From Chewy Wagyu to Sushi Magic: A Rollercoaster of Flavors at Katsuya Miami My culinary journey through Katsuya Miami was a gastronomical thrill ride filled with ups and downs, twists and turns, and the occasional chewy Wagyu. Picture this: a sleek, contemporary restaurant, with decor as vibrant as the Miami nightlife, serving up the finest sushi in town. As I entered, I was greeted with the tantalizing aroma of fresh fish, ginger, and wasabi. I eagerly anticipated my meal, hoping that Katsuya would live up to the hype. First up, the Wagyu beef. A high-priced, highly sought-after delicacy, I expected nothing less than a transcendental experience. However, my excitement quickly turned to bewilderment as I chewed... and chewed... and chewed. The Wagyu beef, rather than melting in my mouth, proved to be as stubborn as a Miami traffic jam. Disappointment loomed. But fear not, fellow foodies! For as the Wagyu faltered, the sushi soared! Each bite was like a symphony of flavors, a tantalizing dance of fresh fish, perfectly seasoned rice, and delightful sauces. The spicy tuna roll was a fiery fiesta, the yellowtail sashimi a delicate delight, and the dragon roll an epicurean extravaganza. In the end, Katsuya Miami proved to be a study in contrasts. While the chewy Wagyu may have temporarily derailed my culinary adventure, the fabulous sushi brought me back on track, leaving me with an overall unforgettable experience. If it's sushi you seek, Katsuya Miami is a must-visit. Just be prepared for a wild ride!

My husband and I make a point to get a reservation at Katsuya every time we are in the Miami-South Beach area. The menu has a great variety of items. Everything we’ve tried so far, has been fantastic. The sashimi/sushi is very clean and fresh. And most importantly, the raw fish items are served dead cold, as they should be. We always try one of the Robata grill items; this time we had the eggplant. Delicious ! The service at Katsuya is always wonderful. There were three large groups (possibly all one party) that seemed a bit out of control and loud for a fine-dining establishment such as Katsuya. The staff did a great job of making their presence known, simply by doing a continuous walk through. And last but most certainly not least…. anyone who has read any of my reviews, knows how I feel about the cleanliness of a restaurant. If the bathrooms of a restaurant are dirty and poorly maintained, then the kitchen is probably dirty too. Katsuya gets an “A” for cleanliness. Thank you for a fabulous dining experience.

We were the first table sat in the restaurant for the night and waited 30 minutes for our drinks, having to ask multiple times for them. We had to ask multiple times where certain food items were that we ordered and waiting almost an hour for. My grandfather had to ask 4 separate times if his veggie tempura was going to be coming out and we had been there for an hour and a half at that point. They brought out several items that we didn’t order instead of the items we did order and did not listen to item modifications we made to specific items. There were also a couple items that were never even brought out to us so we had to ask them to be removed from the bill. Continuous careless mistakes throughout our entire dinner, it was a terrible experience.

    1. Service was attentive and prompt. 2. Sake choice was good, but tended towards high end brands. 3. Sushi was standard North American offerings 4. Sashimi choice appeared limited, with no stand alone sliced fish without some sauce or toppings 5. Yellow Tail should not be a description on the menu, as it is an ambiguous term in these parts. Apparently, Yellowtail can refer to an amber jack or a snapper. Prefer Japanese names for sushi and sashimi ingredients. 6. Good value for money.

I don’t know where to start…the food was just lousy…I ordered just nigiris, to start the chef mixed up the order..they send me fish I didn’t order and the ones I ordered were just low quality frozen tasteless fish….on top of it the rice was very heavy on vinegar…the only good thing about the dinner was the baked crab roll and the sake…the waiter was very attentive but with lack of knowledge about Japanese cuisine…I appreciated that he offered me a glass of champagne and the dessert for free but I didn’t accept them..all and all a very bad experience….I will not come back

