The presentation and the flavors are equally superb. Of course, only the freshest fish and seafood are used, so the sushi is impeccable. The molten flourless chocolate cake is achieving legendary status, so save room for a delicious finish!
Absolutely delicious food, but extremely slow service.
This was a day of reservation for Valentines Day, as we arrived on the island earlier in the day. We were sat 15 minutes later than our reservation was for, which we were fine with because it’s Valentine’s Day and they were very busy and everyone was busting tail to get things done.
Our server was a little slow, again could have been for Vday, so not marking down for that. The food was great, the service was friendly, and I was very happy with our choice.
We keep going back for more. Excellent service and the FOOD!!! I would put this restaurant in my top 10 for sure.
We had a fabulous dinner at Kenichi Pacific. The food was excellent and the service was great. I would recommend this restaurant highly.
Amazing food and amazing service. Will definitely recommend.
Our last night in Kona - we enjoyed the Sashimi dinner and chef special kampachi- our server Hayley took excellent care of us - - thank you Kenichi for continued great service food and atmosphere
Awesome service, clean environment and Ono food!
The wait staff was very attentive, friendly and very caring. Full on Japanese cuisine with Aloha.
The best sushi in Kona.
Another awesome dining experience at the end of a busy day - nice to be welcomed by Manager Bebelyn and again have Maverick take care of our service - we enjoyed the calamari appetizer and spicy tuna sushi and Kenichi roll as our main course
We will be back - thanks again Kenichi for keeping our special place extra special
Great restaurant with totally Japanese menu. Quality in every dish
Sushi and Sashimi excellent. Sushi a great bargain during their Happy Hour
The food was great, the service was pretty good but what wasn’t good was the reservation time. We had wanted something around 6:15 but were told (by
open table) we could only get 5:45 or 7:00. We took 5:45 and were there for about 1 1/2 hours. The whole time the place was half empty so I’m not sure why we were not given the option of a later booking.
Great service and the lamb was one of the best I’ve had!!😊
Our bartender server was awesome! She was so accommodating for our large group with three noisy kids. Mahalo!
we will not return, service was lousy, hair in food, miso soup was late and lukewarm, took 45 minutes for dessert to come, managers' response was tepid, like the soup, will not return...
We had a wonderful experience thanks to our server Bebelyn. We have been here before but this time her energetic and fun personality made the difference. We so appreciate when someone clearly enjoys their job and it shows through.
Good sushi. A little expensive
The hostess was very accommodating regarding the seating. Food was excellent: very flavorful and perfect portions!
We sat at the high top tables in the bar area. Service staff was friendly. Husband had special Mahi Mahi pan seared with mashed potatoes. The fish smelled strongly and he was not happy with it. I had salad and sushi special roll. Salad was fresh with excellent dressing and the sushi was very good. This restaurant is located in a strip area.
We’ve enjoyed excellent food at Kenichi’s happy hour in the past, so it seemed a natural choice for a festive birthday dinner, but wow, what a disappointment.
For these prices — and pretensions — there’s no excuse for having to sit at a table without menus or water for 15 minutes, or to have conversation rendered impossible by patrons drinking and shouting sports bar style throughout the restaurant.
The miso black cod is exceptional and the lamb chops were good, but at nearly $40 a sushi dinner was haphazardly assembled and deeply unsatisfying — heavy-handed wasabi layered on by the chef rendered delicate fish inedible, some fish was lackluster and carelessly assembled tumbling off the rice, the vegetable tempura was heavy and lacked flavor. We’ve eaten sushi throughout Japan and have a sense of what to expect, it’s a mystery how the team of serious-looking sushi chefs at Kenichi could miss the mark in a town filled with excellent fresh fish.
The birthday guest left over most of the sushi dinner, and we left without ordering dessert. The wait staff was so un-present there was no realistic way to get the meal back on track.
We’ll return for the tasty small plates during happy hour at Kenichi, when there’s no pretense of fine dining and the half-price cost matches the experience. But sadly, we would not attempt another special occasion meal at Kenichi’s.
My wife and I sat at the sushi bar, the service and food were extraordinary!! This is our 3rd time at this restaurant and it never disappointed us. Highly recomendad
Service was atrocious
Wonderful! We come every year for our anniversary. Food is consistent and delicious!!
The food was incredible. The service was not. Had a reservation. Shown to our table after 10 minute wait. Then no one returned to table for 30 minutes. The waitress never returned. We then were assisted by a manager, a runner, bus boy - who finally also took our dessert order and provided check. It was not that busy.
