Katie Mullen's Irish Restaurant & Pub - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
It was not crowded the evening we dined there so it was quick service. They have a great beer selection and traditional Irish dishes. There is also a good selection for vegetarians, as the couple we were dining with wanted that option. Very affordable and walkable for other activities downtown. I would definitely go back.
We arranged a dinner here for our Irish Dance school buddies before we went to see Riverdance. It was an easy walk/ bus ride to and from the theater. We made 3 reservations, 2 tables for 8 and one table for 6. We were seated near each other, and could move freely between tables to mingle. The food was delicious, a little pricey, but worth it. They had several menu items marked gluten free, but when I asked why items I would have thought to be gluten free were not, the waiter had no idea, and didn't ask for me. They have gluten free buns, but only one sandwich was marked GF. That makes no sense. I ordered the pork chop, marked GF. $20, but to die for. I passed on the liquor to cover the cost. Stayed within my Weight Watcher points too! The music was not too loud, so I could visit. The waiter was a little slow getting our checks. I don't get downtown much, but I would make this restaurant a priority if I do head that way.
This restaurant is consistently good and has a large variety of items on the menu. I love their
Irish Stew which is something hard to find anywhere else. My friend had the shepherd's pie and said it was great. I also love the beet salad with grilled salmon; it is big but very good.
I would not recommend this restaurant for a party of 6 or more. We had a reservation for a party of 10. Waited 25 minutes to get a menu and glass of water followed by another 20 minutes to take our order, only to see the two other six top tables that came in after we did were getting their appetizers. The excuse was that it was another waiter's table . The asst manager was extremely rude to us and when we complained with suggestion he said "Don't tell me how to run my business"!! Anyway, the GM came after that on his own to apologize for the slowness in the evening and shared with us they just didn't expect the amount of walk in business they got all at one time. He did adjust the bill somewhat by removing the appetizers ordered and again apologized. The crazy thing was that another group in our party was seated in another part of the restaurant that seemed very slow and were in and out in 65'. Just don't think this restaurant has their act together when it comes to organization, well trained wait staff and being efficient. Great food but lousy service. Sorry Katie Mullen's.
We saw an ad through Open Table, advertising Katie Mullen's as a good place to go before/after the theatre. It is a little hike from the DCPA, but the free mall shuttle makes it no problem. we got there for Happy Hour and enjoyed reasonably priced beers, martini, and snacks. The server recommended the mussels, saying they no longer served the scallops on the menu. It would have been helpful if he had informed me that the mussels are not part of the Happy Hour. Other than that, just fine.
Went during happy hour. Beer prices were good, but the food on the happy hour menu is overpriced. We ordered the poached salmon and the fried oysters. Poached salmon is basically like a scoop of tuna salad made with salmon, sitting on a bed of dry (undressed) field greens. Fried oysters were a joke for $5. You get four halves of oysters that are overly-breaded to make up for the tiny oyster meat inside. $5 for that?! For better value just order off the regular menu. We saw another table get the Irish "nachos" and it was a huge platter for $9. We should have just done that.
Excellent restaurant and bar - it's quite large, though laid out in such as way as to feel cozy. There are spaces perfect for larger groups or just a dinner for two. Service is prompt and courteous. The food was amazing - as someone of Celtic heritage, I really appreciated the traditional fare as well as some new takes on old favorites. This would be a great wrap-up to a 16th Street adventure, or the perfect pre-show meal for catching something at the Performing Arts Center. Strongly recommend this restaurant!
Overall a disappointing experience since we had good times previously here. We were not seated until more than 30 minutes after our states reservation time, our food didn't reach our table until an hour after we were seated, and it was lukewarm when it arrived. I understand it was a busy night, but you shouldn't take the reservation if you can't meet the demand.
We got a reservation because we knew it would be a busy night: Friday, during Parade of Lights in Denver. We arrived at 615 and were promptly seated. Our waitress seemed new or flustered. She didn't know the beer offering, which seemed odd for an Irish pub restaurant. The restaurant soon grew quite busy. Our appetizers took 45 minutes to arrive at our table. We had to flag down the server to ask about them, twice.
The pub chips are very good! Dinner arrived 30 minutes later. In all, an hour meal lasted for almost two because the kitchen was very slow. I like Katie Mullens, but will not meet with friends there again. Perhaps lunch would be better when they aren't so busy. They don't seem to be able to handle a crowded weekend night.
