Kaya Ratings and Reviews
We went here for a birthday and it was very good. We all liked all of the dishes but it was nothing special. I was a little surprised there was no mention of the birthday even though it was on the reservation and they mentioned it when they called to confirm the reservation (and we even bought multiple desserts!). I would not go here for a special occasion again. It's just a nice Pgh bar, with very tasty -but not particularly special- food.
Kaya continues to be one of my favorite restaurants in the Burgh. The food is always outstanding and consistent no matter how many times we go back. We have meet friends there for dinner and they always comment about how good it is. The wait staff is very good and knows the menu and is willing to offer suggestions as well. Will continue to go back and also recommend to people.
The setting is casual but warm and inviting. The service was attentive and friendly. The menu features some interesting vegan options. All of our entrees were excellent. The vegan Chile Relleno was outstanding. The chocolate bread pudding was average. However the Ancho Chile Chocolate Lava cake was excellent. Overall, it was a great experience. If your palate is receptive to some spice, then this is definitely a place to try.
Food was delicious, (except for the guacamole -- that was a disappointment). Service was eh. It felt like our server was annoyed that he was our waiter...which doesn't make sense because we ordered a lot of food so that means you're getting a good tip as long as you're nice enough.
Would definitely recommend. Nice atmosphere and menu items are different from most restaurants in Pittsburgh.
Went with my husband and have been to Kaya many times before. I had the grilled salmon with roasted vegetables that was fantastic. It was served over an eggplant purée that was incredibly tasty and salmon cooked perfectly. I usually get the rainbow salad that is great too but glad I changed it up tonight. My husband really enjoyed the steak with chile relleno. I love how they incorporate fresh ingredients and herbs to make their food so flavorable. The service is great and very consistent. Will continue to be regular customers.
My wife and I booked a 7:45 pm reservation on a Friday night for a date. We ended up arriving at the restaurant at 7:15 pm. Since we were early our table wasn't ready so we sat at the bar and ordered drinks and appetizers until then. The bar tender and the food was fantastic. When our table was ready our waiter didn't disappoint either. He was very down to earth and fun. He made the night a very good and memorable experience.
Myself and two other carnivores went for the Vegetarian Tasting Menu and it was awesome!
Every course was a complex blend of flavors and textures perfectly balanced. From the Beet Carpaccio, Butternut Squash Tortellini, Chaterelle and Leek Bread Pudding to VEGAN dessert of Grilled Peanutbutter Sandwich with Concord Grape Sorbet each course was perfect.
While the food was excellent, the service at Kaya was subpar. Our reservation was not kept, and the hostess neither apologized or offered us anywhere to sit or stand in the meantime while we waited to be seated (it was cold and wet outside, and we had to hover in the doorway).
Showed up early for our 5pm reservation. The lunch menu was still live. Ordered a couple happy hour drinks and an app while we waited for the dinner menu to come up. Waitress was attentive and friendly. Made excellent recommendations! Prices are right in the sweet spot between value and fancy. Will be returning more often!
My husband and I went to Kaya for date night and loved it! This was our second time there. The food is great, the service is really, really good and parking is only $6 for the entire night. My favorite is the dramatic lighting and drink choices they offer. The only bad thing I would say is the seating is pretty close to other parties, if their tables were just a little bigger it would be the perfect restaurant for Caribbean style dining in PGH,PA.
1. I was really pleased to be able to get an on-line reservation on the same day (a Saturday) as I e-mailed!
2. I actually stopped bye earlier in the day and requested a particular table for my agreed-upon time. Hostess was very accommodating. Then, when we showed up a lot earlier than the agreed-upon time, we were seated at a table of our choice - very important to me.
2. Both the wine and the size of the pour were very satisfying.
3. I had the salmon salad, which was tasty - the apples crisp, the lettuce fresh. My friend raved about her steak sandwich.
4. Our server was polite and came promptly when we needed her, but was not intrusive.
5. Because we came late afternoon, the noise level was not a problem, as I know it would have been later in the evening.
6. Prices were acceptable, and what I expected.
I'll be back!
I have been to Kaya several times and it never disappoints. The food is unique and very tasty (they make a mean and tasty burger!), the service has been pretty good in the past but on this last visit, our server Bradley was outstanding! He was incredibly attentive and on the spot with our orders, answered our many questions, and accommodated -along with the chef, a request on a gluten free need. We can't wait to go back to Kaya!
The only reason I didn't give 5 stars to this restaurant is because the noise level is a bit high. My friends and I don't mind it much but I know some people who would mind. Regardless of this, Kaya remains one of my favorite spots -especially before going salsa dancing at CAVO next door! :)
My husband and I frequently visit Kaya and always have an amazing experience. However, our last visit, October 21, we received the worst service that I think we’ve ever had. What normally takes 10-15 min to get our food (with an appetizer), we waited about an hour (and we got there at 8pm), and we didn’t order an appetizer. The area our server had was not that busy (there was a 4 person table open in the area), so I’m not sure what the issue was. The food is always spectacular, so we will return for that, but the service was not the best this.
We used the big burrito free entree here, and that combined with happy hour made for a very inexpensive meal. Our waiter, Kurt, was fantastic and attentive. I had flank steak with chili rellenos and it was beyond fantastic. My partner got fried chicken, and it was also quite good.
I love Kaya and come here often. I ordered the chile rellenos which is one of my standard favorite dishes when I go out to eat if it's available. However this time the seeds weren't cleaned out of the pepper which makes it extremely hot. Also the peppers were only filled with beans- there didn't seem to be Any cheese at all. The cheese is my favorite part! I will not be ordering this dish at Kaya again and we'll stick with some of the other standard favorites like the Currys and the conch fritters.
I’ve eaten at Kaya many times, usually lunch on Saturday which has always been very good. On a Monday at 5:00 pm we were seated quickly but no dinner menus were available. The wait staff was slow to get drinks even though the place was about 25% full.
Crispy fish tacos were barely warm and too heavy on the cabbage slaw. The actual pieces of fish were far more soggy than crispy. Seafood jambalaya also just warm and heavily salted.
I would have to re-think a return visit.
Loved the pulled pork nachos!!!!...Did not like the carrot soup though...very gritty. The wings were too vinegary this time. Last time they were the best, so
maybe just a bad batch.
I got the shrimp and grits. Very good.
The lava cake was good.
My husband liked his Kaya burger a lot.
We ate outside away from the speakers.
Very nice time!
