This was absolutely wonderful. The flavors and quality of the food was equal to the most
expensive and top rated restaurants in the city. The service was second to none. I would return
to this restaurant any time and especially if I had out of town visitors for the special experience.
I introduced three friends to the restaurant who had professed their interest but never sought it out. I held them to their word and off we went. They were very pleasantly surprised and can't wait to go back! Each one was very happy with their selection and also each one called me to let me know how impressed they were with the whole experience.
The choices may seem limited but really there are enough item to make an easy selection. Besides, everything is so good, it's hard to go wrong!
We ate at Boka, and Everest (~$350/couple) with great meals, but they didn’t come close to the amazing meal we had at Kendall. Lauren (waitress), Zack (bartender), Bob (manager) were fun, gracious, knowledgeable, and a delight. The food, service, music ( four seasons) was perfect, but meeting the students and hearing their stories was the best. A must do Chicago evening
Once again, Kendall for lunch was outstanding. Pork Shoulder raguot, and coffee cheesecake dessert were true standouts. Would have licked the dessert plate had my wife allowed. View superb. Eager service by Kendall students being taught the front end of the house does not deter from the ambiance and the value - 3 courses at lunch for $18, with wine - $22.
Go now before they move downtown in 6-8 mo. Here there is plenty of easy access and free parking. Don't wait, go now !!!!
You can't beat the presentation, food and ambiance for the price. I hadn't been there in a few years and discovered it was as good as I remembered.
Great value and fun to talk with the culinary students that work in the restaurant.
Such a special place! Cuisine in the
best sense - delicious, perfect portions, excelkent selections, lovely flavours & textures, great bar specials, with easy parking and an amazing view of the city.
And, supporting students and a school.
Nothing better!
Great food and service
I had the most delightful meal at The Dining Room. Maxwell assisted me b/c I got lost trying to get there (and I have been there before). I consider myself a foodie and the restaurant did not disappoint. Every morsel was great. They provided a free appetizer which was both exotic and delightful. The student waiter was charming as he was learning about this aspect of culinary school. I was seated at a table where I could watch the students/chefs preparing and perfecting the dishes. I ended with a pleasant cup of tea. Maxwell told me the wine was on him (I think b/c he sensed how anxious I was before arriving since I could not figure out where I was on my way to the restaurant. All I could think of was I want to go back very soon.
Gave one star as we never had the opportunity to dine there. We had a reservation for 2 at 1 pm. We arrived at 1:13 and were told that the kitchen had closed..what???? They’re teaching the students that it’s okay to dismiss their customers like that?
So disappointed.
We were warmly greeted by Susan, who runs the front of the house. The wait-staff, pastry students who are finishing up their schooling, we all quite friendly and efficient. The food, prepared by other students under the watchful eye of the prof, was exceptionally good, especially the lobster roll.
Great Food prepared by the culinary students. Good service, beautiful room.
The students work so hard at service and food. Always a lovely relaxing evening with delicious meals.
An always enjoyable, unique dining experience! Love that we can bring our own favorite wines!!
Outstanding evening. Loved the attention we received from the entire staff. Food was delicious and presented beautifully.
Absolutely delicious. Service was perfect and I love the setting. Even though I know it's not, it seems like a well kept secret.
I love dining at Kendall College. I wanted this to be a special evening, and, thanks to the staff, it was a perfect night. We had the halibut and the steak for dinner, and the risotto and scallops for appetizers. The meals are always so delicious, and the presentation is just beautiful. And the service was 5-star. If you want to have a special evening out, this is the place to go.
our friends and i had great time. we love watching the kitchen and the student cooking our meal.
Super great service and delicious food. The scallions and shrimp rigatoni dish were to die for. Soufflé is the best we ever had - Seriously! Food presentation was wonderful. They gave us a couple of complimentary items on top of our prix fixe menu but need some improvement in taste. Servers were super attentive like we were in a 5 star restaurant. It was too long between each course which made the 3-cousse lunch to last 2.5 hours. Overall, a wonderful experience and great value. We would definitely go back and may try dinner next time.
Fantastic place: open kitchen visible to everyone, exquisite food, dedicated students in cuisine and also waiting on. A hidden gem in Chicago.
Really enjoy the dining experience. Love being part of a learning environment. Food was excellent. Value was fantastic. Schedule another night right away for my boyfriend's birthday. A great place to go that's not bad on the wallet.
THE food was very fresh, sauces on food were excellent, we went for restaurant week, so it was dedinetly a dinning experience . the pastries were superb but portions of pastry was very limited. we even met the chef on the elevator who is the dean of the culinary school. i also liked the fact you could talk, and not be blared out by decibels of mindless music, that most restaurants play!!!!!!!! i heard from our server, the school is closing , due to by out by National louis university.
While the menu is interesting, the food very good and VERY nicely presented, the ambiance leaves a bit to be desired. For some reason, there were empty tables (as there were the last time we were there) and that is surprising since reservations are challenging. And this detracts for the overall experience.
While the staff is quite attentive, there are several of them so requests aren't always communicated.
We have are at Kendall College several times now and before this experience as always found their service and food excellent especially given the fact that this is a learning classroom for the culinary students.
