identify any of the fish, and they did not include wasabi. When we asked for wasabi, they dropped it on the counter without a word. I genuinely believe they could not care less whether we eat there - so we won't.
The food was delicious, in particular for sushi it was one of the best I've been in SF. The service is very attentive and they know very well their food, we asked for some recommendations and they were very helpful.
The place is small and a bit cold, especially if you are near the door.
Apart from the excellent food and service, I also liked that they don't accept tips. The only problem is that they do add a fixed surcharge in the bill (like a "mandatory tip", but independently of the number of people in the group), it would be better if they just update the menu with the total price that the customer pays.
The sushi was really great and everything was very affordable. Sushi dates can get so expensive, but for us it was a great deal. 4 good rolls, 6 pieces of nigiri and a large sake for $90. Very solid place. They put some south of the border twist on some sushi rolls as well (really fun mix) Go for a date or with a small group. Great music at a good volume (too loud or too quiet is unpleasant) Try their Spider Roll and fresh Walu if they have it, those were our favorite!
Good saki menu, but not much else. Portions are small. From the food to the atmosphere nothing is particularly special. Good food, certainly not great. Overall, not worth the expensive bill, better off just finding a cheaper hole in the wall spot or a place that's more impressive for the money.
Food was great, but the service was terrible. Our waiter would bring out our dishes as they were prepared, but they forgot one of our dishes. It's one thing to forget about a dish, it's another to ignore a table for a good 20 minutes when we are just sitting around. After waiting around for an additional 20 minutes for them to prepare a single sushi roll, our waiter was still no where to be found. We eventually had to ask the hostess to look into our lost roll. Apparently our roll had just been sitting in the kitchen, and had gotten cold (we had a lightly friend roll). The waiter never acknowledged any of our troubles despite all of this, which is why I felt compelled to write this review.
Sat at the sushi bar and feasted on AmberJack, Butterfish, toro, salmon belly and Yellowtail belly and sweet shrimp. Started with Toro tartar which is served with Truffle oil and then did straight sushi for the rest of the dinner. The sushi is served minimalist style a la Jiro. Need I say more?
Very nice local sushi bar. The service was excellent, very prompt friendly and responsive. There were the standby's and some creative additions. Love the Kiji Shooters. The toro was awesome. Would definitely go back. Also unprompted because I said it was my partner's birthday in the reservation they greeted her by saying happy birthday and brought out green tea ice-cream with a candle. Very nice touch.
There's always something new to try at Kiji and the sushi is always fresh and tasty. Our service was a little disjointed this time. We had several different servers who didn't know what had already been ordered. We usually like to just order everything at one time and have it brought out in courses, but the waitress kept running off after we ordered one or two things, which was a little odd. Still great and I would definitely recommend it.
Like any excellent sushi restaurant, you will pay a high price for the incredible quality of fish at Kiji. The sticker price may not look much above normal, but the portions are significantly small. You can easily spend upwards of $30 on nigiri and rolls alone and still feel hungry. That being said, this is some of the freshest, most delicious fish I have tasted in this city. They even have the rice down to a perfect science- and trust me, you will notice the difference. I do believe that it is all worth the price, but it helps to know just what you are getting into- and paying for.
