Kelvin Ratings and Reviews
Service was great and it was early in the evening around 6pm so it was very quiet. Veggie risotto was OK and Salmon was good. It was very quiet in a quiet business district for downtown SD on a Friday night. Good for a hotel restaurant but also overpriced like one.
This is our second time in the restaurant and third time at this location. We found eating in the restaurant is much better than the lounge area. Even though there are only a few selections on the menu we found everything we tried was excellent. The music in both locations was quirky, but not too loud in the restaurant while we dined compared to the lounge area.
Great place. We'd return again. When we arrived, we were the only other couple in the restaurant. We chose to sit outside instead because of the weather. Great location, great service, and good food. We used the Travelzoo Deal and thought that it was worth the money.
The service was wonderful and very intimate. From the moment i walked in...both the host and server made me feel very welcome. The menu is limited, but everything i tried was delicious. Sweet potato fries with the chipotle ranch were delicious. We sat outside with our dogs and they brought out treats and water for them. Close to home and 1000 point tables...I'll be coming here often!!! :D
It's a shame what has happened to this restaurant as far as the quality of food goes. We used to eat dinner here once a week for the great food and great service. Well, the service is still great, but the quality of the food has significantly deteriorated although the prices remain high. This restaurant needs a new chef.
My husband and I enjoyed a relaxing evening of dining at Kelvin. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful. I enjoyed the Avocado Tempura appetizers. My husband had the Kelvin Burger, which was good, but too pricey at $18. We liked the parmesan sprinkled fries that came with it. I had the pork dish (name escapes me) and was so tender.
We had a most wonderful, intimate, gourmet meal at this cute modern restaurant inside the W Hotel. To our surprise, we were the only couple dining on a Saturday night at 6 PM. What a shame. The beet, frisee and goat cheese salad was fab, seared ahi and scallop carbonara dishes both delicious and artfully presented. Perhaps the W's uptown location and nearby construction has turned off diners, but you are indeed missing out on a quaint, reasonably priced, gourmet dinner in a uniquely chic room, augmented by cool adult chill music. We will most definitely return the next time we visit San Diego.
We loved the contemporary decor and vibrant colors. The staff were all friendly and attentive. The food was tasty and would satisfy even the most persnickety foodie. However, the drinks and food are both way overpriced. The restaurant doesn't offer happy hour and cocktails are $15. Entrees were about $19 to $38, but most were in the mid to upper $20's. Also, I'm not certain, but I think we paid some sort of hotel tax though we weren't staying at the hotel. For these reasons I am unlikely to return. This is probably a great spot for travelers with their company per diem.
We can always depend on Kelvin for a great meal. The food is fairly rich, but delicious. I always start with the Frisée and Beet Salad and usually move on to the delicious Crispy Salmon with Farro. The specials are always terrific, especially the Diver Scallops with mushroom risotto. Jeffrey is the consummate waiter who makes us want to keep coming back.
Best thing about this place was the Bloodies and they were a 6/10, the food was nothing one can't do at home with minimal experience and the cost of such basic food is high for the quality of what is given. I would not recommend this place really to anyone.
Highly overpriced, quality well below motel standards. Food was horrible and rushed. Drinks ... I should've had water. Place was empty on Valentine's at the W Hotel, we obviously didn't get the memo. I don't think this place will survive a few more weeks. Avoid at all cost. He had to go for an actual dinner afterwards. Waiter was nice and tried to work with the slim resources he had at hand.
Overall, was nicely surprised by our Valentines Dinner at Kelvin. Whereas this place used to be maddeningly loud and crazy, and a rather hip place to be, it has calmed considerably and was not as busy as we thought it would be. We ate at an early sitting for our Valentine Dinner which was a pre-fixe menu, but had enough choice to delight even my gluten free partner. Everything was tasty, and we delighted in the wine flights with our meals which were nicely paired. As I am not a white wine drinker, Brent, our server , accommodated me when my flight may have suggested a white wine. From the beginning with the sumptuous foie, to the end with the delightful chocolate mousse, we were impressed!
Fantastic restaurant and atmosphere, my first time here. Dined here for a work meeting, my colleague chose the venue. My singular suggestion as an area for improvement is to have at least one vegan entree option on the menu. All I was able to eat was the appetizer bowl of vegetables. They were delicious, but I was hungry when I got home. Fun fact for the folks at Kelvin to consider: approximately 16 million people in the US are vegan/vegetarian.
While the menu was inventive and the food tasty, I was surprised to find the restaurant almost deserted--and no staff to be found when I arrived! Once I was seated, service was what I'd expect from a restaurant like this one, and portions generous. While I'm not sure I'll go back, it's a solid choice for breakfast downtown.
Came here to use a $50 restaurant.com gift card - arrived 7Pm no one else was in the restaurant. Food was great, we had the K'arne Asada Fries (with actual cuts of potatoes) to start with. Entrees were Amish Chicken which was great but something was very salty, not sure what. There was a lot going on on the plate. Also got the NY strip which was huge and looked more like prime rib. Again, something on that plate was very salty. The food was good so not sure why so much salt. The gouda mac and cheese was great. Took home the s'mores dessert, but did not work out well. thought there woudl be more graham, it was mostly marshmallow and chocolate and when reheated, a big sugary mess. wish we ate it there but too full on the other food!
Had we not already purchased a restaurant.com coupon for the meal, I would have upon seeing the prices for the entrees. About what you would expect for a Gaslamp area restaurant, however, I was a little surprised at the high price even for simple chicken dishes. In addition, due to the construction going on around it, the place felt pretty empty when we got there and stayed empty most of the time (even though it was a Saturday night). Since this was a special occasion for our group of 4, we actually enjoyed the almost silent atmosphere in the place. Aside from the poor lighting at our table, we all agreed the experience was fantastic. The food was divine, and there was an interesting variety of meal options. The server was polite, helpful and attentive and even brought out an insanely delicious dessert to celebrate our occasion (anniversary). He was patient when including our discount and he hopefully appreciated the accompanying generous tip!
I was at Kelvin for my birthday celebration. I am totally impressed by the services. The server team was friendly, attentive and helpful. The food was great (fresh ingredients and creative) and the amount of serving was just right. They also have great desserts. The ambiance Is comfortable and modern, not noisy as to find it difficult to carry on a conversation and not too dark either as to require switching on the flashlight app of the phone to look at the fine prints on the menu.
Service and food was good. For dinner in San Diego at those prices there are better choices for atmosphere. Dated and was boring at that price ramge. Maybe more hip at lunch and will give it another try. Used a Restaurant.com certificate and waiter added his 18% before discount which was kinda rude. Service was good so we dodnt speak out but still was rude. We had no problem getting a llast minute reservation on a Friday. which should have been a clue.
The restaurant is much smaller than I expected. Not too many patrons, either. But the food was really good. Service was a little on the slow side, but not bad. I think there was only one waiter serving about 6 tables and they were probably all there at the same time which is difficult for one waiter.