Reasonable prices, decent food, pleasant atmosphere, but poor service. Our party of 12 spent over $400 here, and not once did the pretty, blonde waitress refill our water glasses, remove our menu boards, or remove our appetizer plates. We had to go get her to take additional drink orders. Place was under staffed. She was busy with the other tables, but since our gratuity was set, she pretty much ignored us.
Katie Mullens has the look of an Irish pub but lacks the character. The decor is authentic enough, but what makes Irish pubs great is their charm and in that area Katie Mullens is lacking. But what can one expect in downtown Denver.
Having said the above, the food was good and the service was, well serviceable. Even though the pub wasn't crowded, it was busy and you could carry one a conversation without having to raise your voice.
We had a group from the office out to celebrate the upcoming nuptials for one of our team members. The service was excellent, the food and drinks were great and the restaurant had charming ambiance. We were made to feel very welcome and will definitely be coming back.
I hope this was a fluke because I have really enjoyed the food at this restaurant in the past. Our waitress was clueless and uniformed about the menu and the few general questions we had. I was looking forward to ordering a special on sea scallops that they previously offered for a while on Tuesdays. They were plump, cooked perfectly and beautifully presented with vibrant colors of assorted micro-greens, mandarin orange sections, a balsamic reduction drizzle and an artful display of crispy onion strands that topped it off. It was truly impressive, but since it was no longer on the menu, I decided to try the "Angry Scallops" - named appropriately. Bay scallops are small anyway, but these were overcooked in their shell, with a brown and unattractive sauce. The sauce did have good flavor, but what a shame to overcook these tiny little scallops which made them shrivel and shrink to an even smaller size. I hope Katie Mullen's will consider bringing back the big, buttery sea scallops and get rid of the much smaller and angry (for a good reason) bay scallops!
I met some old work friends at Katie Mullen's and we all enjoy the food so it is an easy decision.
I enjoyed the salmon and roasted beet salad. One of the girls had a turkey wrap that she said was great. The other had a salad with poached salmon but she said next time she will get the grilled salmon that has the roasted beets. Lots of good items on their menu. The Irish Stew is wonderful also. The server was friendly and efficient.
Our adult beverage took quite awhile to be delivered to our table, we did have water while waiting! The server probably came by three times to tell us our food order was on its way..............
Although the menu remarked that tartar sauce accompanied the fish, we had to ask for it.
Our server did not share his name.........................
Was looking forward to dinner at Katie Mullens with husband and 2 friends. When we got inside, there was someone banging away on the piano, the volume was on HIGH in every nook of the place. We went out to the patio, weather was nice, so we enjoyed our dinner out there. Server was friendly and efficient, shepherd's pie was good, friend's sweet potato fries looked wilted. Doubt that I'd go back, too many other places to try in that neighborhood.
Pub atmospheres can be quite tricky in terms of finding vegetarian options. I went with a colleague while on a business trip and pleasantly suprised with having some excellent options, though not many main courses. The French onion soup was dynamite, the portobello mushroom and grilled veggie sandwich was delightful, and the mashed carrots and parsnips was tasty. I am also a total salad dressing snob, and Katie Mullens' fabulous blue cheese dressing made me wish I'd ordered more than a side dinner salad. Wish I'd been able to try some of the other side offerings as well, given the quality of those I had, but those four items were actually more than I could eat so ileft well satisfied. (For carnivores out there, my colleague loved her Shepherd's pie.) Service was great. The inside was dark (it is a pub!) but I'm glad we didn sit outside because of so much smoking on the patio area and noise from the 16th street mall. (This seems to be an overall downtown Denver issue.) I would definitely go again.
Food was good - the Reuben was quite tasty, my friends liked their food except for the carrot/parsnip mash. It was so so. The Beer was great (Guinness Golden Lager) and service was attentive. Turns out we didn't need a reservation at 5:00 on a Saturday but glad I had one anyway.
Made a reservation for lunch during March Madness. (Did not need to make a reservation since restaurant was empty.) Even called ahead to be seated near TVs. When we arrived, no one had any idea about our request. We were seated at a very small table at the bar.
Food: Large menu and many affordable options for lunch, but the food was nothing special.
Service: The server was very friendly .
