We like Kefi because it’s a restaurant with something for everyone on the menu, and it’s multi-purpose like a Swiss Army knife. A date, lunch with moms, Greek Easter brunch, a night out with the ladies…it all works.
We are not often in this neighborhood and needed a restaurant that did not just open for dinner as we had an 6pm appt. for a performance. We were delighted with Kefi. The menu is quite extensive as well as authentically Greek. WE loved the abundance of vegetables, both on their own and as part of the main course. Octopus and seafood served with beans, wonderful spinach seasoned with onions as a side dish, and a special of roasted cauliflower with pinenuts, yogurt, pomegranate seeds and tangerine. Wonderful. The salad was delicious and I particularly liked their brand of feta cheese. Much smoother and creamier. The lavraki was delicious. We were too full for dessert but the cappuccinos were good. I could see myself going out of my way to eat here again.
Food is OK, portions are generous, mussels are quite nice, the room is dark and tend to be noisy at peak times. The service is quite rough around the edges, the servers seem to be quite annoyed sometimes.
Inattentive wait staff and overpriced food
I have been to Kefi many times and love the food and many of the servers but this time the waiter was not listening to what I asked for when it deviated from the exact dish and did not bring the extra sauce on the side of the Bronzino. I could sense that he was not putting the customer first and was macho which did not permit him to truly listen. Rarely does this happen and it will not stop me from going back since the Bronzino is excellent as are many other things.
We loved it can’t wait to go back
Delicious. Kefi translates as joie de vivre, and so it is!
This was our sixth visit to Kefi and we were sadly disappointed. The food has gone downhill in all respects except the bread. My calamari dish could have come from an Italian red sauce restaurant- heavily fried and not greek-style at all. The dip that accompanied it was nondescript lemon mayonnaise. The roasted artichoke special was almost inedible- the tough outer leaves had not been removed so very hard to cut never mind chew. My husband's whole roasted fish was oddly mushy. I hope it was an off night- but we won't go back.
Food is very good (meats are so well seasoned and the mezze’s are all fantastic) but the restaurant needs some fresh air. Try to avoid being seated in the basement!
The food is excellent. The main floor is lovely for dining. What I did not expect for my reservation for a party of five with out of town guests was to be seated in the rather drab, poorly decorated basement seating. Had I been told that this was to be our seating, I might have gone elsewhere. Mind you, the food is excellent, but for the prices charged the basement was not even close to value for an evening out. This was my first time at Kefi. I will go again AND make sure we are seated on the main level.
K ego is very casual. The meet all’s & Lamb were excellent. We enjoyed a bottle of Greek red wine. Will go back
Met some friends and all we ordered was delicious!
Very crowded, food took a long time to be served.
Everything was very rushed after food came.
Always excellent neighborhood restaurant and my go to place for meeting friend
Kefi is an easy going place, with very good food and great service. We enjoyed it.
Great food and attentive service. Highly recommend!
Excellent food. Good service. Satisfactory house wines.
We had a very nice server. Delicious fish. Not too noisy.
Family celebration of my birthday. Large party downstairs. Loved the food and the service was very accommodating and professional. Reasonable prices made it possible to splurge in octopus and more. LOVE THIS PLACE.
It took 1.5 hours and many requests to get our dinner. The restaurant was packed, but they should be prepared for this with more staff.
Food, good as usual. Service, the worst I have seen there. Over 1 hour to get our dishes. Asked to see the manager to find out the problem; never came to the table. I saw him texting, while the servers had to keep apologizing for such a poorly run restaurant and kitchen. Too bad, because the food is actually good.
Very disappointed with the service. Surprised because last visit was great. I don’t think the waiter understood English well, but then don’t hire them. Sorry
After reading New York Magazine's description of this place, I am now completely flummoxed by how devastating incorrect it is. "After two years of turning away practically pitch-fork-wielding mobs of souvlaki-starved customers they didn’t have room for, Kefi’s [owner/chefs] have traded up to a bigger space." I think that they must have been turning away those people because they were unhappy with their positively inedible souvlaki and deplorable service. The state of disarray and decrepitude of the restrooms make Penn Station look charming. Google describes this establishment as "cheerful, rustic decor matches the down-home & reasonably priced Greek cuisine." Please tell me where THAT restaurant is because where I ate was bleak, crumbling, and depressing.
Popped in for a quick meal while finishing up some work late on a Saturday; excellent! Was able to order quickly (which was great, I was starving), got my food very quickly, and despite it being crowded it wasn't too noisy to get work done. Great spot.
The food was good, not great. Good neighborhood restaurant.
The upstairs was very noisy. The downstairs was much quieter. Our server was excellent but overwhelmed with too many tables. The food was great.
The service was very disappointing. The entrees took about 30 minutes to arrive after they cleared the appetizer. One of the meals was incorrect and sent back. The waitress said it would be a minute and then it took over ten minutes. They were not apologetic.
Had a great early dinner on Sunday evening.....food was delicious, good service, great time
Delicious food. Good service. Nice lively atmosphere.
Didn’t honor reservation. Had to wait 45 min past reservation time. Once we finally got seated it took forever to get our food
We ate at Kefi on Saturday night. It took 1.5 hrs to get our meal. We were about to walk out.
As always, great food, great service, but the whole place needs a face lift. It is too dark, no character, no ambience. we only go there for a consistently good food and quick service, but we wish it were a little bit more pleasant inside so we could come here more often with friends.
The food was ok, chicken was undercooked. My waitress wasn’t very attentive, nor polite.
The food was great and filling. We especially loved the steak and meatballs. The noise level was a little loud and it was difficult to hear.
The food was delicious--especially the ricotta dumplings and the mixed grill. The service was a little slow, but the place was packed, so it was understandable. Kefi was crowded but very cozy and welcoming--we would definitely come back when we're on the UWS!
Food is good, but not great. Service was terrible. It took forever for a waiter to come over to us, forever to order, and forever to get the check. Not in a hurry to return.
Greek Easter with my father was a lovely experience.
The food was VERY flavorful, staff friendly and efficient.
Granted this review is written when I was treated at Kefi both times. Still, the food is excellently portioned and of great quality for the price. Service is attentive and while atmosphere is a bit loud, it's not too hard to hear due the tables being a litter shorter in width.
Food was lacking flavor and price was extremely high for quality of food. I ordered the whole grilled Branzino, it was small with barely any meat on it. Martinis were a thumbs down