Spent last night in Hawai’i here. It is a very modern space tucked into a strip mall. Staff was superb; very friendly and definitely on top of it even though it was very busy. Sushi/sashimi we had was delicious. The beef carpaccio will melt in your mouth. They also accommodated special requests from the kids without a thought. Definitely make a reservation! We would absolutely return next time we are in Kona.
Really disappointing experience. Food just so mediocre noise inside unbelievable. Outside is much better. Would look for other places in Kailua-Kona
Even with a busy New Years Eve crowd, Kenichi staff provided exemplary service - our server Maverick was quick on the suggestions and always right there to make sure we were never left waiting for anything - dinner selections and preparations were perfect to make our New Years Eve dinner special. Special thanks to manager Bebelyn and of corse Kenichi himself who successfully kept all moving smoothly
We will be back soon
We have been going to Kenichi’s for at least the last 10 years and this is the first “off” experience we’ve had there. We were a party of 6 and 3 of us ordered the “surf and turf” which had been described as the special of the night. The filet mignon was ok but the “firecracker” lobster was definitely a big disappointment. We questioned whether the pieces were made from lobster or a mystery fish. My wife ordered the “trio”, which is her “go to” meal at Kenichi. Even thought we had an early 6 PM seating it looked like the kitchen was parsing our food to get through the big night. In any event the “trio” was about half the serving it usually is.
From start to finish the service was exemplary and that really helped overcome the disappointment with the entrees.
One other point of concern: we started the meal with a bottle of domestic sparkling wine and were very disappointed to learn that there were no flutes available so we had to drink the sparkling wine using the ubiquitous wine glasses used for both white and red wines at Kenechi.
We made a reservation outside, which was unfortunately not available. Service blamed open table for that problem☹️
probably the best japanese food I have ever had
Too loud to talk. Customers shouting over the noise. Food and service great, though. Place needs sound absorbing ceilings.
Out of the ordinary - quirky and tasty. A warm welcome and knowledgeable server. Make it a priority when ever we visit the island. Great food thoughtfully prepared.
Excellent sushi and service! We really enjoyed our meal!
We have gone here quite a few times over the past 5 years and I can say this was our worst experience and part of an ongoing difficulty to get a table in the area we want to be in and request far in advance when making a booking. We did get a table after some shuffling with the explanation that some people had come in earlier with a promise to leave where we were booked to sit by the time we arrived. But instead of just having drinks and leaving as they said they would, they arrived late and ordered dinner and were just about to be served when we arrived. What's a restaurant owner to do? I would comp somethings and make sure my customers got great service. But I'm not the owner and this didn't happen. My wife and I ordered a dinner to split(not sushi which can be easily shared) and it came with only one plate and not split in the kitchen and with not enough sauce on it for even one diner. By the time the extra plate and some extra sauce arrived our companions had almost finished 1/2 of their meals. The food was excellent! I have absolutely no criticism of the quality or preparation of food. Kenichi Pacific is excellent in this regard and always consistent. We will return but not for a while. We have tried booking in person, over the phone and via Open Table and have had some trouble along these lines before so I don't know the solution to this. It's hit and miss. This was just the worst experience we've had. I do still recommend Kenichi's.
On this solo Hawaii trip I chose Kenichi as my Japanese food experience on Island of Hawai’i. The nigiris didn’t disappoint on freshness of seafood, only the rice fragrance could be better with more vinegar. Lastly I highly recommend the miso black cod.
If we’d been a little earlier we would have been able to enjoy the great Hawaiian music and hula just outside their outdoor dining. Food was ono . Service great. We loved it.
Favorite place for sushi! Also, always great service ! Thanks
A wonderful collection of eclectic dishes, sushi and sashimi. Service was great, a very attentive waiter with good command of the menu and excellent suggestions. The miso black cod was phenomenal, as was the specials with very fresh ahi - both a roll and sashimi. They also offered real japanese wasabi; I'm assuming authentic because much more flavorful with depth then the usual. It wasn't an inexpensive dinner but very satisfying. The ambiance in the middle of a mall is meh, and we ate outside in part because of a raucous bunch of ladies at the bar.
Hidden gem, top notch, delicate food offerings. we sat in the outside breezeway. Food was remarkably fresh. Service was prompt.
Good sushi, both the nigiri and the roll were very good. Service was not good. Waitress didn’t know what she was doing. Served tables that were seated after us before returning to take our dinner order, probably waited 20 minutes for her to return after appetizers, during which she visited every other table at least once before coming back. We almost left. Sushi was very good but pricey. Ribs appetizer not as good as others we had in Hilo or Volcano. Tempura was so so. Won’t go back. Would not recommend.
