"Many people ask me if this is Greek Cuisine , and I don’t know what to compare it to, either to Greek cuisine of 1962 or 2009, but my answer is a seafood restaurant with a Greek Flare to it " Chef Gregory Zapantis.
"Our Menu of Simply Grilled fish but simplicity with elegance ! " Chef Gregory Zapantis.
"we are bringing to the people of Washington Something they haven’t experienced before " Chef Anthony Acinapura.
Kellari Taverna is very sensitive to sustainable seafood.

Authentic grilled Greek seafood.
Can’t think of better seafood anywhere in DC.
Great service very over priced
I love this place! I have had a few business lunches there which have been excellent. But have also taken a very large group there for dinner - also excellent! The food is extraordinary and the service is very professional. I even love the tiny complimentary cookies on the way out! Any one who dines here will not be disappointed!
I got the special—Atlantic
Chard wirh vegetables. The fish was delicious! Will go back for sure.
We had requested outdoor seating and were disappointed to find that they no longer offer this as “they were too busy“Please consider re-instituting outdoor seating
Went for our son’s graduation. Picked it because we saw good reviews and we like Greek food. Have been to Greece and we eat at many good Greek restaurants in Miami
However, this place today was really bad
Risotto was the worse I’ve tried in my life
Linguine was ok
Fish was ok
Way overpriced for the quality of the food and the place the zero vibes
Waiter took the risotto back and told me he would sent me a linguini and he charged me as well
Would not go back at all
It was a 3 star experience for us. We were expecting Kellari DC to match the NYC location but it fell short in most categories... except price, the price was the same as Kellari NYC ;-). The Good: High-end decor, great authentic menu, nice waitstaff, nice hostess. The Bad: low occupancy, stale wine by the glass, and slightly above-average seafood dishes that took over an hour. I think ‘the bad’ can be easily corrected if Kellari DC gets the foot traffic up and I really hope they do because I love the menu.
Really great meal! Delicious, fresh, lovely presentation, wonderful & friendly staff. Perfect evening.
I wanted to try a new restaurant in downtown DC and found this one intriguing. Went for a late lunch and enjoyed my three course lunch for $29.95. Had sardines, sea bass and a Greek yogurt. All were very tasty and well prepared! The restaurant was basically one huge room with a bar on the side. There is a parking garage directly next door. I would recommend trying this spot for a quality healthy meal!
We arrived “just in time,” we were told, before several large groups came in. Well, looks like our timing was bad. We both ordered grilled sardines (which for some inexplicable reason had also been floured and deep fried, totally destroying their texture). Then we waited 45 minutes from the time our appetizers were cleared until we gave up and started walking out... just when the Dover sole came out of the kitchen. Flavor wasn’t great, timing made me late for travel, waiter said manager (who couldn’t be bothered to come to the table to apologize) offered only a 50% price break for our trouble. I insisted that the entrees had to be free of charge, and that’s what we settled on with the waiter. The waiter was apologetic about the delays but could not get it done. I had been to the DC branch 4-5 times previously, and the NYC branch a number of other times, but after this service and food experience I won’t be returning.
Service needs more professional teachings among water server to head waiter. Etiquette services in particular when not to interrupt guests. Timing is everything. Overall food was excellent except don’t order the Dover Sole as it was dry and tasteless with freeze dried taste. Poor choice. Rest is excellent.
Excellent food. Great service and absolutely nothing to complain about.
This is a really good restaurant for the quality of the food and the service.
Excellent lunch special - good value for money. Very tasty fish dishes.
Kellari Taverna does a good brunch, with a variety of pleasant choices befitting carnivores and vegetarians alike. It's bustling and the dining room is handsome. Service is attentive without being clingy.
Food is very good, though it doesn't push cuisine boundaries or get seriously exciting. But not everything has to be exciting. A solid reliable meal in a lovely environment is a good thing in itself.
The Mother's Day Holiday Brunch Pre-Select Menu was a great value. The food was excellent, presentation elegant and the Mimosas were perfectly prepared. Kellari Taverna is definitely a great place for a family and holiday celebration!
