Long wait even with a reservation and awful service. Tried to grab a bite before a concert. They forgot part of order as well. Wouldn’t recommend this as a stop before an LA Live or Staples Center show!

Food and atmosphere was good but service is spotty when it gets busy before game time. Food came out at various times. Never got my beer that I ordered.

We went before the Laker game. Seating was great. Ambience was great. We arrived early prior to our 5:00 pm reservation. Our server had no pulse he seemed liked he just woke up. (Eric) and we were bothering him. Food was great and drinks were tasty. Step up the service and it would of been an all around outstanding review.

Service was absolutely terrible. What a Shane as the food is excellent. My colleague received her food pretty fast, I waited about 20 Minutes to get mine so she waited for me but then had to start as her food was getting cold. She was done when Mike finally arrived and i didn't even time to finish as we were then rushing as it also took a very long time to put our orders in. We waited for our tea for about 15-20 minutes as well...

I will not return to this location of this chain restaurant. The service was beyond horrible and the server just kept saying "we have 3 kitchens so food comes out when it is ready - not all at once". We waited 30 minutes for a bowl of miso soup. And then after waiting 45 minutes for their Katsuya Special Roll, i finally went to the manager and it was learned that the waiter never submitted the order - even after asking him 4 times what the status was. everyone else had their meal and i was still waiting. When it finally was served, it was pathetic - a $19 roll that had no flavor and the smallest of sushi pieces ever seen. They never refilled our water glasses and barely cleared the table of dishes that were completed. I'm sure the restaurant does not care since it is a "hot spot" at LA Live and they have plenty of business but it will be without my return business

The high price tag makes this more of a "special occasion" place for me. That said, the sushi was fresh and delicious. We enjoyed every bite!

Do not recommend eating here before a show/game or if you’re on a time crunch! Had a reservation and waited 15 minutes to be seated. Bar was slow (40ish minutes for a drink!), food service came in waves, had to ask for more water multiple times. The food is excellent but service was terrible during a busy time. Under staffed/not prepared to accommodate the rush.

Too Much Noise, Too Little Flavor — One would think that a ”chic” Japanese restaurant jam packed on a Friday night in downtown LA live would deliver great tempura and sushi, reasonable ambience, and wine that reached the table before the entrees were fully consumed. One would be wrong. The shrimp tempura (appetizer) was adequate but not amazing, the sushi (rainbow, yellowtail) was mediocre with too much cucumber and not enough fish (less expensive to prepare that way I suppose). The Philippe Starck-designed space may be the “epitome of Japanese cool” but it was apparently designed with little or no attention to noise suppression. Packed as it was on a Friday night, Katsuya was quite possibly the loudest restaurant that I have ever had the displeasure to experience. We were surrounded by patrons yelling just to be heard. And the wine? The first bottle we ordered (a Wolfgang Grüner Veltliner, which is generally a good wine with Japanese food) hadn't been chilled (why put in on the menu then?). By the time the bar had chilled it and it had arrived (only somewhat chilled) we were well into our entrees. Unfortunately, it was also corked (this can sometimes happen so this is not a critique of the restaurant) and we had to send it back in exchange for a Martin Codax Albariño (a safe choice since Katsuya also offers it by the glass and we knew that they therefore had to have it chilled). Unfortunately the overworked (and constantly racing) waitress took so long to order it for us (what she should have done was get it immediately) that we had finished dinner without the wine having arrived so we had to cancel the order. A mediocre dinner consumed without wine immersed in a constant din? Not what we expected!

When booking this restaurant for a pre Staples Concert, I expected an upscale experience. What we got was loud, very crowded, and terrible service. I would think that a venue in this location would be prepared for before theater rush. They weren’t at all. Our server tried his best was was horribly over worked. Getting a cup of coffee alone took 20 minutes.

Been here several times. Whether or not you have a reservation the hostess will make you wait once you arrive. Pretty sure they think it adds to the exclusive vibe they hope to give off. Service is hit and miss. If the restaurant gets slammed it takes 30 minutes to get one roll. Last night the server said they ran out of sushi rice. For a sushi restaurant to run out of rice an hour in to its night is just stupid. The people watching is quite fun and we’ve seen a few people that are actors. The food is mostly good but I wouldn’t say that it’s amazing. For above average sushi, in a convenient location close to Staples center, that has good people watching go for it.

