"Many people ask me if this is Greek Cuisine , and I don’t know what to compare it to, either to Greek cuisine of 1962 or 2009, but my answer is a seafood restaurant with a Greek Flare to it " Chef Gregory Zapantis.

running out of compliments for this outstanding place--the most welcoming place in D.C.!
Have gone to that location twice. For a Greek restaurant, little Greek ambiance. No Greek music (even popular Greek music vs traditional) and no Greek speaking staff the second visit. Made a special fish request when I made the reservation a week earlier. Didn't seem to have looked at the request until we arrived. Not available. It's the only reason I go there. Told my first choice was sold out. Told my second choice, scallops, the chef did not like the look of them. I would not have told a customer that. My third choice, seafood rizotto was good. My wife mentioned the limited meat choices - only two selections. Wish the bread was more traditional Greek bread. The tarama was good. Melitsanosalata not so good. Overall overpriced for what you get. It's a shame as I would have liked to have been a regular.
We went to Kellari Taverna, as a test -- to try the food, since we are hosting a big birthday dinner here next weekend for 16. I discovered foods I hadn't tried before and it was all beautifully prepared. the Kellari Chips with Tzatziki were amazing -- like fried green tomatoes. the beet salad was excellent. We shared a grilled fish -- perfectly prepared.
Another fantastic experience. The service was exceptional and the food so fresh.
Kellari Taverna offers outstanding food and ambiance on K St - much nicer than its neighbors. A great place for an important business meal.
An excellent meal, especially the grilled octopus, with very good service.
The grilled octopus and dip dishes were really good! And the dessert of goat cheese, honey and nuts was superb!
This restaurant consistently provides outstanding food. The atmosphere is elegant, nicely decorated. Wait staff friendly and responsive. Probably not the best place for kids, but the wait staff tried to accommodate.
I have actually been to the brunch several times and every time it just keeps getting better. Next I plan on trying the Lobster Dinner because i hear it is amazing. I know for sure if dinner is anything like the brunch is will be DELIOUS!!
Nice location. Great service. Delicious food. And bottomless mimosas... what more could a girl ask for?
Excellent venue for business lunch. Variety of salad and seafood choices. Tasty. Great service.
We selected Kellari Tavern because of its location on K Street. The food was disappointing, given the price. The final tally was more than $100 for three salads and iced tea. The meal was undistinguished and one salad was not particularly fresh. The service was very good.
Always a fine dining experience with superb service. Faye took great care of us
We had a Saturday brunch. Our server was fabulous and so was the food.
I really loved this place, very authentic Greek food with an emphasis on seafood. Our waiter was wonderful (I wish I remembered his name) and he was great at helping pick out wines. My seafood risotto has a little too much octopus for my taste, but otherwise everything was delicious.
There is no friendlier and more accommodating bar than Kellari hands down. Best proof is the high number of regulars who come there. I know. I am one
Poor service ( the server was badly overstretched and the supervisor barely lifted his eyes from the computer). Food was indifferent (badly made crab cake and cold French fries, calamari with no taste).
Will not return
My go-to place for a business lunch. Food is always good, meals are healthy and not too much but incredibly fresh ingredients.
I have been there about 50 times and never tire of it.
The business three course menu is a very good deal.
Best brunch ever! The food was fresh and well prepared. Service was friendly and professional. The ambiance was great. Bathrooms were clean. Overall, it was a great dining experience.
Absolutely perfect! Our first time there and it won't be our last.
We had a very enjoyable experience. The food was excellent. The staff was great. The pricing was appropriate. We celebrated my daughter's birthday and had a wonderful time by all.
Excellent classic Greek took Greek business colleagues and they loved it.
i have meant to write before--there is no place that combines quality food with quality service and atmosphere like Kellari. To a person everyone who works there is exceptional. It is a joy to go there each time I do and will be there tonight in fact.
My husband, daughter and I were visiting DC for her college orientation and had dinner here. The grilled fish was so fresh and absolutely delicious! Our server was extremely helpful. She educated us on the fish and helped us determine the amount to order since the fish are sold by the pound. She pulled fresh fish from the ice and brought it to our table for us to view and discuss before making a decision. We ordered a Mediterranean Branzino and a Black Sea Bass caught off the coast of North Carolina. Both were flaky and cooked perfectly. We also ordered the spinach and gigantes. Our server brought us extra hummus and olives while we were waiting for our fish. It was a great meal and was actually very healthy.
Used their Groupon Sunday Night Lobster Dinner deal for a 3-course meal well worth the cost. Started with a glass of house wine (included) and their complimentary bread basket and mixed olives plate. Next came our apps. I chose grilled calamari and received a large serving of sliced, toothsome (but not rubbery) pieces with a nice char flavor. My wife had the soup special (cauliflower and mint) which she really enjoyed. We both chose the grilled (steamed offered as well) 1.5 Lb lobster which was well prepared and easily removed from the shell. Our Galaktoboureko (semolina custard-filled filo "pie") for desert was a good-sized portion with a drizzle of sweet syrup that made a nice completion for a tasty and filling meal. Recommended for food, service and nice ambiance.
Our waitress, Agnes, was so delightful and made the entire meal so pleasant and completely about us! I loved every second of this dinner!
We always enjoy dining at the Kellari Taverna but our last visit was particularly outstanding in terms of the service and the perfectly prepared fresh fish. The waiter went out of his way to discuss the aperitifs and wines and brought complimentary desserts.
Great, tasty, authentic, fresh, and a lot of variety Greek food. Prcey but worth it.
Wonderful food and excellent service.
Best restaurant experience in a long time! Portions are so generous. Food is fresh. Service amazing.
Excellent service, consistently (9 years) great good, easy conversation.
Food was OK. Rather pricey.
i had a nice time with good food mimosas and bellinis
I’ve eaten at Kellari a few times, dinner, happy hour, lunch. Each time the food is great and the service is unbelievably slow. Dinner took 3 hours (on a Thursday with reservations) and I had to get the hostess to find the waiter 4 times. For happy hour, the bar tender ignored us (empty bar) until I walked to the end of the bar and asked if we could order. Lunch was the best service but took 90 minutes for the business lunch.
I think it is too frustrating to go back which is unfortunately because they do a good job with the food.
A great meal, and delightful staff, the lamb salad is delicious
I’ve been trying to find a good sit down Greek restaurant in DC, so had high hopes for Kellari. It thoroughly disappointed on service, authenticity of food, quality of food, and price.
Excellent restaurant! Its "Thalassina" is a superb dish; perfect for lunch or dinner.
Always a safe bet particularly if you like seafood!
I do not usually write reviews for restaurants but wanted to submit one based on the terrible service I received during a recent lunch. The waiter, Edward, was so incredibly rude. He did not explain or provide adequate responses to questions and then when I turned down dessert, commented on my entree choice as being "quite large." It was absurd. It's a shame because I really like the food here, but would not risk getting seated at Edward's table again.
Their mushroom and corn risotto is delicious, as is the fresh fish. And, their prix fixe lunch and brunch menus are some of the best values in the area.
