Karai Crab Ratings and Reviews
We booked the Karai Crab after looking at reviews. We wanted some good local seafood on a Friday night. We grabbed an Uber which was $9 from the outrigger on the beach , it took about 10minutes. When we arrived I thought oh no ( the outside and inside is very plain) then after being seated and ordering we were blown away !! The food is delicious we had prawns, mussels, snow crab, noodles, mushrooms & broccoli. The servings were huge fresh and so tasty- you choose your own sauce, we had garlic butter and Karai crab special mild - we then walked back to the hotel, it took about 30 minutes. Such a good night !!!!
Visiting Ohau for first time and thanks to Open Table “discovered” this gem tucked into a neighborhood off the beaten path. Tiny on the inside but has a hidden outdoor pond /garden with seating apparently partly shared with another restaurant . Dining to the sound of water, live music and quiet conversation was a nice treat enhanced by the fun of fresh seafood. My husband had the sampler with shrimp, mussels, clams, sausage, potatoes and corn. My ciopinno was a spicy mixture of shrimp, mussels, fish, and crab. Messy with peeling the shrimp and digging every morsel of crab out of the shell but had a great time. Plenty of drink options including some very inventive and tasty mixed drinks and the surprise soft serve ( free)dessert. Yumm! Great service too!
Although the waiter said the dungeness crabs were live, the crab we received had meat that was mushy. We've eaten many live dungeness crabs, and this one was either not live or was ultra-overcooked. I suspect the former but can't say for sure. We didn't want to make a scene but $48 for a mushy crab is bordering on criminal.
Service was good though and the self serve mango/vanilla softserve dessert was a fun treat. Those don't however make up for the shortcomings of the food and we don't plan to come back.
What a gem this place is! We were in Honolulu for a few days at the end of our holiday and wanted something a bit more casual than the numerous smart and expensive restaurants available. On arrival it looked a bit like a fast food place (which we were prepared for) but suddenly they took us outside where there was a beautiful water fall and river feature and some amazing seating as their restaurant sister is just next door. Now the food: fresh and plentiful! Fun choosing your fish, then your seasoning and then the level of heat ;-) Beautifully cooked and seasoned! The staff are super friendly and accommodating - one of the few places we felt they actually deserved their recommended 15-20% tip! Miss this place at your peril!!
My favorite restaurant on Oahu for a casual yummy meal! The service and food is outstanding. Definitely have the Karai Special seasoning-so delish! It’s a simple menu that is packed with goodies, and the ending to the meal is always very “sweet”! Good folks making good food!
I wish we had asked to be seated in the 'outdoor' seating. I didn't realize it was so casual and small, but my husband liked the food alot. The service was pleasant, and there was so much food for the money. It would have been nice to have a little more atmosphere, and to not share with the Willows, but we will be back. A very good value and nice, local place.
It was my mom's birthday and I wanted to take somewhere she haven't been and enjoy her seafood because she loves seafood. I've been here for about I think 5-6 times already and Karai Crab didn't disappoint! We ordered 2 batches of king crab in garlic butter sauce, snow crab in lemon pepper sauce, karai combo in karai special sauce, chicken wings, sweet potato fries and bread, and it was all excellent! The shellfish are all on point. The only thing I would have wished they did is to give a piece of cake or pie or ice cream with a candle for the celebrant to wish on and blow, just gives that birthday celebration feel. But other than that, it's awesome, our server is very nice too and did his best to cater to us.