We chose this restaurant for Japanese Cuisine in the LA downtown area near our hotel. The presentation and design of the restaurant was nice and attractive. However service was a little slow and meals were not served in order meaning hot main courses were received before cold starters/appetizers. Our Waiter mentioned the 3 kitchens in the restaurant however management should consider ways to streamline the timing/delivery of orders.

Terrible food. Awful service. We didn’t finish our food because it was so bad. They try to give everyone $10 Evian waters when you sit down. Beware. It’s Japanese food that tastes like it was made I️n a high school cafeteria with TERRIBLE waitresses and an extremely loud restaurant. It was awful - you’d be better off at a Panda Express. Trust me.

We made this the dinner stop before a concert at Staples. Very convenient, being across the street. They have a nice selection on their menu. My friend and I were running late, due to traffic, and they held our table for us, which was incredibly nice. We arrived and seated. The waiter was friendly with good recommendations and knowledge on the drinks and food. We had the corn crunch, which was amazing, the Katsuya Special roll and the dipping sauce was delicious and we started with the Crispy Rice app, which was such a nice flavor and crunch. That was the perfect amount for the two of us and a wonderful combination of different flavors and textures. The service was speedy, but we didn't feel rushed, but if you need a meal to come quickly to make your event, they definitely fit the need. Great restaurant and will definitely go again.

Second time here. Really enjoy the shrimp rolls as well as the outside vibe at Katsuya. Was disappointed on how bad our waitress was as far as paying attention to us, especially considering we ate there right when they opened, and there were only a few other tables with people. She left us abandoned for the longest before taking our order. Then once the food arrived she didn’t bother to check on us once. One of us needed a fork and the other requested chili powder for the soup. We finally got these items once the food was cold. Also, our waitress disregarded the fact that we had mentioned we were celebrating a birthday. Pretty disappointed.

Was totally looking forward to a first class experience, and that really didn't happen at all! We were seated right away and didn't get service for close to 10 minutes. We enjoyed the time just chatting and visioting, but would have enjoyed it much better with a cold drink in hand.

The portions were very small and really not what I expected from something so fancy and high end. The Edamame was cold and undersalted, which we asked for more salt and never received it. Our waiter was very nice, but very spacey and completely forgot many items we asked him for. I don't care for repeating myself 3 times to a waiter/waitress. It was very busy in the restaurant...but its LA Live I am sure its ALWAYS busy on a Saturday night.

The food was good, but nothing new or fancy or anything I can't get right here at my local sushi shop at the mall! The salmon sushi was pathetically small and I almost sent it back! I could not believe the tiny piece of fish they wanted to give me for this price.

Really wanted to leave a great review and have had a wonderful experience, but we just didn't get it! Which is such a bummer because I picked the place and we only had one night to enjoy all of what LA had to offer. We should have gone somewhere else!

Went with 3 kids and my hubby and food was very good and service was very good. It's a pretty lively place with good people watching. The sashimi was very good and my teriyaki steak was excellent. They had a good sake list and drinks were good. It's a go-to for good sushi...you can never go wrong with Katsuya!

Food was average, not worth it. Waitress got my order wrong, but she was very nice and attentive, especially considering how busy they were. However, this is not a place you can expect great food. Thumbs down on value. Finally, the restroom was inexcusably disgusting like a public restroom. Considering it was 5pm and they were briefly closed, no one bothered to tend to the rest room. Trash everywhere, no soap, absolutely poor management. Not coming back.

Made an RSVP of 8 for my wife’s B-Day Dinner yesterday . The service was really bad. Huge disappointment. Our server literally only came to check on us like 4 times, we had to wave him down for our order instead of him coming to check on us. I expected a lot better service at this high-end sushi place@ LA Live. I’m an LA native, just can’t believe we had that kind of service. I assuming he didn’t care since tip was going to be included in our bill. Keep in mind my bill wasn’t cheap at all. I will definitely not come back here again. They lost my business after last night this place deserves 1 star rating.
