Kellari Taverna Ratings and Reviews
This was my first visit to Kellari Taverna during a business trip, but I will return, as it was quite good. I had the grilled bream, sautéed spinach and the baklava for dessert. All were excellent. Service in the restaurant was outstanding. I found prices to be a little high, but maybe not for DC, and the food and service certainly offset the slight sting of the bill.
There are plenty of great brunch options in DC and Kellari Seafood Taverna is one of the best. Bottomless mimosas, champagne, Bellinis, or Bloody Marys start of the meal nicely after that, three courses of ambrosia. The grilled calimari, spanakopita, frittata, and eggs Benedict with smoked salmon are all winners!
We had the prix fix brunc, which included 3 courses and unlimited cocktails (Mimosa, Bloody Mary). We were very impressed with the food and the restaurant - the wait staff was very attentive and they did not skimp on the cocktails! The food was good, as was the ambiance - we did not feel like we were stuffed into a small space, but rather like we could have a private conversation while sitting at a table in the middle of the room. Overall it was a very nice meal out at very nice restaurant.
We chose Kellari Taverna since we had just lived in Greece for three years and missed the traditional Greek fare. Kellari's food was very good and authentic, even down to the types of greens used in the salads. The cheeses were superb. The wine list was ok, although I would have like to see more quality Greek wines on the menu instead of just the standard ones. The restaurant seemed popular and was crowded and loud. Unfrotunately, the prices were relatively astronomical for what we were used to paying for the same food in Greece, although we expected that, since quality food is generally much cheaper in Greece than in the United States. But, we were still shocked at the prices for such standard things.
I’m a long time customer here and this is the first time I’ve been disappointed. The spanakopita was good and my friend enjoyed the salmon. I had the seared tuna with fresh vegetables and was not prepared for a huge green salad with pimentos - and four slices of cold tuna on the side. The salad was very tasty and I enjoyed it, I did not eat the tuna. My Bloody Mary was exchanged for one with less vodka and spice and it was good. I’m sorry the Restaurant did not identify the seared tuna would be on a salad.
Kellari was FABULOUS. We took a friend who had never had the pleasure of being at Kellari. She was treated royally (we had requested a table for handicapped accessibility); she was delighted with the accommodations, the service, the reception, the wait staff especially, the FOOD (which was EXCELLENT), and the ambiance. Thank you for welcoming her and my husband and me so generously, as the Greeks do. I give you 5+ starts.
Food was good. Lunch portions were small
relative to the price. I would have ranked it a "5" but for
the surprise that having ordered the fish and expecting (based
on the price) the (usual) entire fish, the large plate had a relatively small
fillet of the fish. If one adjusts his/her expectations to a higher than
usual ratio of cost to value, it will be all great!
We enjoyed our Sunday brunch. The staff was both friendly and knowledgeable. The food is good.
Summer months there is outdoor seating. Kellari's is an excellent restaurant for fresh fish as well as Greek specialties: Including lamb dishes! If vegetarianism is your preference, one finds enough meatless items on the menu.
I've been to Kellari Taverna in NYC several times but this was my first time at the D.C. location for a ladies happy hour. We made reservations at 3P, which is a weird hour between lunch & dinner, but it worked to our advantage. We were able to order bar bites from the Happy Hour menu and the prix-fixe business lunch. Kellari's HH is quite a find with a very good selection of wines and bar bites--we had the trio of dips and the dolmades (stuffed grape leaves) and both were very good.
The prix-fixe lunch was outstanding! I had grilled sardines as an appetizer and the grilled lavraki (branzino) as my main. I love Kellari's traditionally Greek treatment of fish, simply grilled with a side of lemon allowing the fresh fish to shine. There were several desert options but we both got the yogurt cake to go.
In summary, Kellari Taverna is a solid choice with lots of seafood options. The sort of place that can easily become a go-to.
P.S. If you sign up for their mailing list, you'll get an free bottle of bubbly for your birthday or anniversary. I booked a birthday brunch last year at the NYC restaurant and a bottle of sparkling wine definitely came in handy :)
