Kee'i Cafe has been one of our "go to" places for years and we have enjoyed each and every time and with this last visit we introduced it to a long-time friend who had never dined there. Kee'i is a small restaurant, a husband & wife operation, with many regular patrons. Do not expect a view but do expect a good meal at a reasonable price, usually a good selection of wines not necessarily on the menu and most evenings, live music.
The Brie appetizer is one of our favorite starters, there is always a fresh catch special or two with various preps. Our entrees included the Ono fish special with lemon/butter/caper prep; the seafood pasta dish and old fashion pork chops (2)...all quite delicious. There is a corking fee if you choose to bring your own wine and they have a full bar.
The location is easy to miss, but if it means turning around, it's worth it. There is a second level parking lot where the main door is located. I would suggest reservations, especially during the high season. And, occasionally, one of the patrons sits in with the musicians and has a great voice! A bonus with dinner.
I’ve been there the last two years and it’s been great this year was just poor service and food was mediocre not impressed . Don’t know that I would go back again.
Service was slow since number of waitstaff was low in comparison to diners. Life music was relatively quite allowing pleasant conversation. Food was good; portions were large. Price was reasonable. Overall a pleasant casual dinning experience.
Great food, not so good for service, but worth it.
We returned again this year, music wS limited on Tuesday night. Food was good and service
Was nothing special. Nice views .
The food quality and menu were excellent. I had made reservations, but we still had to wait a bit for our table. I had the fish special which was excellent. They give great size portions and you can tell that they put thought into the preparation. Wine prices are reasonable as well. Would like to have gone back this trip, but they weren’t open the last two nights of our stay.
Keei Cafe is one of our go-to places for a great meal, good live entertainment-sometimes including a dining guest who has a terrific voice and does some tunes with the musicians...an added treat. Menu doesn't change much, but daily specials are worth consideration. A decently priced wine list. Don't expect a view, do expect a fine meal! A family run business that deserves support. Mahalo
Always enjoy, love the food and staff, just wish less noise.
Food was excellent as always. We had six in our party and and tried several different entrees and was outstanding in every way. Mango cobbler was back to its great portion with ice cream and delicious as was the Lava Cake. Service was good as this time there was an extra person so help serve the packed dining room.
Keei was a great choice. We sat outside and would have had a view, but it was a cloudy evening. We did have a reservation, but it did not appear to be necessary.
Ordered soup, full of seafood, which was large enough to share between two of us. I had the seared Ahi appetizer and a salad with shrimp and scallops, which was perfect as an entree. My husband ordered the combination with curried rice and ahi. He ordered it medium (I would suggest rare).
The entire meal was perfect, service was attentive and ambience was warm. It was the one evening we chose to have a restaurant meal, and it was he right choice!
Food was great.
Entrees were really good. Salads under-performed. Nice room although the live music was loud- made conversation difficult. Service: we’re on vacation in a tourist area so our expectations aren’t high, but we were seated in the corner next to the broom and dustpan which apparently are part of their room decor, and our waitstaff person was, um, clearly wanting to be elsewhere. The other two waiters gamely tried to compensate. Made the whole experience sort of strange and mostly “meh”.
Slow service. Excellent food.
As always, our experience was lovely. Our friends were celebrating their 50th anniversary so it was special, indeed. We go at least twice every year while we’re on island.
Our 5:00 reservation for Valentine’s Day began promptly at 5:00. Several others had the same thought and were there at opening!
The restaurant was built BY the owners, long time Hawaiian residents! It’s family run and very homey atmosphere.
Because several couples sat down at the same time, there was a little bit of delay in having the waitress take our order. It may have been better if she got their drinks only first. Then ours. Then go back to them to get their dinner and / or appetizer orders. We did have water but no bread or anything else!
There’s usually live music but the band was going to some other place on Valentines’ night...
All in all it’s close by Kealakekua and Captain Cook, has lanai seating, is beautiful inside and the food was excellent! I ate way too much! Here there are plenty of fish options and tofu dishes for vegetarians/ vegans. My kinda place!
There were still lots of meat and poultry offerings to choose from also! The dessert menu is extensive and great too!
We read the reviews on tripadvisor on this place and decided to try it. It was great! It's parking lot and entrance are in the back of the building on the main street. We had reservations and were seated almost immediately when we entered and were allowed to pick our table. It was well decorated and lighting was dimmed so it had a nice ambiance. We ordered baked brie appetizer which my husband and I both loved and was just the right amount for 2-4 people to share. Very good beer, wine and specialized cocktail list and we decided to order wine and both our selections were good. Husband ordered and loved his pork chops and veggies and mashed potatoes which were seasoned just right and had just the right amount of doneness and texture for the veggies. I ordered the ribeye steak and veggies and mashed potatoes and the steak was done perfectly medium with pink in the middle and was juicy. The menu had a good variety of choices and all of them looked good to try. Dessert cheesecake was very good.