The major issue was that they admiringly gave my wife’s entree (lamb chop) to another table so after some time they delivered halibut which was what I had ordered but was chosen for her without comment or input. They told us this would have to do until the chef could prepare another lamb chop entree. When we told them that we would wait for the lamb chop entree and get both entrees together, they looked at me funny and said we will do that but you’re halibut would probably be cold by that time. Since we did not want that we both ate part of the halibut since it was cold probably from the delay in serving these to us due to panic from the wait staff not knowing what to do because of the initial mistake.
After several different staff came over to ask us if we were enjoying our experience and hearing that we were disappointed due to the fatal flaw of not obtaining what we had ordered and having to life with it, the TA came over to say that this event was so serious that he had recommended to the manager that they compensate us for our meal.
I am always mystified why a restaurant chooses this customer service technique since I for one never wants this compensation. What I would have appreciated more , especially in a learning environment like Kendall College that they invite us back on them to show us that they have learned from their mistake.
Once the manager stated that he was going to comp the meal, our server and her entire support staff disappeared (no clearing of dinner plates, no water, no asking if we would like to order another drink, no asking if we would like desert - even though tables around us were getting these basic services ) clearly not knowing what to do and without any guidance from the manager or TA. Hardly what we expect from Kendall.
Very enjoyable lunch in a relaxed atmosphere. Food and service were excellent. Noise level was low, enabling easy conversation.
I love the idea that Kendall has a dining room that you can visit. I can only assume that the one seating every 15 minutes is to not overwhelm anyone there. However, they were never full, though you could not book a table if you wanted one. The servers try hard, but there is a language barrier, and it feels like you are dining in another country. The presentation of the food was good, but the flavors still needed development. The fish was overcooked. The beet salad had almost no beets in it. The portions are small, and not only did I leave feeling hungry, I actually went home and had to have a second dinner. Not what I would expect after paying $33 to already have dinner. I would go back if the regular menu prices were reasonable, but there is no way that I would pay $25/entree, and they should not be charging that much. I get that they need to cover costs, but that should be the end of it.
Food was great; atmosphere also very good. Service was a little confusing though not a reason not to go to this lovely out of the way gem. Will go again.
My birthday celebration there was most pleasurable.
Atmosphere great, service impeccable, food delicious. Really appreciated gluten- and alcohol-free accommodation! Oysters and salmon were flavorful highlights of the evening. So sorry to see Kendall leaving this site!!
Great price for fine dining, Michelin rated restaurant. My first time here, won't be my last. Will definitely be coming back every quarter for the change of menus.
We were friends getting together to enjoy special dining. The servers were very gracious, it was a lovely experience
Loved it. Such a nice experience. We loved almost everything we had. The scallops were my favorite!
We went to for a birthday celebration. The food and service were amazing. I also love the idea that you can see into the kitchen. I would recommend this to anyone for a special occasion place. Also, supporting students should always be a goal and your tip goes to the student scholarship fund!
Have been there three times in last three months with mixed results. This time the French bread was DIVINE, especially with the honey-lemon butter. BUT: my beet salad had so few pieces of beets they were unidentifiable. The cod entree was tasteless. The raspberry soufflee uninspiring (wish a friend could give you a lesson on souffles: her orange soufflee is do DIE for). My dining friend loved all three of her plates. My hubby couldn't attend and Kendall was nice enough to prepare a three course meal to go for him. He loved the carrot soup, his steak, and chocolate cheesecake. Main suggestion - make and serve LARGER portions of vegetables. Don't disguise them as purees, of which you serve about one tablespoon!
I was disappointed. I have been eating there for years. The food was good but the portions were inconsistent. My entree steak was huge and perfect. My son’s entree “seafood boil” contained 3 small shrimp and 3 small clams. Hardly an entree ,an appetizer maybe. I pointed it out to the waiter and the host and was told that’s how it comes. My son ate half my steak.
Since Pam left they seem to have lost the niceties. No one offered to Check our coats, no intermezzo was served and no chocolates after the meal. Small touches but I noticed.
Best deal for a consistent three course meal that is a gourmet experience. They once told me that every day is a "Restaurant Week" day for them.
I changed my Open Table reservation, but the date was incorrect so we didn't have a reservation when we showed up. Thankfully, the staff accommodated us and got us a table after only a slight delay.
We went to celebrate our children's birthdays (18 and 21) after seeing a show at Water Tower Place. Ambiance is great, nice views of the city, fantastic staff, and amazing food.
My daughter is an aspiring pastry chef and was thrilled to see the open kitchen. Every course was #pictureworthy, making for a wonderful conclusion to our day in the city.
We enjoy bringing friends here to see there response when they walk into the dining room and see the students and staff at work and then to notice the great view of the city. The creative changing menu has never failed to please. Also, in the evening and weekends the parking is free.
We took two friends to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They were amazed at the quality of the food and the variety. We have enjoyed the Kendall College Dining Room for several years and have never been disappointed.
One word of caution, however, you have to be patient. Your server may be someone who has never waited table before, or who has not had a history of fine dining. That goes for the bartender, also. Letting things happen unhurriedly will have great rewards.
First of all, it was interesting. Expectations should be low, since this is not a professional restaurant. Some things were good, some were not, but it was fun discussing what these students are trying to do.
They need more vegetables on the plate, though. It was all protein/starch ...