Over priced. Side vegetables all bad. All sides were overcooked and not good we ordered asparagus, it was over cooked we ordered daily vegetables over cooked and tasted bitter the risotto was horrible .
Appetizers were great.
Great extra. Little warm. Food was was great.
We went to this restaurant for Greek Easter. Normally, the food and the value here are outstanding. But on this occasion I was disappointed. For a $69 per person fixed price, there were no cocktails included as there have been in the past. And the wines by the glass were quite pricey. Both soup choices were too salty as, very sadly, was the lamb shank, which I had really been looking forward to. The grilled calamari was also disappointing. It was was a bit chewy and tasted like it had mated with a char-broiled burger.
However, the octopus appetizer was absolutely delicious, as was the spanakopita. Both desserts - the baklava and the galatobouriko - were also very, very good. So it was hit or miss, which is not typical for this restaurant. And that was too bad.
One consistently pleasant part of our dinner was the waiter. Chris was personable, attentive, and just an all-around nice guy.
Food was excellent as well as service
We sat a long time and the waitress was very nice
Excellent fresh seafood. Hummus and olives set on table delicious. Great Greek wine. Would definitely go back.
WONDERFUL FOOD AND SERVICE. THOUGH IT IS A LITTLE EXPENSIVE. THANKS.
Absolutely delicious food!
Great experience overall -- food, drinks and service! I always enjoy Kellari and will continue to recommend to friends.
Food was excellent. Loved the grilled calimari!!! Best way to serve it. Spanakopita was excellent. Only downside with a 9pm reservation is that they were out of a lot of their fish choices. Otherwise a great night all around
We enjoyed seeing a little Micky mouse run around the dining area.
Excellent seafood. The hummus was superb. While the fish I picked on the menu was no available, the alternate was very good.
Yes I do recommend and we took a friend to dinner for her birthday celebration. Fish was perfect and wait staff were incredible. Love this place.
Great food & drinks....will definitely be back very soon.
Too expensive for genre. Waiter very uptight. Not my kinda place. More of a place for upity people.
We must have hit Kellari on a bad kitchen night. The main course seafood wasn't hot and it took roughly a half hour to be served the main course so no way were we going to wait an extra 5 or 10 minutes to be served. We were a table of 5 and had a couple of waiters. Both were knowledgable and friendly and offered great wine recommendations. Sadly the kitchen ran out of baklava. Overall, you should go because when the kitchen releases the kracken, the dining is fantastic!
One of my favorite brunch spots. Excellent Greek food
Nothing Greek about it, bad food, overpriced.
The food was delicious and the restaurant is beautiful but a tad loud. We waited over two hours for dinner and had to ask quite a few times for drinks to be brought (took about 30 min to get a drink). The servers handled it ok, but honestly they should’ve brought us something to snack on or given a better answer than, “it’s coming, we’ve been busy”.
Can’t beat the Prix Fixe brunch deal on Groupon!
This is an excellent restaurant. The food was terrific, very good service, not too loud. I would definitely return the next time I am in Washington DC.
Was a wonderful time. We all tasted new foods, as well as enjoying favorites. Wait staff was attentive and managed to improvise a birthday dessert for my wife; candle in the Greek yougart. Our oldest grandson enjoyed his entree as well as our multiple selection of apps. First time here in DC. We've been to NYC restaurant several times over the years.
Our lunch at Kellari Taverna included two from out of town and was for business. It was a success and due in large part to the restaurant. We were seated promptly in a somewhat secluded corner which worked well for conversation. We all had the business lunch special which consisted of three courses and was reasonably priced. The food was outstanding, as was our server. I'd definitely recommend this restaurant.
Had the business lunch. Fish of the day as my main entree. It definitely tasted like it had been sitting out for a while/prepared much in advance. There are places with much greater value for $30 in downtown DC. Service was fine, ambiance was fine - just the food was not up to a super high level.
Wonderful place for lunch with great ambiance. Both our appetizer (grilled vegetables) and main course (Arctic Char) were delicious. Service was decent and the ambiance was lively but not overpoweringly noisy. The only issue we experienced was a rather terrible cup of coffee at the end of an otherwise delightful meal. It was weak and bitter, and quite surprising.
