Always good food and atmosphere. Enjoyed a good cigar downstairs
Fun place. Friendly. Attentive staff. Heard Beltaine... they are great!
Great Authentic Irish Pub!
Sheppard’s pie was great!
Good fun, awesome service, tasty meals, and best of all a cigar bar with a great selection of scotch whisky.
Food online wasn't food available in restaurant. Server seemed annoyed with every table he waited on and the standing crowd backed into us while eating at our table. The food that was available was bland. Kells used to be amazing with great food, ambience, and music, but they've changed to cater to the younger crowd.
First of all, what is the deal with your reservation system? A couple of years ago i made a reservation for quite a large group in the dining room. When we arrived we were told the dining room had been booked for a large party. No one had contacted me about this ahead of time. Luckily there was a large table available in the bar. Fine. This time, i made a reservation for 4 for a special dinner in the dining room. When we arrived the hostess didn't know anything about the reservation, didn't check us off a list, but there were lots of tables in the dining room. Great!
Next: half way through the dinner the staff started setting up all of the center tables into one long table right next to us. About 20 to 25 people came in and some kind of lecture took place with the lecturer practically yelling to the group, for the next 30 to 45 minutes, walking around the table numerous times so everyone in the group could see whatever was on her ipad! Yelling the whole time! The 4 of us could barely hear each other at our own table. I have to say it was an awful experience. And not one word from the staff! Some manager at Kells made a bad decision about this.
I don't think I can ever see my way back to Kells! It's too bad because I love the food and general ambiance. But these experiences are too much when there's plenty of other restaurants in Portland! Oh, and this was a $175 meal!
A taste of Ireland with Portland charm... My wife and I enjoyed a pleasant dinner at Kells in a quiet corner (thanks to the staff). The ambiance was genuinely Irish Pub with good drink and good spirits. The food was excellent traditional Irish fare - Fish and Chips and Shepherd's Pie. Three nice pieces of cod were in light breading and the chips and fish were served hot with tartar sauce but malt vinegar was available on request. The shepherd's pie was rich in beef and had crusted potato with demi-glaze; more vegetables would have been nice but the flavor was excellent. Service was prompt and very friendly without being intrusive. We were there for conversation and food but the ambiance was collegial and promised a good evening typical of such pubs.
The fish and chips were bland. Not super well-kept up bar. Service was really bad/ nonexistent in the cigar lounge until numerous requests for help, even from a fellow patron.
Fifty minutes for our food. The waiter only checked in when we caught his attention Which was a challenge. Ignored when we needed more than a plastic cup of water. Very LOUD. I expected it to be busy because of the parade but wonder if Kells has any experience with large events at the waterfront. ;-)
My husband and I had a wonderful evening at Kell's. It was our first time dining there and the food, service and atmosphere was just what we hoped. I ordered the Reuben sandwich which was top-notch, and the cucumber salad which accompanied it was such a nice surprise. My husband got the steak on a stone, and pronounced it to be the best steak he had ever eaten. The wait staff was excellent, they make you feel like you are appreciated and also were knowledgeable about the menu. Headed downstairs after dinner, my husband enjoyed a great cigar and a glass of cognac, a perfect ending to our evening. Thank you Kell's--we are definitely going to return!
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We are so glad you joined us last weekend and took advantage of some of our favorite things that we offer! Looking forward to having you back soon.
Very very good meal!!
Will go back again!!
Our new favorite place to eat. We’ll be regulars to Kells after absolutely loving this place and its excellent food!
We'll have a seat ready for you any time Jason
Awesome place for food and drinks. Everything is so fresh and amazing. Staff was super friendly and live music was awesome. Definitely coming back!
Our service was wonderful along with the food. We book the ghosts & brews tour beginning at this place and were not disappointed with Kelly’s! Would definitely return!
My wife and I drove 60 miles to have dinner at Kell’s on Mother’s Day.
The corned beef and cabbage was tremendous as usual!
The service left a lot to be desired.
We ordered soda bread with dinner but did not receive the bread when our dinner was served and had to ask the waitress to bring it to us.
I had to walk over to the bar and ask for additional coffee.
I ordered bread pudding at the end of dinner but after waiting ten minutes and the dessert had not been delivered, I walked over to the waitress and cancelled the dessert and asked for the final bill.