Waiter was smiling, gracious and attentive. We both decided that if we lived nearby we'd come to this restaurant often.
As always, the food was excellent. However, the service was poor. I had to remind the owner that our appetizers had not arrived. He went to the kitchen to get them for us, but it was so late that the soup was merely warm, and our dinner arrived just a few minutes later. I absolutely hate that, as it feels Iike a cheap café. I then ordered another drink and 10 minutes later the owner stopped by and asked if I wanted another drink. After the appetizer fiasco they at least gave the drink for free. I will still return to Keei Café, but it really needs to up its service to justify the pricing.
We went here with our good friends because all of us love this restaurant. It was our 50th Wedding Anniversary and the food, wine and company was wonderful. The desserts were out of this world.
It’s a beautiful setting and the food is good. We had a reservation and it still took a while to get seated. We were there for nearly and hour before we got our food.
Have been to Ke'ei many times. I think it was busier that ever so service was very sporadic. Ran out of iced tea after the first serving. Asked for a refill repeatedly and took forever for them to finally say we have none. The fish portion was overcooked and very skimpy compared to past times.
Great setting. Loved the open air feel. Missed the live music. We were a little too early.
Great little spot. We particularly liked the eggplant rolls. They were super delicious. Busy place. Wise to get a reservation
We always make time to eat here at least once when we visit Kona. The fresh catch of the day with the chef's special sauce of the day is always delicious and perfectly prepared, and the Ahi Katsu is a must! Excellent and creative food, good service and a beautiful dining room.
Keei Cafe never fails to produce great food at reasonable prices. The duo guitars were terrific. Highly recommend.
Something has changed at Keei Cafe...I won't go into too much detail, but it is not the place I have been going to and recommending for 16 years...
Just lovely, as always.
Lovely, friendly ,delicious food...a bit slow on service but wonderful feeling so you don't mind. Would make the drive any time to get back to a bit of the Hawaii I remember. Loved this restaurant.
Keei Cafe is one of our go-to places for great food. This is a real hideaway place on highway 11, use a good map app to find it. A steep driveway to the second floor dining area. Make no mistake, you're not coming here for the view-maybe a glimpse of a sunset-but you're here for dinner, the meal severed by the husband/wife/family run business.
We've tried everything on the menu and love it all, especially the daily fresh catch special. Chances are good Bob, the owner, will be your server as well. Last friday (1/5) all of the tables were taken, so reservations are really suggested because this is also a small place. Live music most nights and even a regular dinner guest does some nice tunes with guitarists.
Give it a try, we like it!
Good food. Odd service. Reservations don't really mean anything. First come first served.
Consistent local favorite. All around good choice for dinner.
Had 2 dinners here while on vacation in late December. Both were delicious.
This is our favorite restaurant. Worth the drive to Kealakekua. The owners are very friendly and the music is great. They use local ingrediants in their menu. We love coming here, and plan on retruning soon.
Friendly service. Large and fair priced cocktails. Excellent food. Reasonable prices in a high price area. Nice live music.
Lovely Hawaiian decor, friendly and efficient service, fine tunes from a fun singing duo, and absolutely exquisite and delicious meals! Everything was superb! We love this place!
We were hunting for a restaurant outside of Kailua-Kona. We found this lead on OpenTable. It's an easy drive (8 mi) to Kealakukea. A good dining option if you are going to the Aloha Theater.
We found Keei Cafe many years ago and it quickly became one of our local favorites. A bit hard to find the first time, but once there the owners/operators prepare delicious meals at a fair price. Local fish specials are always available with a variety of preps, the lemon/butter/caper one is our fav. Great apps and a limited wine list but daily special wines on display for choosing. Seating is small, there is no view to speak of, but we come here for the food. There is live music most nights and on our last visit one of the guests stepped up to do several wonderful tunes with the two mellow musicians. All in all, this is a quiet gem tucked away on the second floor of a building just off the highway so follow directions to get there because it is well worth it.
Definitely on our "A" list of special places to have a really good meal.
My fish was prepared perfectly and served over mash potatoes , spinach, and vegetable medly. My friends had the pork chops and the lamb, which they enjoyed greatly. Indoor outdoor seating was very pleasant. Would go back given the chance.
It is a lovely place. Nice cocktails, easy going staff And delicious, simple dishes done well.
This is our go-to place when we want to go out for a nice dinner when visiting Kona. Never disappoints. Love the food and ambiance.
Absolutely love this place and come back each time we're on the Big Island. My husband and I both had the ahi fresh fish special, each prepared a different way. Both were excellent. Salads are fresh, tasty and larger than most. Wines by the glass are relatively inexpensive and the selection is small but adequate. We were also treated to beautiful, live local music played at a perfect soft volume. Only complaint was the waitress bringing my husband the wrong order, but she apologized and the kitchen very quickly corrected the error. Would definitely recommend this place.
