Kefi Ratings and Reviews
We took friends out for their birthdays and to thank them for all the help they’ve given us over the years. They chose Kefi. It was our second time this month. It was superb. The food had wonderfully fresh ingredients and each course was a treat for the palate. And served the perfect temperature. Loved it.
We love Greek food and wanted to try a new restaurant on the Upper West Side. Dips with pita were really good. We needed extra pita, but it never came. Fish and dumplings were excellent.
Service is okay.....a little slow, but we weren't in a hurry.
We would go back.
We went on balloon night before the Thanksgiving Day parade. The place was a zoo. The table near the door was frigid. The service, always suspect, was overwhelmed: it took nearly an hour to get cold appetizers. The food, as always, is what has made Kefi worth revisiting despite its regular annoyances.
I love this restaurant, and have been enough times to know that you must sit in the upstairs dining room--it's lively and packed and has a beautiful ambiance. The downstairs dining room however, smells like cleaning products, is silent, and only ever populated with a handful of customers. It's pretty much where they dump patrons when the wait for upstairs is getting too long, but it's a miserable experience. After I made my reservation I called the restaurant to request a table upstairs and was told that wouldn't be a problem. So, you can imagine my disappointment when we arrived and were placed downstairs. We were told it would take at least 30 minutes if we wanted an upstairs table, but we had tickets to a show and didn't have 30 minutes to wait. I had made these reservations for a special occasion and was incredibly disappointed. The downstairs dining room probably accommodates 50 people and we were two of four people that got stuck eating down there. And it smells awful, like antiseptic. Not quite the lively and romantic date night I had in mind. The food was great and the service was great, but this dining room overshadowed the entire evening.
We had a wonderful dining experience in large measure thanks to our warm, knowledgeable and totally professional waiter, Damian.
His suggestions were no different then the best use of Insider Knowledge.
The sheep milk dumplings I ordered were the most unique treat ever.
The home made potato chips and the chocolate moose with homemade ice cream were to die for.
We’ll definitely be back!
My family had a reservation here for a Saturday night. Though we couldn't be seated in a booth at street level, we were given the option of the basement, which wasn't scenic but had a booth and was quieter. It's a big place and they seemed to be able to easily accommodate large walk-in groups. We took advantage of our early dinner to get the prix-fixe menu, we were all very happy with the dishes. Wine/beer list was ok. Service was good, but a little cheeky --definitely relaxed. The bathrooms were not super well-maintained, but staff was ready to attend to it when I pointed out the need. Probably wouldn't go out of my way to come back, but it fit the bill at the time.
Kefi is the place to come to for a delicious, reasonable, quick meal. My husband and I share the Kefi salad which is a variation on the standard Greek salad with a mix of olives, peppers, fennel, lettuce and tomatoes. Sometimes we share the mussels and share the whole branzino; sometimes we remember how much we love the mussels and each just get our own order. The mussels are fresh, perfectly cooked, well seasoned, and mixed with beans. Kefi's bread dipped into the broth from the mussels tops off our dinner perfectly.
The only down side to Kefi is that it is noisy. But since the service is good and the food is very good, we think the trip from our home on the Eastside to Kefi on the Westside is more than worth our time.
Food was very good, however towards the end of the meal, a customer came downstairs where we were dining with a dog. One of my guests is allergic to dogs and we weren't asked if there would be a problem, especially since the downstairs is very close quarters. I inquired if that dog was a service animal and they checked it out and said it was. Dog was not wearing a vest. I am all in favor of service animals, however the manager should have asked the diners if there was a problem with the animal being there. Luckily, we left shortly after and my guest did not have any reaction.
We particularly enjoyed the creative inclusion of vegetables into the dishes we ordered - there was a garlicky olive oil grilled okra dish that we shared as an appetizer - it was surprisingly amaze balls! Then he had a lamb chop dish with fantastic broccoli rabe, and I ordered a mussels special with gigante beans and kale that was wonderful. My only complaint would be that all the two-top tables were squeezed right next (as in 6 inches at most away) to another two-top, and we were able to hear in detail the conversation of a couple of pretentious investment finance sector types who employed no filters when discussing the failings of everyone else they knew in the industry. A little space would have been nice. Otherwise, the service and food were great. I would go back, and recommend Kefi to people I care about.
Restaurant was empty, but food took forever. Lipstick stains on glasses. Even after double-checking, order was brought of staggered and wrong. We were then up-charged for a special we didn't ask for and the server fought us on the price. I'd heard such great things from friends, but it was such a disappointment!
Very mediocre food with a limited menu. Tables are right on top of you with a noise level that requires either super hearing or no table conversation. Lack of A/C just adds to the discomfort. Service was also way below average. There must be a 100 better Greek restaurants in the area. Never again for us.
food was disappointing. 6 hungry eaters left the hummus appetizer 1/2 eaten. souvlaki was underspiced. special greek salad was boring. ingredients didn't pop. feta crumbles instead of chunks a cheap and disappointing way to make a greek salad. service staff is undertrained. waiter tried to be helpful, but didn't know his menu. based on this experience, don't expect them to last. could have been an off night, but don't feel need to give them another chance. one bright note - the special cocktail with the grilled pineapple was delicious.