I did not leave any tip due to the poor service.
Absolutely a great place to go, it's worth the money. Best mother's day in a long time.
We hd an OT resevation, but it didn’t seem like they actually had a table set aside for us. Luckily, there were a couple available. It was great food and a great server worked with us. Took good care of my mom and her walker. Unfortunately, there was a Timbers game and it was VERY noisy, so we couldn’t really chat. For our group that was a bummer. But everything else was great.
Excellent cornbeef and cabbage. The lamb stew was very good. Enjoyed the cigar bar and then listening to music later that evening. Cant wait to go again.
Kells is my favorite! My server was amazing and made my birthday dinner well worth it!
Great food! Service was a bit slow but adequate.
Service, food and drinks were great both upstairs and downstairs....definitely worth it!!
Using Open Table to make a reservation during a very popular window of time was awesome! I was able to look at and select from open times. We got right in and seated, despite the huge line of people waiting outside. The food was delicious, we could hear the music from the pub (and it wasn't too loud in the restaurant), and they did not rush us through to turn over the table. It was a great evening!!
Celebrating St. Patrick's Day! Highly recommend the lamb stew and shepherd's pie!
The Bread pudding is definitely worth the trip. have someone split it with you.
Great food service was great i was just like being in a pub in dublin best fish and chips i have had
I would not only recommend Kell's to a friend I would take them there.
Best clam chowdah in Portland!!!!!
Kell’s is an institution in Portland, and the top Irish pub I’ve been to on the U.S. West Coast. Great drink, great food, great servers. In addition to Guinness, they have a host of their own brews and an amazing selection of whiskeys.
Only complaint? They have a cigar room in the basement, and no means of stopping the stink from coming upstairs into the restaurant and bar. Fastest way to ruin a meal for me is cigarette smoke; worse is cigar smoke. It’s 2019; please find a way to keep the smoke out of the bar and dining room. While I’d still recommend Kell’s to friends, I won’t be back until they figure this out and make a change.
The shepherd’s pie was EXCELLENT! A little expensive for the portion size. But it tasted great. So did the raspberry sour! Excellent.
Best Sheppards pie I have ever had. And the new steak on a stone was well presented and delicious; a true dinning experience.
Great place to gather with friends, both old and new!
Fabulous fresh food. Service was exceptional! A favorite when I am in town!
We thought the food was just okay - I had the squash risotto with salmon and the risotto was decent but the salmon was dry as the Mojave Desert. Service was good and the place has character, but the pub reeked of cigar smoke from the downstairs cigar bar. I hate smoke of any kind and having your clothes stink after a meal is a big turn off for me. I could be convinced to give it another go on the food, but with the stink, no way.
Food was ok but nothing special. The waitress was short with us for the rest of the visit after it was brought to her attention that a drink was incorrect.
We used to enjoy Kells quite a bit, but the cigar bar ventilation is apparently broken and the entire bar area including the tables. I've been a smoker for more than 30 years and it was bad enough that I couldn't stand it. My wife isn't a smoker and was significantly worse for her. The staff didn't appear to care that we were there at all and after 10 minutes we left with never having been approached by anyone. This is not how Kells used to be and we were very disappointed.
I had not dined at Kells in years, and was very pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food. However, the service was worse than almost any experience I've had in recent memory, which is especially surprising because we were in the restaurant, not the busy pub, and the restaurant portion was not very busy. We did not seem to have any one dedicated server, and we were often ignored for long periods of time. Portions of our order were forgotten, and we had to ask the kitchen server to correct it. That said, Kells took one item off our menu to make up for the poor service. All in all we had a good time and enjoyed our meals, but I would hope to get much better service on my next visit.
The Irish Coffee warms the inside. The Clam Chowder on Fridays is my favorite. Always feel welcomed there.
We enjoyed our time at the restaurant, but it was very busy and loud with the bar scene and people dressed as Santa’s, (a bit of a shock for non-city folk). The food was good, and the server brought out someone who helped my mom create a gluten free dinner. More veggie options/gluten free would be nice to have on the menu, especially as there are many dishes from Ireland that are both of these. We liked that many food items are local.