One of the worst restaurant experiences on my life. The place has no ambience at all. Looks like a cheap joint. I ordered wagyu skirt steak and my husband ordered lobster dynamite. 5 minutes later the waitress came back and said they were out of the steak. I changed my order. Another 5 minutes she comes back saying they don’t have the lobster dynamite. I wanted to leave it that time but we already had our drinks. We made a mistake of staying. After changing our order once again we got Japanese Wagyu A-5 Striploin and dry aged ribeye. The wagyu was very good. The ribeye was cooked to our liking but about a third of it was not edible - very tough tendons that should have been removed. We spend a lot of money on an ok food and had to change our order 3 times due to the restaurant not having several items on the menu and the waitress not knowing that right away. The drinks were good and one of the deserts, chocolate cake, was very good. The caramel cake was just ok.

The server never poured our water and rarely poured our sake. We had asked for silverware. He went to get it and had it in his hand Ashe stood talking to a female staff member as our food got cold. I can stay home and poor my own water and sake. Possibly, he felt that he needed to do the bare minimum as he was guaranteed the 18% built into the price.

The service was slow, waited for seating, drinks, food. When it arrived the food was over salted. We sent it back, they put arugula on it and sent it back to us so we decided to leave before it got any worse. The redeeming factor was the supervisor(manager) Daniella— She heard our concerns and complaints and got us a into a better situation and was the best part of the experience- someone with compassion and the time and authority to listen and care. We will come back for a better experience under her new management in the future.

Located at the rear of the SLS hotel. A multitude of seatings were available and staff was friendly. Food quality was good, though the flavors were often very subtle, bordering underwhelming. The hotate nigiri and truffle ponzu ceviche were the two highlights of the night. Two of our starters arrived after the mains as there seemed to be some sort of confusion between waiter and kitchen. A non adjustable "gratuity" fee of 18% was applied to a party of 2.

Outstanding dinning night. Very attentive staff greeting us, pleasantly changed our table upon our request as we sat next to a large loud group of people. Our waitress was lovely, professional helping to discover different plates. Loved our appetizer Yellowtail with jalapeño delicious wanted to order another one!!tuna appetizer was also great. I also recommend the grilled lamb as it was perfectly cooked & tasted great. They also prepared the wague dumpling had a nice twist on it, enjoyed it. Final word of complement about Andrea the Maitre d’ great job! If she is the manager she earned it, if not she should, was the manager for the night👍

Beautiful room & lovely experience. King crab tempura was a disappointment as the king crab was hidden in batter that did not let the main ingredient shine. 18% gratuity was added to check of 3 guests and every step of payment from bill to credit card asked for gratuity which felt a bit misleading and shady.

What a fantastic dinner! Our great experience all started with such a fun and true expert with the menu. Zach... ask for him as it makes a big difference! Zach asked us questions, gauged our palate and guided us thru the menu to a fabulous meal. Fabulous appetizer, sashimi, sushi and rolls... we can honestly say the best Sushi and Sashimi we have ever had. Sashimi was fresh, full of color, perfect texture and unbelievable flavor. and.......for dessert go with the doughnuts! Thinking of them makes our mouth water! If in South Beach and want Sushi/Sashimi then make a reservation at Katsuya and make sure Zach is your waiter.

Servers are rude, will not bother to ask if you need anything. On top of that, our food took forever to come and when I asked for an update it turned into a rude response from the server which escalated into the manager coming in to argue with us as well. Worst experience ever, wouldn’t recommend it, food is not all that for what they charge.

We were staying at the SLS hotel and decided to try Katsuya. We have often eaten at the Bazaar, also in hotel and really love it. The food at Katsuya was fine. The waitress was great but we feel we made a mistake by eating at the sushi bar as the sushi bar chefs made zero eye contact or conversation with us thus it was like eating in the kitchen at a fancy restaurant. Usually eating at the sushi bar is very intimate and personal at other restaurants. They also did not acknowledge my husband’s birthday even though it was on the reservation. Miami Spice menu was adequate but not a great deal. The choices were not as healthy or interesting as we would like. I’d give the experience a 7 out of 10.
